The Lord’s Last Seven Beatitudes

”What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,” | Romans 4: 1-6

We read in the Psalms many times about how believers are blessed in the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ; “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” (Psalm 32: 1)

Our Lord Jesus Christ also on the Sermon on the Mount gave us nine beatitudes we read about in Matthew 5: 3-12. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God.”

Then in the apostles Paul’s last word to the elders from Ephesus he gave the church the Lord’s words about giving, “Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20: 35)

But we also find in the Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ the Lord’s last seven beatitudes given unto His church. What a great blessing the Lord pronounces upon every believer of the gospel.

Revelation 1: 3; “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.”

Revelation 14: 13; “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”

Revelation 16: 15; “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”

Revelation 19: 9; “Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”

Revelation 20: 6; “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ.”

Revelation 22: 7; “Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.”

Revelation 22: 14; “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”

May our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ give us grace to trust and rest in Him! (Psalm 62: 6-8; Isaiah 41: 10; John 5: 24)

By Grace Alone

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast” | Ephesians 2: 8-9

“By grace ye are saved.”

There is no present salvation except that which begins and ends with grace!

No man can preach or possess a present salvation except those who preach and believe that we are saved by grace alone!

The work is finished!

Any other way of salvation is dependent on the sinner and it will fail.

Assurance

“That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” | Colossians 2: 2-3

Complete in Thee! no work of mine May take, dear Lord, the place of Thine; Thy blood hath pardon bought for me, And I am now complete in Thee.

Yea, justified! O blessed thought! And sanctified! Salvation wrought! Thy blood hath pardon bought for me, And glorified, I too, shall be!

Complete in Thee! no more shall sin, Thy grace hath conquered, reign within; Thy voice shall bid the tempter flee, And I shall stand complete in Thee.

Complete in Thee — each want supplied, And no good thing to me denied; Since Thou my portion, Lord, wilt be, I ask no more, complete in Thee.

The Scarlet Line

“And she [Rahab the harlot] said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.” | Joshua 2: 21

God’s true messengers can not preach the gospel without preaching the blood of Christ Jesus the Lord because a gospel with no blood is no gospel.

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God; …and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1: 18; 23)

God chose a people and promised to save them in covenant with his Son and Spirit. Then that people became totally ruined and guilty in sin. God’s holy character demands he must make good on his promise or his word is worthless. At the same time, the soul that sinneth it must die, or God’s holy justice means nothing.

The power and wisdom of God in Christ on the cross is manifest in Christ offering his fleshly body through the eternal Spirit and thereby perfecting a people forever. God’s Christ is eternal in his Godhead and thus able to obtain eternal satisfaction, one as Man with his people and thus able to die in their place. He who knew no sin was made sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. So there, covered in flesh, covered in the marks inflicted on him by man’s depravity and hatred for Holy God and bearing the wrath of Holy Justice is not a helpless Jesus, but the Power and Wisdom of God! He suffered eternal wrath for each chosen child of God; he died the eternal death of each chosen child of God, but he rose and is the eternal Resurrection of each chosen child of God.

Now, he sits enthroned in majesty at God’s right hand with power over heaven and earth. He is sending forth the Holy Spirit to each one for whom he died; recreating an inward man in righteousness and holiness; gifting them with repentance toward God and faith in Christ; protecting each one as the apple of his eye. The God Man is both able to know the infirmity of the flesh and thus provide the comfort his people need while at the same time dwell as their Advocate with God.

Therefore all the glory in their justification is God the Savior’s; all the glory in their being made holy is God the Savior’s; all the glory in their being made a new creation by the power of the Holy Spirit is God the Savior’s; all the glory in their persevering belongs to God the Savior; and after the Lord Jesus has raised all to be with him ALL SHALL KNOW THAT ALL THE GLORY BELONGS TO GOD THE FATHER, SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT.

So as surely as that scarlet thread hanging there between Rahab and the spies bound them to one another in covenant mercy, so Christ’s blood binds — it is the New Testament in his blood – his blood is the scarlet thread which binds everyone one of his blood-bought children to him and not one shall be lost.

Jesus Is The Christ!

”But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name” | John 20: 31

The scriptures tell us plainly that if all the miraculous, holy and righteous things that Christ our Lord did had been recorded in the Scriptures, “the which if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” (John 21: 25)

However, that which has been recorded in and on the pages of divine inspiration are written for one purpose: “That you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.”

Jesus is the Christ.

He is salvation.

All the scriptures are concerning Him! We see in Acts 4: 12 that, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

The angel of the Lord said in Matthew 1: 21, “Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.”

Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ?

He is the only One who can save you from your sin.

“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he (Jesus Christ) expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24: 27)

“Lovest Thou Me?”

”And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.” | Romans 11: 6

Three times the Lord asked Peter, “Lovest thou me?”

That is the real question isn’t it?

What think ye of Christ?

Do you love Him or hate Him?

The question isn’t if you love the doctrines of grace but do you love Christ who those doctrines declare. If you love Christ you will love the doctrines that teach who He is.

