Grace Be With You. Amen.

“The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.” | 2 Timothy 4: 22

If our hope lies in us, or in what we do, it is a delusion.

“Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees. But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled. Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?” (Job 4: 4-6)

If our hope lies in this church it is a lie.

“The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.” (Psalm 147: 11)

If our hope stands with one foot on the work of Christ and the other foot on our own merits, it will fail us.

“Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.” (Psalm 33: 20-22)

Hope in Christ is the only hope which can be acceptable to God.

“I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.” (Psalm 16: 7-9)

Our only hope of Heaven will be through Christ alone.

Here our hope begins, and here our hope ends.

The Word

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” | John 1: 1-3

Look at this name and title John gives to the Lord Jesus again — “The Word”.

“In the beginning was the Word.”

That is a statement so full of meaning that I have no hope of expounding it.

Christ is called the Word because he is the Wisdom of God.

He is called the Word because he is the Person spoken of in all the Old Testament prophecies and the sum of all the promises.

Our Redeemer is called the Word because he is the Speaker, the Revealer and the Interpreter of the Father’s will.

And he is called the Word because he is the Image of the invisible God, the Offspring of the Father’s mind, the Express Image of his Person, just as our words (if honestly spoken) are the express image of our minds.

The Remedy For The Fear of Man

”The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.” | 2 Samuel 23: 3-4

The fear of God… drives away the fear of man , which brings a snare.

Christ says, “Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear Him, which, after He hath killed, hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear Him” (Luke 12: 4-5)

Christ Himself proposes the fear of God as the great remedy for the fear of man.

Nor is there any other that is found adequate.

But this is enough.

How justly does God rebuke that fear of man: “Who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; and forgettest the Lord thy Maker, that stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor?” (Isaiah 51: 12-13)

It is not possible for us to fear God too much or man too little.

So surely as we have just conceptions of the eternal power and majesty of God, we shall have no tormenting fear of the puny arm of mortals.

Wisdom In Death

”LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.” | Psalm 39: 4

When we, by God’s grace, are wise enough to face death, judgement, and eternity, things are seen in their proper light.

“Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.” (Psalm 39: 5)

All these fine ideas of fame, fortune, and friends, and our so-called importance melts like frost in the sun.

“Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.” (Psalm 39: 6)

Death reveals the truth, blows away the chaff, shuts a man’s mouth, and opens the books!

“Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish. I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.” (Psalm 39: 8-9)

Death takes no notice of what I thought nor what others thought of me, but only of what God thinks.

“Oh, that I may win Christ and be found in him.”

The Fear Of The LORD

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” | Psalm 111: 10

Once Job and his three friends had spoken, they were rebuked by Elihu and then by God, Himself.

The essence of Elihu’s and God’s response to all that had been said by Job and his three friends is this: God is the Maker and Sovereign Sustainer of all things.

Powers beyond your imagination are at His beck and call.

Who are you?

There is no fault in man that cannot be traced back to his lack of reverence or “the fear of the Lord.”

Paul concluded his prosecution of all mankind with, “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

In some, this lack of the fear of God results in outright atheism; in others, it results in a form of religion in which the works and/or will of men are the deciding factor in their eternal condition.

Some would say that the pride of man is the source of all sin and error, and they would be correct in saying that.

But we can go back even one more step, for the pride of man arises only in a heart that is devoid of the fear of the Lord.

No amount of intellectual, theological training can give a man the fear of the Lord.

The fear of the Lord is the BEGINNING of wisdom, not the end of it.

Only God can teach the fear of God. And I believe that His classroom for all His lessons on this subject is the cross of Christ.

Wherever this lesson is God-taught, mouths are shut, hearts are subdued, wills are broken, knees are bowed, and repentance and faith flow freely. And the answer to, “Who are you?” is “I am nobody; Christ is all.”
