The Prayer of Faith

“And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” | James 5: 15-16

James assures us that the prayer of faith, the prayer that is born of and caused by faith in Christ, shall save the sick.

Of course the word “save” means “deliver.” The prayer of faith shall, most assuredly, deliver the sick from his sickness. What is “the prayer of faith”? The next verse tell us: “The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

“THE PRAYER OF FAITH IS “EFFECTUAL”. The word used by James means “in wrought”. It is a prayer wrought in, or produced in the heart of a believer by the Spirit of God. It is a prayer that is found in the heart, (II Samuel 7: 27) produced by the work of God and based upon the Word of God. Without question, the prayer of faith willingly submits to the will of God. But there is more to it than that. The prayer of faith discerns what the will of God is by the illumination of the Holy Spirit in his heart. (Romans 8: 27) And the prayer of faith is according to the will of God. (I John 5: 14)

THE PRAYER OF FAITH IS “FERVENT”. Faith is importunate. It will not give up its plea until it obtains the mercy it seeks. (Luke 11: 8-10) Like the Syrophenician woman, faith cannot be turned away. (Matthew 15: 21-28)

THE PRAYER OF FAITH IS THE PRAYER OF “A RIGHTEOUS MAN”, one who has been made righteous by the imputation of Christ’s righteousness to him and by the cleansing of his blood. It is the prayer of one who draws near to, calls upon, and is accepted of God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. (John 14: 15; Hebrews 7: 25)

AND THE PRAYER OF FAITH “AVAILETH MUCH”. The prayer of the righteous is God’s delight; therefore “he heareth the prayer of the righteous.” (Proverbs 15: 8; Proverbs 15: 29) “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” (I John 5:1 4-15) We have what we desire, because what we desire is what our heavenly Father desires – his will and his glory. We gladly subject all our desires to these two things. The prayer of faith is free of selfish desire and personal want. (James 4: 3) The prayer of faith wants what God has purposed. Therefore, it is always effectual.

If my will is subject to and in harmony with my Father’s will, I may, and most assuredly shall have what I will.

His Resurrection and Our Regeneration

“For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” | Romans 1:17

The power of God that quickened us and made us to live spiritually is, in the Scriptures, compared with that power which raised Christ from the dead.

Christ died for our sins and was raised for our justification. (Romans 4: 25) We live because He lives; and we are free from sin because our Surety, who bore our sins, is now free from them. But there is a likeness between His resurrection and our regeneration and quickening. (Ephesians 1: 19-20)

1). His resurrection is called a begetting. He is the first-begotten from the dead. Our regeneration is called a begetting. (1 Peter 1: 3)

2). His human body was lifeless in the grave, as natural men are dead in sin and without spiritual life (Romans 5: 12)

3). His human body could not raise itself, as we cannot give ourselves life. (Romans 9: 13-16; James 1: 18)

4). His resurrection was the pure, unaided work of God, as is our regeneration. (Ephesians 2: 1)

5). His resurrection led to His exaltation at the right hand of God and is where, in our representative, Jesus Christ, we are already seated. (Ephesians 2: 6)

Then the Devil Taketh Him Up Into the Holy City

“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in [their] hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.” | Matthew 4: 1-11

When sorrow crushes your heart, when trouble overwhelms your soul, when adversity presses you down, bury
yourself in Christ, in His person, His work, His Word, and His worship.

The Importance Of This Fellowship To Me

1.) I am a believer, a son of God in Christ Jesus. God has been pleased to reveal His Son in me. He is my life, my hope, and my refuge. I live by His grace and grow on His Word. And so I must constantly be where I can hear His Word in power, in the Holy Ghost, and in assurance. I must be fed on the truth!

2.) I love Christ, He is precious to me, and so all that is of Christ (His church, His ordinances, and His people) is precious to me. I not only feel that I must be identified with them in this world but it’s also my greatest enjoyment to fellowship with believers around the person of Christ. I am just not happy or content around those who do not know or rejoice in Him. Where the people of Christ go, I will go; where they lodge, I will lodge; where they die, I will die, and there I will be buried. I will not be interested by whatever temptation there may arise to leave them.

3.) I am a frail human. I am subject to fall and subject to attacks from the world, the flesh, and the devil. I am not perfect and I have not arrived. I fear indifference, sin, and coldness of heart. Therefore, I need to be exhorted daily, I need to be encouraged, I need to be comforted, and I need to be rebuked. The world and its liberal preacher who cries “peace, peace” and the religionist will not do these things for me; only the true pastor and the true believer (who know my nature and need) can be all these things to me.

4.) I am a witness. Christ said, “Ye shall be my witnesses.” I am concerned for the salvation of my family, friends, and people around the world; therefore, I desire to bring my family and friends under the word of truth and help to send pastors, evangelists, preachers, and missionaries to other towns and countries to preach Christ.

My Father, I thank Thee for this fellowship of believers. I pray you will make them a blessing to me and will make me a blessing to them!
