Willfull Sin

”For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.” | Hebrews 10: 26-27

First, this text does not support the lie that God’s saves sinners and then they can be lost.

To say such a thing is an attempt to belittle the Lords’ strength to deliver.

The apostle John was clear about whom a verse such as this is speaking when he said in 1 John 2: 19: ”They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.”

Secondly, the willful sin mentioned here is the same sin that the morality-preachers who crept into the Galatians’ assembly devoted their time to by preaching the necessity of a sinner’s law-obedience

”Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.” (Galatians 5: 2-5)

It is the sin the Hebrew brethren would commit if they gave in to the pressure of those around them who compromised.

”Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.” (Romans 3: 31)

Such sin is the willful rejection of the truth that Christ the Lord fully completely accomplished salvation on behalf of his people

”Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” (Colossians 2: 8)

This willful sin is a forsaking of the truth that the Lord Jesus Christ alone upholds the law of God as the representative of those trusting him.

”But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:” (Romans 3: 21-22)

It is the willful denial of the truth that Christ by himself purged the sins of a particular, exact number of sinners chosen by God before the foundation of the world

”According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,” (Ephesians 1: 4-5)

It is the sin of deliberately compromising with those who claim Christ’s blood is only effectual by the sinners will, by the sinner’s faith in his faith, by the sinner’s pretense of devotion

”Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.” (Galatians 1: 6-9)

”O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” (Galatians 3: 1-3)

It is the willful, deliberate sin of choosing to side with father or mother who trust in their religious acts and creeds and vain traditions instead of Christ Jesus the Way, the Truth and the Life

”He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10: 37)

”Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” (1 Peter 1: 23)

This truth is always too strong for the prostituting, intellectual, compromising Pharisees and Sadducees of the day but God promises that his eternal vengeance will be far stronger!

”For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews 10: 30-31)

By all means, seek a place where Christ is preached unapologetically every time you attend the service – HE IS THE ONE THING NEEDFUL!

Speaking The Truth in Love

“Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” | James 3: 5-6

I wonder if when we preach or teach or witness to others, does the love of Christ and love for sinners come through in our words and in our countenance?

I am interested to know if our hearers detect from our presentation of the Gospel of sovereign grace (whether in sermon or articles) the love, compassion, and pity we should feel; or do we come across as harsh, bitter, and with a critical spirit?

Do we tend to take our disappointments in some and our conflicts with others into the pulpit, or classroom, or personal discussions, and tear into everybody?

This is not the way of Christ.

James said, “The wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” It was His love that chose us, gave us repentance, and led us to faith; and if any other sinner is brought from darkness, death, and error to light, life, and truth, it will be by and through the love and grace of Christ.

We are quick to say that the whip of the law will not make a man righteous, but neither will the whip of doctrine make a man a believer.
