Blood Substitute Man

”The sons of Judah; Pharez, Hezron, and Carmi, and Hur, and Shobal. And Reaiah the son of Shobal begat Jahath; and Jahath begat Ahumai, and Lahad. These are the families of the Zorathites. And these were of the father of Etam; Jezreel, and Ishma, and Idbash: and the name of their sister was Hazelelponi: And Penuel the father of Gedor, and Ezer the father of Hushah. These are the sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephratah, the father of Bethlehem.” | 1 Chronicles 1: 1-4

I do not come into this pulpit hoping that perhaps somebody will of his own free will return to Christ.

My hope lies in another quarter.

I hope that my Master will lay hold of some of them and say, “You are mine, and you shall be mine. I claim you for myself.”

My hope arises from the freeness of grace, and not from the freedom of the will.

You Can Do Nothing

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” | John 15: 5

You Can do Nothing — Bad News or Good News?

For God’s elect to profess that in and of themselves they can do nothing to please God is not a mere excuse for them to do nothing for the cause of Christ in this world. Their inability is a “daily burden.”

The apostle Paul wrote, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.” (Romans 7: 18) Certainly that is why the Gospel message is “good news” for the “true sinner.”

That perfection which God requires of me, He provides for me in my glorious Substitute and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

I can now say with Paul, “For WHEN I am weak, THEN I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12: 10) With Christ as my Substitute, Mediator, and Advocate before God I see that “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4: 13)

That surely makes the Divine revelation of my “inability” to sound like “good news” to me! How about you?

What Then Was The Bible Written For?

”For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” | 2 Timothy 1: 12

When I hear it said, “Such and such do not believe the doctrines of sovereign grace and substitution, but they love the Lord and are saved,” I wonder and ask, “What then was the Bible written for?”

Is the Bible no infallible expression of the mind of God?

Is the Bible no standard of Truth?

Are we to believe what appeals to us and deny the rest? God forbid!

God’s Word declares the oneness of Truth and condemns every departure from the Truth as a direct attack on God Himself!

Do not tell me that a man’s heart is right with God when his head contains a creed of error and denies the Person and Work of the Redeemer.

HOW EXCELLENT O GOD!

“How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.” | Psalm 36: 7

I LOVE TO SEE and bask in the Light of God’s electing love, for Christ is God’s Elect and it was in Him that His people were chosen before they ever existed, removing all doubt about Who does the saving. (Ephesians 1: 4)

I LOVE TO HEAR of Divine substitution, for it was Christ Jesus, my Lord, my Savior, and my God who substituted Himself and died in the place of the ungodly. (Romans 5: 6)

I LOVE TO THINK on God’s irresistible call of sovereign grace, for I would have resisted had Christ not made me willing in the day of His power. (Psalm 110: 3) “It is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” (Romans 9: 16)

I LOVE TO PREACH on perfect righteousness and justification, for Christ gave His perfect righteousness to His sheep as He took their sins upon Himself, remaining both “just and Justifier” of those who believe in Christ. (Romans 3: 26)

I LOVE TO BELIEVE that Christ chose me, called me, and took my place, justifying me before the Father by giving me His perfect righteousness. (2 Corinthians 5: 21)

I LOVE TO REST in the excellence of Christ’s lovingkindness, for greater love hath no man than this, that He lay down his life for his friends. (John 15: 13)

IS IT THEN ANY WONDER that Jesus Christ is everything to the saved sinner?

Wonderful! Wonderful!

“Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” | I Timothy 3: 16

Under a dark, ominous cloud of impending judgment, the prophet Isaiah sees the “Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings.”

And oh what a sight it was!

Says he, “Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given… and His name shall be called wonderful.” | Isaiah 9: 6

His name shall be called “Wonderful” because He IS “wonderful!” He is wonderful to the holy angels, and He is wonderful to the saints of God, those who know Him.

“Wonderful” is a powerful adjective.

A wonderful person is One who excites wonder; One who is extraordinary, One who is astonishing, One who is amazing, One who is separate and distinguished from others. “Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given” — the gloriously unique, incomparable God-man! He is indeed “wonderful!”

The saints of God stand in wonder, adoration, and awe before this One.

He is wonderful in all that He is, all that He says, all that He has done, and all that He is doing. He is wonderful as the Representative, Substitute, and Surety of His people – a sovereign, sufficient, successful, satisfied Savior!

In all of His glorious work of saving His people, from the very beginning to the end – He is wonderful! He came from the highest heaven to the lowest hell to bring those who deserved the lowest hell to the highest heaven – He is wonderful! “He shall not fail nor be discouraged” | Isaiah 42: 4; 53: 11 In His faithfulness to save, He is wonderful! “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou SHALT be saved” – He is wonderful!

The saints of God never cease to wonder at their Lord and Savior. They wonder at Him as they see Him in His Word, as they see Him in His Providence, and as they see Him in their salvation, now and throughout eternity.

“His name shall be called WONDERFUL” – and it WAS, and IS!
