Unbelief And Its Consequences

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.” | Romans 1: 20-23

The carnal heart will always give itself the honor, glory, and praise… thinking that it is the source of accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as man’s personal Savior.

It will foolishly comfort itself in self-righteous pride believing that soon heaven shall be its final home.

But a regenerated sinner will say with a broken but thankful heart, “Salvation is of the Lord and therefore I am what I am by the grace of God.”

Vanity Of Vanities

”The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?” | Ecclesiastes 1: 1-3

Believer, if you are looking for comfort, don’t look within yourself.

If you look within, all you will find is doubt, confusion, ignorance and unfaithfulness.

But to the one in need of mercy… the Spirit of God moved upon the prophet Isaiah to declare hope to such who are wretched sinners: ‘Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.’

When Prayer Is An Idol

”He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.” | Proverbs 28: 9

Prayer is the effect of a new heart given to a needy sinner.

It is the expression of thankfulness and petition toward the God of all mercy and grace.

The believer knows that the Lord is absolutely sovereign in creation, providence, and salvation and that the unchanging God, to whom he prays, shall do all His good pleasure.

Therefore the sinner, who sees by faith that there is One who rules and reigns in heaven and earth, continually asks, seeks, and knocks at the Door of mercy Himself and then waits upon Him to do His good pleasure.

Christ The Lamb

“And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” | Genesis 22: 7

When the Gospel is preached, there is one thing that one will always hear… Christ the Lamb.

This is the acid test of a true God centered message.

Without a doubt, there are many things that may be preached which in themselves are good. I don’t know many folks that are not against drugs, immorality, abortions, or any other such thing, but these things are not the issue.

The issue is the glory of Christ — His work, His holiness, and His satisfaction of the law.

When any man stands up to preach, let this test be set upon the words that you hear: “Where’s the Lamb?”

If I don’t hear Him, I haven’t heard the only message that the Holy Ghost will bless to the salvation of a sinner.

The Strait Gate And The Narrow Way

“And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed.” | Genesis 27: 27

There is, without a doubt, no clearer picture or type of the blessing of God Almighty to an unworthy rebel than the blessing of Jacob by his father Isaac.

Jacob had exhibited the true nature of a wretched sinner. In Jacob’s mind, the only way he could get his father’s blessing was to impersonate his brother Esau. Lying with every breath, Jacob attempted to convince his father that he was someone else. Not until Isaac smelled the coat of Esau did he bestow the blessing. The smell of his first born satisfied the aging Isaac.

And just as the smell of Esau’s coat that covered Jacob ushered in the blessing to the younger son… Christ’s royal robe of righteousness, imputed to everyone that believeth in Christ, is the smell of satisfaction, obedience, and truthfulness to God the Father.

In ourselves, we are but “Jacobs,” deceivers, liars and supplanters.

But robed in the glorious robe of Christ’s imputed righteousness… we are accepted and blessed in the Beloved.

Apart from Him, there is no hope, no life, and no blessing from the just and Holy God.

Wait On The Lord

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” | Psalm 27: 14

Waiting on the Lord is an attitude that is completely foreign to the natural man.

That’s why the new man struggles while he truly desires to wait on the One who loves him and gave Himself for him.

He knows that the Lord is working all things after the counsel of His own will and that whatsoever comes to pass has been eternally purposed by the Lord for His glory and the eternal good of His elect and shall not fail to be brought about.

But though these truths are known and loved by the people of God… still they experience the battle within to take matters into their own hands.

O may the Lord help us to wait upon Him.

His Glory, Work, and Honor

“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” | Genesis 1: 3-5

Every sermon sent by God Almighty will always find its focus in the Person of the Lord Jesus.

He is the Alpha and Omega of life.

He is the answer to all eternal questions and the purpose of all things.

Comfort in all trials is found by hearing the message of Christ which proclaims His glory, work, and honor.

We will never be found to honor Him more than to hear and believe His Gospel which, beginning with Moses and throughout all the prophets and in all the scriptures, declare those things that are concerning Him.

Unless Christ

”And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.” | Acts 16: 23-25

Unless the Spirit of God crosses my path and gives me an understanding of the preciousness of Christ and the glory of His blessed Gospel and creates within me a new heart, giving me a knowledge of Who He is, I will be forever lost.

Unless Christ intervenes, He will never be any more to me than someone else recorded in history who walked this earth.

When the gospel is preached it will be nothing more to me than a boring hour of the same message heard last week; the songs of praise will be to me nothing more than a different way of singing eighth notes; and when I hear those who call themselves believers witness of Him, their conversation will only grate on the already frayed ends of my nerves.

But if my cold heart is removed and God Himself creates within me a new heart, I will find myself in awe of His mercy.

I will not be able to thank Him enough, to praise Him enough, to worship Him enough, or to hear His gospel enough.

As Rolfe Barnard said, “I’ll find myself somewhere between total ecstasy and despair.”

Still, even with that new heart, sometimes I will seemingly feel so indifferent to Christ’s message.

But I will not despair at my feelings — He is greater than my feelings!

I must not rest in my feelings.

I must rest in Him, in His Word, in His promises.

Rest In Christ

”After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” | John 19: 28-30

“It Is Finished”

Every time I consider this passage, my mind focuses first on the word “IT.”

All that God required concerning the redemption of God’s sheep… all that the law demanded for justice and judgment against His people… every type and shadow of Christ in the Old Testament is included in “IT.”

And though this frail creature fails to grasp the fullness of “IT”, all was completed!

Everything God eternally willed, purposed, decreed, and ordained was FINISHED by Christ’s one sacrifice for sin. And the marvel of this blessed truth is summed up with the word “IS.”

That which He has done, He has done forever!

What a declaration of peace for a needy sinner from the mouth of the glorious Lamb of God.
