Did Christ Die For Everybody?

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” | 2 Corinthians 5: 17

There is a chorus that we love to sing which says: “Did you hear what the Lord Jesus said to me? They’re all taken away, away! Thy sins are pardoned, and you are free. They’re all taken away!”

With that good news declaration being proclaimed to sinners in the word of God, the apostle Paul said: “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3: 13,14)

As we leave one year and enter into a new year, may this thought bring great joy to our hearts: In the Lord Jesus Christ our old, dark past has been dealt with and put away. It is over! And the only thing that awaits us ahead is the new light of a sinless eternity with Christ!

He is our “mark”; let’s press toward Him!

“I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

“And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.” | Job 1: 19

There are many ways in which my own experience of God’s grace and his good providence compel me to adopt the language used by Job’s messenger as my own.

Looking back to the day of my birth, had not the Lord God preserved me from my mother’s womb, I would have surely perished. Many did in those days. But he who formed me in the belly loved me. Before I came forth from my mother’s womb, he sanctified me and ordained me as his messenger to you. (Jeremiah 1: 5) — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

My childhood, like yours, was filled with perils and dangers, in which multitudes dropped all around me. Many with whom I attended school are in hell today, others are in prison; and I would certainly have been in one or the other, had it not been for the fact that God spared me. He preserved me by his boundless, free grace and distinguishing mercy. — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

When, as a youth I lived at the edge of hell, playing with death, with my fists clinched, shaking them in my ever-gracious God’s face, courting his wrath every day, flirting with hell every night, the only reason I did not perish in the way I chose is the fact that I was “preserved for Jesus Christ” from eternity. (Jude 1) Nothing else can satisfactorily explain why my actions did not result in my death. — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

Oh the wonders of God’s distinguishing love toward me as the highly favored object of his mercy, by which he hedged me about and kept me, (Hosea 1: 6) when I had no awareness of his love for me, when I was utterly unconscious of the fact that he was watching over me and performing all things for me, (Psalm 57: 2) preserving me unto the day that he would call me by his grace! Hawker asked with astonishment, “Who shall count the sum of distinguishing mercy, in preserving and upholding providences, during the whole of an unconverted state?”“And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

Then, after he called me by his grace, giving me life and faith, salvation and forgiveness in Christ, how magnificently he has continued to uphold and preserve me from all evil, sparing my life in the midst of one sickness and then another! Why has he spared me? Why do I still reside in this tabernacle? I am convinced that there is no other reason but this: — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

All around me I see multitudes dying and dead in trespasses and sins, unawakened, unconcerned, unregenerated. I understand, (O Spirit of God remind me constantly!) that I have been spared, that I live to “declare the works of the Lord.” (Psalm 118: 17) — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

God give me grace to proclaim with earnestness the glorious gospel of his dear Son. To tell all who can be reached by my voice, and pen, and influence of the wonders of redeeming love. — “Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.” (Psalms 66: 16) — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

The Trial Of Our Faith

“And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.” | Genesis 12: 10-13

Every sermon sent by God Almighty will always find its focus in the Person of the Lord Jesus.

He is the Alpha and Omega of life.

He is the answer to all eternal questions and the purpose of all things.

Comfort in all trials is found by hearing the message of Christ which proclaims His glory, work, and honor.

We will never be found to honor Him more than to hear and believe His Gospel which, beginning with Moses and throughout all the prophets and in all the scriptures, declare those things that are concerning Him.

Our Steps Are Ordered Of The Lord

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” | Philipians 1: 6

What will happen in the days to come?

Everything the Lord has wisely decreed in His eternal purpose for us to experience. (Romans 11: 36; Ephesians 1: 11) The Lord gave David these words in Psalm 37: 23; “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”

Our Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples in their day; “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16: 33)

The apostle Paul declares that every believer has won the victory of salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ forever; “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15: 57) We can be assured by the word of our blessed God and Saviour; that every promise of God will be fulfilled; (Joshua 23: 14; 2 Peter 1: 3-4) that our gracious Lord will provide for our every need; (Philipians 4: 19) that He will never leave us or forsake us. (Hebrews 13: 5-6)

As the old writers used to express it; “The Lord will give us all grace now and glory forever. We don’t know what the future holds but we know who holds the future.” (Psalm 31: 15)

Seek The Kingdom of God First

“Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!” | Isaiah 52: 6,7

How great is our God whose hand paints every flower and shapes every leaf; who forms every bud on every tree and every infant in the womb; who feeds each crawling worm with a parent’s care and every insect that sleeps in the bosom of a flower; who opens the golden gates of day and draws the dusky curtains of the night; who measures every drop of rain, the whirling flakes of snow and the sands of man’s earthly life; who determines alike the fall of the sparrow and the fate of a kingdom; who so overrules the tide of human fortune that, whatever befalls a man, come joy or sorrow, the believer readily declares, “It is the Lord: let Him do what seemeth Him good.”

