We Preach Christ

“For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;” | 1 Corinthians 1: 22-23

Times have changed but men have not.

Most religionists still seek signs, tongues, feelings, and experiences like the religious Jews.

The other camp of religionists still seek wisdom, intellectualism, and philosophy like the worldly wisdom of the Greeks.

But God’s preachers PREACH CHRIST.

They know Christ, love Christ, and desire that others know and love Him too.

“For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2: 2)

Such a vast, infinite, and heavenly gospel can never be exhausted; so, we preach Christ today and tomorrow, as our first and last message, and as the full sum of our theology.

This Man Receiveth Sinners

”And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.” | Luke 15: 2

“This Man receiveth sinners” – I love those four words.

What hope!

What joy for a soul who is drowning in his or her own sin, with no possible way of pulling himself or herself out.

“This Man” – the God-Man, the Almighty who manifested Himself in the flesh, the All Powerful One, the Sovereign who is able to do what He pleases with whom He pleases, the One who is able to save to the uttermost.

“Receiveth” – In His graciousness and His mercy, He receives, and receives, and receives, promising to never cast out.

“Sinners” – No matter how wretched. No matter how weak.

No matter how insufficient and unworthy – Christ shed His blood to put away ALL of the sin of His people.

And in His blood, the glorious message of hope goes out to every soul who is truly in need: “This Man receiveth sinners!”

If you are labored and heavy laden over your sin, come to Him.

He will give you rest.

We Preach Christ Jesus the Lord

”For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.” | 2 Corinthians 4: 5

The apostle describes in this verse the ministry of every true preacher; we preach Christ, not ourselves!

We point you to Christ and not to us, our wisdom, or our organization.

With that in mind, when can it be said of us that we are preaching ourselves and not Christ?

1.) When we preach what we think instead of preaching what God says.

2.) When we preach what men want to hear instead of what men ought to hear.

3.) When we seek to please men by taking the offense out of the cross and glory in the flesh.

4.) When we set ourselves up as spiritual authorities over the consciences of our hearers, judging their salvation by their relationship with us and our requirements.

5.) When we try to impress men with our wisdom, knowledge, or piety.

6.) When we become ambitious for personal recognition and begin to boast of numbers and converts and attach our names to buildings, organizations, monuments, and movements.

7.) When we fear public opinion and court the friendship and approval of carnal men at the expense of truth.

8.) When we allow our hearers to entertain any hope of salvation except by the sovereign grace of God through the merits of Jesus Christ.

9.) When we preach for any other reason than the glory of Jesus Christ and the eternal good of our hearers.

We preach Christ, not ourselves!

In Christ Jesus

”But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” |

Who can express fully the blessings of these words: “In Christ?”

To be “in Christ” means to be chosen “in Him before the foundation of the world.”

To be “in Christ” means that there is now “no condemnation,” accepted “in the Beloved,” and “complete in Him.”

It means that “as He is, so are we in this world.” “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Romans 8: 1)

“To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” (Ephesians 1: 6)

“And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power” (Colossians 2: 10)

“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.” (1 John 4: 17)

It means everything to be “in Christ.”

It Pleased The Lord Through Preaching

”Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.” | Acts 13: 1-3

In this text, we have the account of how the Lord faithfully sent forth Barnabas and Saul to the Gentile world.

God has an elect people whom he has determined to save OUT OF all corners and people of this world in Christ Jesus.

This was the Lord’s word to Abraham: “In blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed” (Christ the Seed) ‘shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.” (Genesis 22: 17-18)

The gospel of Christ the Seed was preached to Abraham: “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.” (Galatians 3: 16)

“And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.” (Galatians 3: 8, 9)

This same gospel shall be preached to all God’s elect scattered throughout the entire world.

God uses his church to do so.

The very wisdom of God which chose his people in Christ, the very wisdom which accomplished the work whereby mercy and peace have met in harmony in Christ our Substitute, is the same wisdom of God which chose that the instrument he would use to proclaim his gospel would be his church in this world. The believer — who is perfectly complete in Christ to enter glory right now – remains in this world because God choose to use saved sinners to carry his gospel to his elect and save them through the gospel of our glorified Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

“For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” (1 Corinthians 1: 21)

Just as the work of election, of redemption, and of regeneration is the work of our triune God even so the work of raising up and equipping his vessels of mercy is the work of our Lord. God’s ambassadors’ are called of God; God gives his saints a heart to recognize his messengers and to support them in God’s work; God separates them to the work he would have them to do; God’s messengers are filled and led by the Spirit of God.

Thus they go forth preaching the gospel of Christ and him crucified.

Let Us Not Be Discouraged!

”God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” | Psalm 46: 1-5

We preach the gospel of God’s sovereign, free grace in Christ Jesus the Lord; that salvation is in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, according to the word alone.

For the most part, the message is rejected, but do not be discouraged, it has ever been so!

Elijah thought he was the only one left who believed God; Isaiah wrote, “Who hath believed our report and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?”

When the Lord Himself preached in His hometown of Nazareth, the people marveled at His gracious words when He spoke of the blessings, but when He spoke of sovereign mercy, they tried to kill Him!

The Apostle Paul was accused of being a pestilent fellow, a mover of sedition, the ringleader of a sect and was imprisoned for preaching the gospel. But remember, it is written; “the word of God is not bound,” “my word shall not fail” and “this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”

Preach The Gospel To Every Creature

”Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.” | Matthew 1: 21

When we feel oppressed and overcome by our sin and our sins, what a precious promise.

He shall save.

Notice the certainty of the language. His people are the objects of this great salvation from their sins.

Here is what I need saved from… my sins!

He shall save His people from the punishment of sin.

He shall save His people from the power of sin.

We can now do what we previously could not do when we were under the power of sin. We can now believe, repent, and love because sin no longer has dominion. And one day, blessed thought, we will be saved from the presence of sin. We will commit sin no longer. We will no longer remember what it was to be a sinner.

Then we will understand.

“Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.”

Abide In Me

”We preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.” | 2 Corinthians 4: 5

Our Lord said to His disciples, “Abide in me, and I in you, as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself.” (John 15: 4)

It is true that a person who is saved by God’s grace will remain saved forever; yet the scriptures are full of warnings to believers against UNBELIEF, against DRAWING BACK, against NEGLECTING THE WORD AND WORSHIP, against WORLD-LINESS, and against LEAVING OUR FIRST LOVE!

Here the Lord Jesus exhorts us to “ABIDE” in Him, which means to stay where we are. Abide (dwell) in His love, in His word, in His Spirit and fellowship. “As we have received Christ, so walk (live, abide, stay) in Him.”

Let us forever be on guard against any influence (whether material, social, or personal) which might hinder our fellowship and relationship with the Lord.

I think of poor Esau, who satisfied his appetite but lost his blessing. Are we so foolish?

Yes, we are! And we need to be constantly reminded of it.

STAY where you are!

Dwell in Christ and in His word, in His love and with his people. Don’t let anyone nor anything come between you and Him.

If you notice even the slightest decline in interest, desire, or thirst for spiritual growth, go with Jacob “BACK TO BETHEL.” (Genesis 35: 1-2)