The question isn’t do you love others who love Christ.

The salvation of our souls is found in loving Christ. If you would be saved you must believe upon and love the Lord Jesus Christ. Loving someone else who has saving faith won’t do your soul any good. Although if we love Christ we will love others too.

I wonder how we would respond if the Lord had asked us the same thing He asked Peter, “Lovest thou me?”

We Shall See Him as He Is

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” | 1 John 3: 1-3

No trial or suffering is easy.

If trials were without pain and discomfort, they would not accomplish the purpose for which they are sent. (James 1: 2-4)

But, when we look at all of earth’s sorrows, sufferings, and trials in the light of His eternal glory; when we shall be like Him, enjoy His presence, and partake in His perfect kingdom, then we will look on these present inconveniences as nothing.

They are not worthy to be compared to that glory.

A Sure Cure For Fretting

“And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.” | Mark 10: 48-49

David, a man after God’s own heart gives us some very inspired instruction and direction in Psalm 37: 1; when he says, “fret not.”

Surely, David writes to us with the experience of his own heart trouble, for he had much to fret about. Now, I will be the first to adrnit that our fallen, sinful nature is prone to fretting and worrying about most everything. Most of us have a worry-wart nature! Fretfulness and worrying are sins of their own punishment. How dreadful it is to lay awake all night worrying. But, David also gives us a sure cure for fretting in the following verses. He gives us a sevenfold cure!

1). TRUST IN THE LORD. (Psalm 37: 3) Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will cure fretting! When we trust Him to provide all our physical and spiritual needs, (Matthew 6: 33; Philippians 4: 19) we find comfort. We don’t look to the deeds or strength of the flesh to find our comfort, but to Him alone. We are to trust Him at all times. (Psalm 62: 8)

2). DELIGHT THYSELF ALSO IN THE LORD. (Psalm 37: 4) Rejoicing in the Lord also is a sure cure for fretting! (Philippians 3: 3) When we are taken up with the glory of His person, the power of His atonement, the freeness of His grace sureness of His mercy, it leaves no room for fretting.

3). COMMIT THY WAY UNTO THE LORD. (Psalm 37: 5) The marginal reading is, “Roll the whole burden of life upon Him” Peter put it this way, “casting all your care upon Him; for he careth for you.” (1 Peter 1: 5) When we realize that our Heavenly Father does all things well, surely we can commit our way to His wise providence and stop our fretting. (Romans 8: 28)

4). REST IN THE LORD. (Psalm 37: 7) Our Lord Jesus Christ having accomplished salvation for His elect, entered into His rest. (Hebrews 1: 3) Let us learn by His grace to cease from going about to establish a righteousness (Romans 10: 4) and make haste to enter into Him by faith and rest. (Hebrews 4: 10) When we are busy resting we have no time for fretting.

5). CEASE FROM ANGER. (Psalm 37: 8) When we try to take the matters into our own hands, we are bound to create a sure mess of things. Remember, that the wrath of man will never work the righteousness of God. (James 1: 18) God will take care of the sheep and subdue all our enemies under our feet. (Colossians 2: 14)

6). DEPART FROM EVIL. (Psalm 37: 27) We are exhorted in the scripture to put off the old man with his deeds. (Colossians 3: 8-15) By God’s grace and power He does restrain the believer from living for self and to strive to live for the glory of God. (Jeremiah 9: 23-24)

7). WAIT ON THE LORD. (Psalm 37: 34) We wait with great expectations on the certainties of His promises. (2 Peter 1: 4) God’s purpose of grace and mercy cannot fail. (Isaiah 42: 1-4; Isaiah 43: 1-5)

Believer, fret not.

My Grace is Sufficient For Thee

”And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” | 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10

GRACE IS WHAT I NEED – God’s free, abundant, satisfying, sanctifying grace!

I need grace to believe God and to continue in that faith.

I need grace to give and forgive, grace to love and be loved, grace to live and grace to die.

If I have little grace, the fault is mine; for His grace is called, “abundant grace.”

The Lord may not give gold, but He will give grace.

He may not give ease in life, but He will give grace in proportion to my need.

He will certainly send me trials, but never without the grace to overcome.

I may ask God for something which is not for my good and therefore He is not pleased to give it, but I may ask for as much grace as I will, and it will never be refused; for His throne is literally a throne of grace!

“Lord, fill me with Thy grace, make me an object of Thy grace, let my lips speak of Thy grace, and let my life be lived as a trophy of Thy grace!”

Justified From All Things

”For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” | Acts 13: 36-39

Barnabas, coming to Antioch, saw with the eyes of faith the grace of God and was glad.

He was glad that the Lord was pleased to bless His word to the salvation of His elect, and exhorted the believers to cleave to the Lord.

Being glad, cheerful and happy to behold the grace of God is the experience of every believer.

We’re glad to be where the Lord is pleased to meet with His people… glad to be where Christ is honored in the preaching of the Gospel… and glad that we want to be there…