A Fallen Saint

“Peter went out and wept bitterly.” | Luke 22: 62

Peter had sat in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

He had walked on the water to go to Him. He had lived in the full assurance that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God. “We believe and are sure,” he said, “That thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God,” the words of blood redemption had gone to Peter’s heart from the very lips of Jesus Christ Himself. (John 6: 68) Peter had seen the power of the Lord when he spoke to the raging waves of the sea and stilled them – the Lord Jesus saved Peter’s life that day, and Peter knew it too.

Now this same Peter has denied the Lord he loved and believed – even cursed and swore he never knew him. Look at him now as he goes off in the darkness sobbing as he goes. Imagine the guilt and fear that weighed upon his afflicted conscience? Imagine the suggestions from Satan, the prince of darkness, saying to him, “There is no hope for you now.” Only those who have experienced such a thing know how Satan can work with a guilty conscience to drive it to despair.

I am sure Peter thought, as many have since, “There is no way out of this dilemma I find myself in.” A poor soul like this can despair of ever being recovered. He sank in deep mire where there was no standing. I will tell you this, if Jesus Christ does not make intercession for such a person and strengthen his faith, and send some light into his darkness, Satan will sift him. Those who dream they are a match for Satan’s accusations are ignorant of his devices.

Does our Lord Jesus know all this? Of course he knows. His intercession had already secured Peter, not from falling but from falling away. Not from bitter weeping but from final despair. Peter had a sad and fearful fall, but he had a fearless and faithful Advocate with the Father. Peter fell, but just about the time the enemy began to rejoice over him, he rose up again – forgiven and restored.

Dear fallen saint, don’t despair. Maybe you see no way in your present darkness to be restored, but Jesus Christ can see for you, He is the way. Look out of your wet eyes to him. Your heart is aching but the Lord Jesus feels it. Trust him. Wait upon Him. Your weeping may endure for a night, but joy will come in the morning.

Power To Cross Our Path

And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.” | Acts 8: 26

In absolute power God moves his messenger and his vessel of mercy so that they meet right where God would have them meet.

There were two roads which Philip could have taken. Yet, through the Spirit the Lord commanded Philip to go south on the road which went down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This was the desert road. The phrase “go toward the south” has an alternate meaning in the Greek which means “at midday.” So in power the Holy Spirit of God, literally, moved his messenger to take the road least traveled, at the time of day when it was least likely to be traveled, to meet the most unlikely person, an Ethiopian eunuch.

The Lord’s elect may be wandering lost in the most remote places on this globe but the Lord who saves in power knows exactly where they are. We may have to be led away from the religion of the day out onto old Gaza Road, as was the Ethiopian eunuch, but God is able.

God our Savior, the King of heaven and earth, shall bring the good news of his Son to each of his children in his time in his power.

In Everything Give Thanks

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” | 1 Thessalonians 5: 18

Lord, teach us what the word “everything” means.

It would be very easy for us, in our sinful and doubtful flesh, to insert the words “some things” into that verse. In some things, we do give thanks. In most things, however, we don’t. Usually, we murmur over things, we complain over things, we question things, and we try our hardest to change things.

We do this because our sinfully blind eyes do not see the hand of the Lord in it. We do this because, sinfully, we are not trusting that He is doing right in it. We do this because, sinfully, we are doubtful that good will come from it.

Lord, we believe, help our unbelief! Teach us to have a single eye on You, and Your perfect purpose, and Your all knowing, all controlling, sovereign will. Teach us that everything is being done by You, through You, to You.

Therefore, EVERYTHING is for Your glory and our good. If we could truly see that… in everything, we would give thanks!

The Purpose Of God

“For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.” | Romans 9: 17

We believe, according to the scriptures, that the Lord our God is a God of purpose, absolute and unalterable purpose.

Before the world began, Almighty God sovereignly purposed all that ever comes to pass in time.

Nothing in this world is left to chance.

Everything is moving toward the predetermined end of God’s eternal purpose with absolute, precise accuracy. Even a casual reader of Holy Scripture has to face this fact: The God of the Bible is a God of purpose.

Read:
Romans 8: 28-30
Romans 9: 11-26
Romans 11: 33-36
Ephesians 1: 3-14
Ephesians 3: 11
2 Timothy 1: 9

These passages plainly state that the Triune Jehovah is a God of purpose, and clearly teach several things about the purpose of God:

The purpose of God is eternal.

The purpose of God includes all things.

The purpose of God has for its peculiar design the everlasting benefit of God’s elect. Everything that God has purposed is for the ultimate, spiritual, and eternal benefit of his covenant people.

The purpose of God is immutable and sure. The Lord himself says, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isaiah 46: 10)

And in its ultimate end, God’s purpose will accomplish the eternal salvation of his chosen people and the glory of his own great name.

Election is Sovereign – “The Purpose of God”

“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.” | Romans 8: 29-30

The Bible reveals God to be sovereign in creation, providence, and salvation.

When men object to God’s sovereignty exercised in election, we do well to point them to the apostle’s words in Romans 9: 20-21, “Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to Him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?”

Men have been told for so long that God is in their hands, it is no wonder that many are astonished to hear that the Bible says it is just the opposite.
