Reserved

”But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.” | Romans 11: 4

What is most amazing about this verse is not how many!

Although seven thousand men is no number to shake a stick at, that is not the important message our Lord is pleased to reveal here.

“I have reserved’ is the message to take away from this!

God’s sovereignty is declared above all things, he is the one who reserved those men, by keeping them from bowing their knees, or even praising the idol of Ba-al. “Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.” (1 Kings 19: 18)

If you changed that number to two, would it make a difference?

NO!

It has become a praise of men, to declare the number of souls they have won for the lord.

They say their numbers are the result of their preaching or witnessing, their so-called truth!

They declare they must be teaching the truth, look at the numbers.

But what saith the scriptures?

The word remnant means “a portion of” or “what’s left over of,” or in other words, the seven thousand men were but a small portion, compared to all that had bent their knee to Ba-al. “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” (Romans 11: 5)

“Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” By GOD’S GRACE, there is a remnant he has reserved unto himself. “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.” (Romans 11: 6)

Numbers are not the issue!

GOD’S GRACE IS!

And God Said

”And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” | Genesis 1: 3

Have you ever given any thought to the first recorded word that God ever spoke in the Scriptures?

It seems very proper and fitting to me that it would be the word “LET.”

That is a word that truly belongs to God. Over and over again in the creation of the world, God creates something out of nothing by simply speaking, “Let there be.”

When God says, “Let,” (allow, permit, give, grant, empower, enable, entitle) the result is always the same. AND IT WAS SO.

Let there be light AND THERE WAS LIGHT.

The creation of the world declares the sovereign power of God.

God but speaks such a simple word, yet, when spoken by Him, it is always effectual. “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (Isaiah 55: 11)

One day in sovereign power and love God spoke to my void, formless, dead and dark heart and said, “Let there be light” and there was light.

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4: 6)

O rejoice dear child of God!

When Prayer Is An Idol

”He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.” | Proverbs 28: 9

Prayer is the effect of a new heart given to a needy sinner.

It is the expression of thankfulness and petition toward the God of all mercy and grace.

The believer knows that the Lord is absolutely sovereign in creation, providence, and salvation and that the unchanging God, to whom he prays, shall do all His good pleasure.

Therefore the sinner, who sees by faith that there is One who rules and reigns in heaven and earth, continually asks, seeks, and knocks at the Door of mercy Himself and then waits upon Him to do His good pleasure.

I Kill And I Make Alive

”See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.” | Deuteronomy 32: 39

THERE is no greater comfort for the believer than this. This blessed truth will deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage “And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” (Hebrews 2: 15)

Our Lord is the Author (giver) of this life and the Finisher (taker) of it.

God tells us this about man: “Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass” (Job 14: 5)

The bounds He has set for us are the place, the time, and the instrument of our death to this world. The day, the hour, the moment, the means of our passing is set by the Lord. Though it may be sickness, old-age, bullet, sword, car-wreck… no matter; God determined it for each of us before the world began.

“I Kill”, saith the Lord. What a comfort that is.

Our God in His wisdom, takes us in His good time, according to His will and pleasure. We are immortal until it’s our time.

There is nothing and no-one to fear.

The Lord encourages every believer in this, saying: “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;” (Psalm 91: 5)

Let the unbelievers of the world fear terrorists; but let the people of God fear no one but God. “Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.” (Psalm 91: 6-7) This is God’s command to His people: ‘Fear not!… Thou shalt not be afraid.’

We wouldn’t be flesh and blood if we had no fears, but too much fear and worry dishonors our God and leaves us in distress and anxiety. Rest in this thought: the Lord gave us this life as it pleased Him and the Lord will take it when He pleases.

I had my old dog put down the other day and personally buried his body. Though I had another give him the injection that put him to sleep, I was the one who determined it. It was completely my decision. I was his master. He was my dog. I was the one who chose him as a pup, picking him out of all the rest, purchased him, brought him home, fed him, nurtured him, taught him, loved him. He was my dog. No-one knew him as I did. I knew when it was time and I gave the command. So it is with our Master.

Our Lord and Master chose His people before the world began, brought them into this world, led, fed, taught, bought and cared for them all the days of their lives. And in His good time… He puts them to sleep.

There is no death for those in Christ. He takes them home.

What peace there is in believing that our kind Master in His infinite wisdom and eternal purpose wounds and heals, kills and makes alive.

A Backward Proposal

”And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.” | Isaiah 4: 1

The proposal of these seven women represents the backwardness of the sin-depraved heart. This is the way all sinner’s think they can be accepted of God prior to Christ dethroning sin in the heart.

First, they are backwards in that it is the woman proposing to the man. Christ the Husband of his bride takes hold of her and not the other way around.

Secondly, their proposal of eating their own bread and wearing their own apparel has to do with the law concerning the responsibility of a husband to his first bride. “If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.” (Exodus 21: 10) (This is regarding his first wife.)

These seven women propose that the husband does not have to fulfill the law on their behalf but that they will fulfill it themselves. Christ the Husband is the end of the law for all who believe for he has fully honored the law’s requirement in providing for his bride. He is her Life-Food; he is her Righteousness; and he has united himself to her in Spirit fulfilling the whole duty of marriage so that she delights to be his.

Thirdly, when these seven women say, “Only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach”, they are saying what multitudes think. Multitudes think that all they need to remove the reproach of sin is to be called by Christ’s name.

Unless Christ is our Husband — unless Christ has taken hold of us – then the sinner will go on in this polluted idea that they are married to Christ when they are married to one who is anything but the GodMan – Christ Jesus the Lord – the husband of the Church.

Unless Christ is the perfect fulfillment of God’s holy law on the sinner’s behalf then the husband to whom we say we are married is no husband at all.

Unless Christ is our Bread (our life) we have no life.

Unless Christ is our garment of Righteousness we are naked in our sin.

Unless Christ has united himself in the duty of marriage with our spirit, we may call ourselves by his name yet it is nothing more than taking his name in vain. We still have the maiden-name of our father Adam and the reproach of sin remains.

These seven women illustrate the most popular idol of man’s imagination.

So how does the Lord declare he shall bring his bride into this marriage union? Listen and find out.

God Is Able

”With God all things are possible.” | Matthew 19: 26

We live in a religiously ignorant world where men and women are constantly using words like “want, wanted, and wanting, try, tried and trying,” in the same sentence to describe Supreme and Sovereign Deity.

A man or a woman that does so, reveals in their speech that they do not know the God and the Christ of the Bible.

“Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14)

“I know thou canst do everything.” (Job 42: 2)

“For with God nothing shall be impossible.” (Luke 1: 37)

God can do everything He wants to do, and God does everything He is pleased to do. “But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.” (Psalms 115: 3) | “Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.” (Psalms 135: 6)

• God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think. “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,” (Ephesians 3: 20)

• God is able to make all grace abound toward you that you may be sufficient in all things, and abound to every good work. “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:” (2 Corinthians 9: 8)

• God is able even to subdue all things unto Himself. “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.” (Philippians 3: 21)

• Jesus Christ is able to change your vile bodies and make them glorious like His. (Philippians 3: 21)

• God the Father is able to save to the uttermost those that come unto Him by Jesus Christ. “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7: 25)

• Jesus Christ is able to keep that which chosen sinners have committed unto Him. “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” (2 Timothy 1: 12)

• God is able to make thee wise unto salvation. “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3: 15)

• God is able to succor them that are tempted. “For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.” (Hebrews 2: 18)

• God is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless. “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,” (Jude 1: 24)
