One Of You Shall Betray Me – Master Is It I?

”Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.” | John 11: 3

When the Lord told His disciples, “One of you shall betray me,” they all replied, “Lord, is it I?”

We should have such distrust of ourselves that we would have the same reply.

But one of His disciples answered differently, “Master (Rabbi) is it I?”

This is the same disciple who betrayed Christ with a kiss saying, “Hail, Master.”

Not one time do we read where Judas Iscariot ever called Christ “Lord.”

Master is a term of respect for a teacher.

But the fact that Judas never called Him Lord reveals what he was in His wicked heart.

To the believer, Christ is Lord.

We recognize His Lordship over all things, and we recognize and love His Lordship over us.

Rolfe Barnard used to say, “Don’t tell me who your savior is, tell me who your Lord is. Then I will know who your savior is.”

Lord I Believe, Help My Unbelief

”And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” | Mark 9: 21-24

Before this man believed, he was not aware of his unbelief.

It was not until he believed that he saw the power of his unbelief.

This is the continued cry of the believer, “Lord, I believe.”

The new man believes.

He cannot not believe and it is the new man that is painfully aware of the unbelief of the old man, “Help thou mine unbelief.” — ‘I cannot do anything about it, and I am asking you to help me!’

The new man always believes and the old man never does.

But there will be no unbelief in heaven because the old man will not be there!

The old man was condemned and put away on the cross, and in heaven the believer will never have to deal with him again.

Strive To Enter In

”Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” | Hebrews 4: 14-16

The Lord said in Matthew 11: 12, “The kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.”

While it is true that salvation is a work of God in which we are passive, men dead in sins do not actively seek the Living God.

It is equally true that when God does give a dead sinner life, that one who was dead in sins becomes very active.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:” (Matthew 7: 13)

He “strives to enter in at the straight gate.”

He earnestly “seeks God with all his heart.”

“I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.” (Luke 11: 8)

He is “importunate” (‘insistent’) in prayer.

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” (Romans 8: 12-13)

He seeks to “crucify the flesh” and “through the Spirit to mortify the deeds of the body.”

“Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” (2 Timothy 2: 10)

He is willing to “endure all things for the elect’s sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus.”

The rest that the believer enters is not one of laziness, apathy, or indifference.

If our belief in sovereign grace has lead us to excuse our sin, justify our disobedience, dampen our enthusiasm, become indifferent to our responsibility, or make our love and zeal grow cold… we have not understood sovereign grace.

While all of our former religious activity does need to be killed, may God deliver us from using His grace to have a passive attitude that is not taught in Scripture!

Thy Faith Hath Saved Thee

”And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.” | Luke 18: 42

We know that strictly speaking, it is not our faith that saved us.

Faith did not keep the law for me. Christ did!

Faith did not die on the cross for my sins. Christ did!

Faith was not raised from the dead, Christ was!

Yet the Lord says, “Thy faith hath saved thee.”

Why does the Saviour put this high honor on our faith? Because faith looks to Christ alone!

It rests in Him only, and looks nowhere else!

It gives all the honor of salvation to Christ!

A faith that does not do that is not saving faith to begin with.

Christ puts such honor on faith because true faith puts all honor on HIM!

Nothing More, Nothing Less, Nothing Else

”God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high” | Hebrews 1: 1-3

When I look to Christ alone, I have assurance.

When I look for faith, or evidence of faith, I have no assurance.

Faith is only in operation as it looks to Christ alone.

If I look to a past experience or a time when I first believed, I am looking to an event rather than Christ alone.

If I am assuring myself that tomorrow I will believe that is nothing more than an act of presumption.

Look to Christ alone now!

Nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else.

The Same Old New Story

”And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him. So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed: Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.” | Acts 28: 8-10

When I look to Christ alone, I have assurance.

When I look for faith, or evidence of faith, I have no assurance.

Faith is only in operation as it looks to Christ alone.

Grace Is Not Offered But Given

”That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.” | Ephesians 1: 10-12

Anytime a preacher presents the grace of God as an offer on God’s part to anybody who is willing to receive it, he has not preached grace as the Bible does.

The Bible does not say, “But God, who is rich in mercy for His great love where with He loved us, even when we were dead in sins has offered us His grace”…it says God hath “quickened us together with Christ, by grace are ye saved.”

Grace is not offered; grace is given!

And when grace is given, it always saves and is always received!

We do not have a choice as to whether or not we will accept God’s offer of grace.

Grace saves!

Grace is not something we use to aid in our salvation – Grace saves us!

All The Counsel Of God

”And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” | Acts 20: 25-28

Paul said to the Ephesian Elders, “I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.” By that he did not mean that every time he preached, he attempted to cover all the various doctrines of the Gospel. He meant that he never held anything back.

In a courtroom, the witness is required “to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” This is necessary because we can tell a lie by means of telling only half the truth! This is an attempt at deception while technically telling the truth. But you know as well as I do that only half the truth is a lie!

How many preachers in our day say many good and true things, yet they only tell half the story?

It is called perjury in our court systems.

In the great court of heaven it is treason!

Preach The Gospel To Every Creature

”Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.” | Matthew 1: 21

When we feel oppressed and overcome by our sin and our sins, what a precious promise.

He shall save.

Notice the certainty of the language. His people are the objects of this great salvation from their sins.

Here is what I need saved from… my sins!

He shall save His people from the punishment of sin.

He shall save His people from the power of sin.

We can now do what we previously could not do when we were under the power of sin. We can now believe, repent, and love because sin no longer has dominion. And one day, blessed thought, we will be saved from the presence of sin. We will commit sin no longer. We will no longer remember what it was to be a sinner.

Then we will understand.

“Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.”
