The Glory In Trials

”Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” | Romans 5: 1-5

Faith believes God’s promise to perform all that is necessary to justify us and make us the righteousness of God.

That is what Abraham believed.

How does it say Abraham gave glory to God?

He staggered not at God’s promise through unbelief.

But was fully persuaded — that is what faith is – being fully persuaded.

Fully persuaded that what?

That what God promises, God is able also to perform.

God promised Abraham righteousness by the work Christ Jesus the Son of God would perform on Abraham’s behalf – and Abraham believed God’s promise, fully persuaded he was able to perform it.

Through faith, God imputed — charged or laid to his account – the very righteousness God requires.

”Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” (1 Peter 1:3)

When you do not believe that God is able to perform all the work necessary to justify you and bring you to himself, without you helping him, then you are in a constant warfare against God.

God is your enemy.

You fight to deny the very being and perfections of God.

You fight to deny that justification is accomplished by Christ.

Faith believes that my peace with God is by Christ.

Faith also believes that it is by Christ that I continue in the perpetual care of God’s unchanging favor – His grace.

This word stand, means, that true God-given faith shall endure because God’s grace in Christ Jesus continually makes us to stand.

”As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.” (Psalm 17: 15)

We can rather glory in tribulations, in our infirmities, in suffering, for when I am weakest that is when I behold the more that I shall be saved by his life.

In Time Of Trouble

“For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart. Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me.” | Psalm 36: 9-11

In 1895, the pastor and writer, Andrew Murray, was in England suffering from a terribly painful back, the result of an injury he had incurred years before.

One morning while he was eating breakfast in his room, his hostess told him of a woman downstairs who was in great trouble and wanted to know if he had any advice for her.

Murray handed her a paper he had been writing on and said, “Just give her this advice I’m writing down for myself. It may be that she’ll find it helpful.”

This is what he had written:

“In time of trouble, say,

‘First, He brought me here. It is by His will I am in this strait place; in that I will rest.’

‘Next, ‘He will keep me here in His love, and give me grace in this trial to behave as His child.’

‘Then say, ‘He will make the trial a blessing, teaching me lessons He intends me to learn, and working in me the grace He means to bestow.’

‘And last, say, ‘In His good time He can bring me out again. How and when, He knows.’

‘Therefore, say ‘I am here (1) by God’s appointment, (2) in His keeping, (3) under His training, (4) for His time.”

How Long Till The End?

“And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.” | Daniel 12:3

Jesus wept at Lazarus’ tomb, not because He was weak, unbelieving, or discontent with divine providence, but because He
was and is a real man touched with the feeling of our infirmities, moved by that which moves us.

He wept with His weeping friends because He felt and shared their grief and sorrow.

Fundamentals Of Grace

”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” | John 1: 1-2

Four things comfort the child of God in trials and afflictions:

  1. ”That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.” (1 Thessalonians 3: 3)

We can trust the God who appoints them.

  1. ”For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” (Psalm 103: 14)

We can trust that He knows our frame.

  1. ”And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8: 28)

We can trust that good will always be waiting at the end of the trial.

  1. ”To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.” (1 Thessalonians 3: 13)

We can trust that one day soon He will “…stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.”

Absolute Control, Absolute Comfort

”Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.” | 2 Corinthians 1: 3-5

God does not comfort us in our sorrow to make us feel comfortable, but “…that we may be able to comfort them which are in trouble, by the same comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” (2 Corinthians 1: 4)

Breadth, Length, Depth, Height

”Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” | Ephesians 3: 13-19

Even in the least difficult situations, God must give us His grace.

Even in the most difficult situations, God’s people find that His grace is sufficient.

He Pulled Us Out!

“I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” | Psalm 40: 1-3

I received a note the other day from a person who is going through a very difficult time.

This could be the greatest trial of this person’s life.

But in the note, this person was acknowledging all of the goodness and mercy that the Lord has shown to His people. And in spite of all the sad news, the note ended with this word of great thankfulness to our savior: “He pulled us out!”

That’s exactly what Christ did for his people!

He reached way down for us, and lifted us out of the deep miry clay!

We were sold into the slavery pit of sin, but God in sovereign love sent His own Son to rescue us!

And when He on the cross of Calvary cried: “It Is Finished!” God the father cried: “Deliver them!… I have found a Ransom”

In spite of the deep sorrow and tribulation that we must endure in this world because of sin; for the rest of time and eternity, the redeemed of the Lord will never get over the glory of the Gospel; “He pulled us out!”

We Glory In Tribulations Also

”We glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” | Romans 5: 3-5

Why would a believer glory in tribulations which cause us so much sorrow?

In the trial God sweetly forces us to trust Christ to save us and by doing so God makes us a little more patient to wait on Christ in the next trial.

Through patience, God proves to us more clearly that we have no strength and the grace of God is truly sufficient.

This is the perfect work James speaks of when he says let patience have her perfect work.

God sheds his love in our hearts by the Spirit and grows us in hope so that in the next trial we are a little less prone to put our hand to things below but instead “flee for refuge to lay hold upon the Hope set before us.”

This is why we thank God for the school of trial and affliction.

John Bunyan expressed this glorying when writing of his 12 years in prison, “I never had, in all my life, so great an insight into the Word of God as now; insomuch that I have often said, Were it lawful, I could pray for greater trouble, for the greater comforts’ sake.”

The Trial Of Our Faith

“And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.” | Genesis 12: 10-13

Every sermon sent by God Almighty will always find its focus in the Person of the Lord Jesus.

He is the Alpha and Omega of life.

He is the answer to all eternal questions and the purpose of all things.

Comfort in all trials is found by hearing the message of Christ which proclaims His glory, work, and honor.

We will never be found to honor Him more than to hear and believe His Gospel which, beginning with Moses and throughout all the prophets and in all the scriptures, declare those things that are concerning Him.
