JOHN KENT’S DYING TESTIMONY

“Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” | Colossians 3: 11

We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.

That portion cut me to the heart, while at the same time it has been my hope. If I am to stand by myself to give an account, I am lost forever; but it is the judgment seat of Christ. He is my surety and has paid all demands. I shall be tried there by a covenant of grace, not a covenant of works.

Blessed be God for His great Salvation. I bless God that the promises of the gospel met me in all my wants, wounds, and wretchedness.

I wish to die with “God be merciful to me a sinner” upon my lips.

Swift To Hear, Slow To Speak, Slow to Wrath

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” | James 1: 19

Throughout scripture, particularly Proverbs, the Lord tells us to be more ready to hear than speak. He tells us that a fool is known by his constant talk, while a wise man listens well, heeds counsel and rebuke, and ‘studieth to answer. Fact is, we have a lot to learn and don’t know much; and if any man thinketh he knoweth anything ( has all the answers) he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. So we need to do a lot less talking and a lot more listening.

Let every one of us be SWIFT TO HEAR. We don’t know everything and we won’t learn anything if we aren’t swift to hear. The ear and the mouth do not work together. When one is open the other is shut. The ear is best left open while the mouth is better left shut. If we are too busy talking we will miss something worth hearing. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Faith is not big talk, but good hearing. We have a lot to learn from God’s Word so we need to be swift to hear… ready and waiting, like a little child… eager to listen and learn. The longer we live the more we will realize that we haven’t learned much of anything worth learning. It is a crying shame that we know more about useless things than the one thing needful; that we can quote useless information but can’t quote very much of God’s Word.

The more a man grows in grace, the more he will listen and the less he will speak. Growth in grace is growth in meekness and humility. Humility makes a person dislike speaking of self and more ready to hear from others. Humility makes one listen with compassion and interest. True love is interested in the loved one, what they have to say; while self-love is more interested in what self has to say. The more a man grows in grace the more he will hate himself, and deny self. A big part of denying self is being tired of hearing your own voice. We deny self by denying that we have any self importance, knowledge, or wisdom that would make others want to hear from us. If we truly esteem other better than ourselves we would rather hear from them, than they hear from us, especially concerning our Lord’s Word. So, let every one of us be SWIFT TO HEAR.

Let every man be SLOW TO SPEAK. Scripture says: ‘A fool speaketh all his mind . . . A fool is readily known. He is quick to speak and his folly and ignorance is quickly known. But, even a fool is thought to be wise when he holds his peace. Someone once said, “It is better to keep our mouths shut and be thought a fool, than to open our mouths and remove all doubt.” How many times have we opened our big mouths too soon, spoken all our mind, let people have a piece of our mind, popped off, spoken off the top of our head, made a fool of ourselves by spouting off, and soon regretted it? How many times? Then later we curse ourselves for not keeping quiet. O’ how we should be slow to speak! Dear old brother Shanks once said, “Take every opportunity to SHUT UP!” Scripture says, “he that keepeth his mouth keepeth his soul from many troubles.” If we are slow to speak, not giving a reply or opinion too quickly, if we think about it a little bit, we may not say anything at all, or may have a change of mind. This is especially true when hearing God’s Word preached. I remember my pastor once say, ‘don’t judge something you’ve heard in five minutes that I spent five days studying.’

We may learn something from listening and be glad we didn’t speak and reveal our ignorance. The admonition of the Lord is, “God is in Heaven and thou upon earth, let thy words be few.” I remember once as a young boy, bragging and boasting of something to my friends (as young boys do, especially in a crowd); when I turned around and my dad was standing there listening. He knew me well and I wilted under his knowing look. The all-knowing Lord hears us spout off and He knows us! Best not to say much in His presence. Better to be swift to hear and slow to speak.

