The Strait Gate And Narrow Way

“And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed.” | Genesis 27: 27

There is, without a doubt, no clearer picture or type of the blessing of God Almighty to an unworthy rebel than the blessing of Jacob by his father Isaac.

Jacob had exhibited the true nature of a wretched sinner.

In Jacob’s mind, the only way he could get his father’s blessing was to impersonate his brother Esau.

Lying with every breath, Jacob attempted to convince his father that he was someone else.

Not until Isaac smelled the coat of Esau did he bestow the blessing.

The smell of his first born satisfied the aging Isaac.

And just as the smell of Esau’s coat that covered Jacob ushered in the blessing to the younger son… Christ’s royal robe of righteousness, imputed to everyone that believeth in Christ, is the smell of satisfaction, obedience, and truthfulness to God the Father.

In ourselves, we are but “Jacobs,” deceivers, liars and supplanters.

But robed in the glorious robe of Christ’s imputed righteousness… we are accepted and blessed in the Beloved… Apart from Him, there is no hope, no life, and no blessing from the just and Holy God.

This Man Recieveth Sinners, And Eateth With Them

“Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them” | Luke 15: 1-2

While the self-righteous Pharisees and scribes withdrew from the Lord Jesus Christ and then harshly criticized Him, many publicans and sinners drew near to hear Him.

“Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.” (Acts 10: 33)

“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6: 44)

What a blessing from the Lord to have a willingness to draw near to Him and then to have ears to actually hear a word from Him.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” (John 5: 24)

His words are words of life.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1: 16)

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4: 12)

His words are words of salvation.

The worst thing the Pharisees and scribes said of the Lord, This man recieveth sinners, and eateth with them;” is the best thing any sinner could hear.

“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” (Romans 10: 1-4)

It is not sin that keeps a man from hearing the good news of the gospel of Christ, it is his presumed righteousness he is going about to establish by his religious deeds.

“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3: 19-20)

“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;” (Ephesians 2: 1)

No man will ever come to Christ while he is resting in the deeds of the law for salvation.

“For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.” (John 5: 21)

“Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.” (1 John 5: 1)

It is only by the almighty power of His sovereign grace that will effectually quicken us and make us alive in Christ that will cause us to draw near to Him, to hear Him and to believe Him.

“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,” (2 Timothy 1: 9)

This Man receives sinners! What a miracle of amazing and sovereign grace.

The True God, True Elect, True Redeemer

“And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.” | 2 Kings 11: 19

We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.

That portion cut me to the heart, while at the same time it has been my hope.

If I am to stand by myself to give an account, I am lost forever; but it is the judgment seat of Christ.

He is my surety and has paid all demands.

I shall be tried there by a covenant of grace, not a covenant of works.

Blessed be God for His great Salvation.

I bless God that the promises of the gospel met me in all my wants, wounds, and wretchedness.

I wish to die with “God be merciful to me a sinner” upon my lips.

Standing Up Under Trials

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” | James 1: 2-4

No trial or suffering is easy.

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” (1 John 3: 1-3)

If trials were without pain and discomfort, they would not accomplish the purpose for which they are sent.

But, when we look at all of earth’s sorrows, sufferings, and trials in the light of His eternal glory; when we shall be like Him, enjoy His presence, and partake in His perfect kingdom, then we will look on these present inconveniences as nothing.

They are not worthy to be compared to that glory.

Entering In To True Rest

”For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.” | Hebrews 4: 2-3

Now then, there is but one thing with which Almighty God is satisfied – entirely satisfied – and that is THE PERSON AND WORK OF HIS SON!

It is with Christ that we must be satisfied, not with ourselves, nor anything about us!

When we cease from ALL our labors, and ALL our righteousness, and ENTER INTO HIS REST, pardon and peace will come without delay.

Heaven’s Greatest Attraction

”For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:” | Philippians 1: 23

The great attraction of heaven is the Lord Jesus Christ!

He Himself is the object chiefly enjoyed.

To be with Jesus, and like Jesus, and to behold His glory constitute the heaven which true believers desire!

They long to behold that blessed face which was buffeted for them!

Their eternal anthem is, “Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever.” Amen.

He Saved Us

”Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” | Titus 3: 5

This is a three word summary of the gospel we preach: He saved us.

He: God. God did all of the saving. God the Father elected a people unto salvation. God the Son redeemed those people by the blood of His sacrifice for them. God the Holy Spirit calls those people to Christ and gives them life and faith to come. God keeps and preserves those people and brings them to glory by the power of His grace and love for them.

Saved. God saved His elect from all of their sin. He redeemed His people by paying their sin debt with His precious blood. Christ saved His people from the curse of the law by being made a curse for them and dying the death that they deserve. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:” (Galatians 3: 13)

Us. Christ didn’t come to try to save as many people as might would decide to accept Him.

Christ came to save a specific people: the people the Father gave Him to save “I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.” (John 17: 9)

Christ came to save those people who belong to Him because the Father gave them to Him “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1: 21)

Christ came to save His sheep and only His sheep “As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 10: 15)

All of the “us” who are chosen, called, and believe on Christ are fully and eternally saved because He saved us.

That Door Is Closed

”He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.” | Psalm 103: 10-13

If I had died as a child, I would be assured of a place in glory; but, that door is closed.

I am an adult. If I had been holy in birth and perfect in life, I would reign with Christ; but, I was born in sin and even my righteousnesses are filthy rags, so that door is closed.

What shall I do?

Is there no door open to such as I?

Yes, there is ONE!

Christ said, “I am the door, by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10: 9)

Am I such a fool that I will turn from that one, God-given door, and perish?

God forbid!

The Only Way

”Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.” | Matthew 22: 42

How can a sinner approach God?

How can a son of Adam come before God, be accepted and be forgiven?

Only in the way which God has decreed – NO OTHER WAY!

This is not being too narrow nor radical, for the Scriptures declare this truth over and over. “There is none other name…”; “Other foundation can no man lay…”; “No man cometh to the Father but by me.”; “He that believeth not shall be damned.” (John 14: 6; Acts 4: 12; 1 Corinthians 3: 11)

Instead of insisting on another way, let us rejoice in His underserved mercy which provided THE WAY!

God has, in grace and mercy, purposed to show mercy to sinners in the only way consistent with His justice, truth, and love – the obedience and sacrifice of His only begotten Son. (Romans 3: 19-26)

Contenders Or Pretenders?

”Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” | Jude 1: 3

Those who are not earnestly contending “for the faith” (the gospel of God’s sovereign and free grace in Christ) are only mere pretenders in a false refuge of lies. (Isaiah 28: 15; Matthew 7: 21-23)

Those who are earnestly and eagerly contending “for the faith” are those that are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. (Romans 1: 16-17)

Those who fervently contend “for the faith” are those who publicly preach it, (Acts 5: 42; Philippians 1: 27) faithfully support it, (Corinithians 9: 7) zealously identify themselves where the gospel is preached, (Hebrews 10: 25) ardently pray for God’s blessing upon it, (2 Thessalonians 3: 1) dogmatically defend it against all opposition, (Galatians 5: 1-5; Philippians 1: 17; 1 Timothy 6: 3-5) and assertively insist that there is but one gospel. (Galatians 1: 6-10; Ephesians 4: 4-6)

Now the question for us is this, are we genuine and legitimate contenders or wretched and desolate pretenders?
