Weakness, Fear And Much Trembling

”Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.” | Proverbs 16: 12

Paul said to the church at Corinth is his initial visit with them, “I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling”.

”And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2: 1-5)

Upon the surface, do we want someone who speaks as the representative of God to speak with that kind of demeanor?

Would we not prefer someone speaking with the demeanor of strength, courage, and confidence?

Yes, on any other subject, but not when the Gospel is preached!

The only way to preach the Gospel is being deeply conscious of personal weakness, having a fear of misrepresenting God, and a reverential awe that causes inward if not outward trembling!

I would much rather hear a man with weakness, fear, and trembling than a man with self confidence.

There’s no room for self confidence in a thing as awesome as the preaching of the Gospel!

He Hath Visited And Redeemed

”Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” | 1 John 3: 2

My spiritual life began in looking to Christ only.

The way I persevere in the faith is by continuing to look to Christ only.

My desire is that the last breath I take here on earth will be looking to Christ only.

The employment of eternity, albeit without this sinful nature, will be looking to Christ only!

“We shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is”, and will still look to Him only.

My Soul Doth Magnify The Lord

”That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” | Romans 10: 9-10

When it says, “They were all baptized of him in the river Jordan confessing their sins,” that does not mean prior to baptism they made a public confession of the sins they had committed.

It means they confessed they were so sinful they could only be saved by what baptism depicts!

My hope of salvation is that I was in Christ when He lived, died, and was raised from the dead.

I am so sinful I could not be saved any other way.

When men preach and believe that Christ lived for all men without exception, and died and was raised for all men without exception, yet some of those people will be in hell because they did not do their part, they deny the meaning of baptism, make salvation dependent upon human works, and deny the message of the Gospel.

While they are immersed in water, they have no idea of the meaning of baptism: union with Christ.

Justified In Christ

“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” | Luke 18: 13-14

When the Lord pronounced the sinner as going “down to his house justified” that means he went down to his house having never committed a sin.

But by his own admission he was a sinner: “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

How can that be?

Because by the death of Christ, his sins were blotted out and he was given the righteousness and merits of Christ.

If Christ never sinned, neither did he!

Christ gives us a new history!

All of this is true in justification.

On Judgment day, every believer will be justified, as one having never sinned!

As one who kept God’s Holy law perfectly!

As one who loved God will all his heart and his neighbor as himself.

What a glorious Gospel!

The Spirit Of Grace And Supplications

”He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.” | Isaiah 53: 11

I am not satisfied with anything that has my fingerprints on it.

I can only find satisfaction in that which God finds satisfaction in.

“He shall see the travail of His soul and be satisfied.”

God is completely satisfied with the work of His Son.

He is perfectly satisfied with all for whom Christ died!

Christ is satisfied with what He did in their behalf.

That is why He sat down at the right hand of God.

He left nothing undone!

”Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.” (Hebrews 10: 15-17)

The Spirit is satisfied with the work of the Son.

“By one offering He hath perfected forever them that are sanctified, whereof also the Holy Ghost is a witness to us.”

If the Father, Son, and Spirit are completely satisfied with what Christ did, I am too!

The Glorious Death of the Lord Jesus Christ

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” | Romans 8: 35

And what if He did not die?

  • Cain would be condemned, and so would Abel.
  • Esau would be cut off, but so would Jacob.
  • Pharaoh would be damned, but so would Moses.
  • Judas would be cast into the lake of fire, but so would Peter, James, and John.
  • Agrippa would perish, but so would Paul.

The point is, our sole and only reason for being saved is His death.

“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” (Romans 5: 10)

God was completely satisfied by the death of His Son.

His justice was honored, sin was punished, paid for, and put away.

God can ask for nothing more!

And however satisfied He is with the death of His Son is how satisfied He is with those He died for.

Oh how glorious is the death of Christ.

It is the subject of the eternities!

It is the sure and only ground of the salvation of the believer.

Grace Is Not Offered But Given

”But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” |

Anytime a preacher presents the grace of God as an offer on God’s part to anybody who is willing to receive it, he has not preached grace as the Bible does.

The Bible does not say, “But God, who is rich in mercy for His great love where with He loved us, even when we were dead in sins has offered us His grace…”

“It says God hath “quickened us together with Christ, by grace are ye saved.”

”Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” (Ephesians 2: 5)

Grace is not offered; grace is given!

And when grace is given, it always saves and is always received!

We do not have a choice as to whether or not we will accept God’s offer of grace.

Grace saves!

Grace is not something we use to aid in our salvation – Grace saves us!

The Atonement Of Christ

”Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good. Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.” | Psalm 119: 36-40

There are three views of the atonement of Christ.

One is that He died for all men and all men will ultimately be saved.

The next is that He died for all men; some of them will be saved and some will not.

The other is that He died for the elect and all of them will be saved.

The first view cannot be supported from Scripture.

There is a place called hell.

This view denies that.

The second view denies that the blood of Christ is sufficient to save.

He can pay for your sins and you can still be in hell.

It makes salvation depend on human works.

The third view is not a view, but the Truth!

The other two are a denial of the Truth!

There is no Gospel in the first two views.

The third is a declaration of the Truth of the Gospel!

“Who is he that condemneth, it is Christ who died, yea rather, who is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God: who also maketh intercession for us.”

Coming To The King

“God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” | Galatians 6: 14

Every believer says with Paul, ‘God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.’

The reason we glory only in the cross of Christ is we really believe we have nothing to glory in in our flesh.

It is nothing but sin.

The only thing I find any real peace, joy, and comfort and rest in is in what Christ accomplished on the cross.

When He said, ‘It is finished,’ my salvation was signed, sealed, and delivered.

If any aspect of my salvation is dependent upon me, I have no peace.

If it is 100% dependent upon Him… I have peace!

Peace with what conviction we can say, ‘God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world’.

Conviction Of Sin

”And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me;” | John 16: 8-9

Usually, when we think of conviction of sin we think of strong feeling of guilt or remorse over things we have done.

No doubt, feelings of remorse and guilt should come upon us when we have done wrong.

But when the Lord tells us what true conviction of sin is, He says “of sin, because they believe not on Me.”

The sin of sins is to not trust Christ for salvation.

You have experienced Holy Spirit conviction when you see the wickedness of attempting to come into God’s presence any other way than the way of Christ alone.