Let every man be SLOW TO WRATH. Sometimes we get mad or offended when someone disagrees or takes issue with us. The reason scripture tells us to admonish one another is because we need a great deal of straightening out. Quite often, after getting mad at someone for crossing us, we find out they were right and we were wrong. And if it was something helpful to us, something that might prevent us from making a mistake, we should be glad, not mad, that they crossed us. If we think too highly of ourselves we will think too highly of our opinions and get mad when someone disagree with us. Fact is, we are all sometimes foolish, and at all times sinners, so we should not be so easily offended by someone who disagrees with a foolish sinner. May the Lord make us swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to wrath. May He give us faith and wisdom by hearing, discretion in speaking, and meekness and humility to loathe ourselves and love others.

Did Christ Die For Everybody?

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” | 2 Corinthians 5: 17

There is a chorus that we love to sing which says: “Did you hear what the Lord Jesus said to me? They’re all taken away, away! Thy sins are pardoned, and you are free. They’re all taken away!”

With that good news declaration being proclaimed to sinners in the word of God, the apostle Paul said: “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3: 13,14)

As we leave one year and enter into a new year, may this thought bring great joy to our hearts: In the Lord Jesus Christ our old, dark past has been dealt with and put away. It is over! And the only thing that awaits us ahead is the new light of a sinless eternity with Christ!

He is our “mark”; let’s press toward Him!

Imparted Righteousness

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.” | 1 Peter 2: 24-25

The children of God are righteous by the implantation in their bosom of a righteous nature, which, as being born of God, is as pure as God is pure and as holy as he is holy.

For this reason we are said to be “partakers of the divine nature,” (2 Peter 1: 4) and to “put on the new man which after God [that is, after the image of God] is created” – it being a divine and new creation, “in righteousness and true holiness.” (Ephesians 4: 24)

This pure and holy nature, John tells us, cannot sin, because it is born of God, (1 John 3: 9) and is “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus,” which makes the soul free from the law of sin and death, (Romans 8: 2) being that kingdom of God in the heart, which is “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.” (Romans 14: 17)

This is an imparted righteousness, and its very essence is that sweet spirituality of mind, which is life and peace, and that holiness without which no man shall see the Lord. (Romans 8: 6; Hebrews 12: 14)

THE INFINITE CHRIST

“And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” | Matthew 7: 28-29

There is infinite value in that precious blood which He shed upon the Cross to make an atonement for sin. There is infinite pity in His heart toward sinners.

There is infinite readiness and willingness on His part to receive all who come to Him. There is infinite power in His arm to deliver and keep that which is committed unto Him. There is no sinner so depraved that Christ’s blood cannot cleanse him. There is no sinner so bound by the fetters of Satan that Christ cannot free him. There is no sinner so weary and despondent that Christ cannot satisfy him.

The promise of the Saviour himself is, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11: 28) O sin-sick soul, put him to the test for yourself, and see. Come to Christ just as you are, in all your wretchedness and need, and He will gladly receive you, blot out all your iniquities, and put a new song in your mouth.

May God in His grace cause some despondent ones to prove for themselves the infinite sufficiency of His Son.

WHEN WE SEE THE LORD

“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” | Hebrews 12: 15

A sight of Christ by faith brings peace to the conscience.

There is ever a war within, between the flesh and the Spirit, grace and nature, the old man and the new: the motions of sin in our members are ever warring against the law of holiness in our minds: wicked nature is like the troubled sea, which cannot rest; it is continually casting up mire and dirt: but the winds and seas of corrupt nature obey Christ.

He says, Peace, be still, and there is a great calm in the soul; for Christ is our Peace, he hath made our peace with God by his blood; he makes and keeps peace in our souls by his presence; our stubborn lusts will fight and reign if Christ be absent from our hearts; therefore, we cannot but be glad when we see the Lord.

Six Stubborn Statements

I realize, as much as any of you, that we are out of step with the great parade of religion today.

I realize we are putting a question mark on some very successful religious organizations, and in conflict with all the major denominations.

I realize that we are charging some popular, recognized, powerful, and hard-working preachers and religious leaders with failure to preach the true gospel of God’s glory and grace.

We are charging them with the crime of preaching “another gospel.” This is serious; for Paul said, “If any man preach any other gospel, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1: 8) I realize that we are a very small minority compared with the vast religious movement of this day. But, to me, the issues are as clear as the sun!

  1. God is infinitely sovereign in all things, including salvation; or he isn’t sovereign at all.
  2. Man, in the fall, was rendered spiritually dead, without hope, without God, without Christ, and is shut up to the power of God to give him life; or he is not dead at all.
  3. God either elected a people to eternal salvation according to the good pleasure of his sovereign will, or he did not choose anyone, and has left the success of his purpose to save totally in the hands of the creature.
  4. Christ either sufficiently, effectually, and eternally saved those for whom he died, by his obedience and death, or he actually saved no one! The ransom was no ransom at all, only an offer.
  5. The eternal Spirit of God either effectually and powerfully quickens, regenerates, and calls the elect to repentance toward God and to faith in Christ, or extends an offer to all sinners to regenerate themselves. We must go back to the question, “Is man dead?”
  6. All the elect of God will be preserved by his grace and will persevere in the faith of Christ; or none will. For, if left to ourselves, we shall eventually fall as all creatures have.

“Be still, and know that I am God”

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.’

“There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.’

“Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” | Psalm 46: 1-11

How comforting it is to know that in moments of chaos and uncertainty, God’s sheep can be still, knowing that their Great Shepherd is God.

Though the world may crumble around them, in the promise of His covenant, and the security of His blood, they can lay down in green pastures of quietness and rest, without fear and without trouble. If the God of Jacob is our refuge, then The Lord of hosts is with us. In Christ our Savior, we shall not be moved. God will help us, and that right early.

Let’s just be still, and know that He is God.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS FELLOWSHIP TO ME

“But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? | Matthew 3: 7

1.) I am a believer, a son of God in Christ Jesus. God has been pleased to reveal His Son in me. He is my life, my hope, and my refuge. I live by His grace and grow on His Word. And so I must constantly be where I can hear His Word in power, in the Holy Ghost, and in assurance. I must be fed on the truth!

2.) I love Christ, He is precious to me, and so all that is of Christ (His church, His ordinances, and His people) is precious to me. I not only feel that I must be identified with them in this world but it is also my greatest enjoyment to fellowship with believers around the person of Christ. I am just not happy or content around those who do not know or rejoice in Him. Where the people of Christ go, I will go; where they lodge, I will lodge; where they die, I will die, and there I will be buried. I will not be interested by whatever temptation there may arise to leave them.

3.) I am a frail human. I am subject to fall and subject to attacks from the world, the flesh, and the devil. I am not perfect and I have not arrived. I fear indifference, sin, and coldness of heart. Therefore, I need to be exhorted daily, I need to be encouraged, I need to be comforted, and I need to be rebuked. The world and its liberal preacher who cries “peace, peace” and the religionist will not do these things for me; only the true pastor and the true believer (who know my nature and need) can be all these things to me.

4.) I am a witness. Christ said, “Ye shall be my witnesses.” I am concerned for the salvation of my family, friends, and people around the world; therefore, I desire to bring my family and friends under the word of truth and help to send pastors, evangelists, preachers, and missionaries to other towns and countries to preach Christ.

My Father, I thank Thee for this fellowship of believers. I pray you will make them a blessing to me and will make me a blessing to them!

WHEN YOU HEAR

“We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long. O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever? Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom. For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.” | Psalm 74: 9-12

When you hear contemporary preachers talking about what God is ‘trying to do,’ or what He ‘wants to do’ and ‘would do’ if people would but cooperate; often accompanied with a plea to men and women: ‘Won’t you let God’ do this or that, it is important that you understand that they are not talking about the God of the Bible, the true and living God.

They are talking about a different god, a god of their own imagination, a god of their own making.

They are idolators!

The God of the Bible is described and set forth as One who does what He pleases, only what He pleases, and always what He pleases. (Psalm 15: 2,3; Psalm 135: 5,6)

HE IS GOD!

“What His soul desireth, even that He doeth.” (Job 23: 13) From Genesis 1: 1 throughout the whole of the Inspired Volume, the Holy Bible, GOD is set forth as the only true and living God, the Almighty One, absolutely sovereign, independent and free.

“Working ALL THINGS after the counsel of His own will.” (Ephesians 1: 11) “For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.” (Romans 11: 36)

“Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth” (Revelation 19: 6)
