Is Anything Too Hard For The Lord?

”And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?” | Genesis 18: 10-13

As Sarah laughed and Abraham doubted the promise of God to them and for them, this was His answer. “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”

This shows at least two things concerning our Great and Wonderful Redeemer and ourselves:

1) What a rebuke to our unbelieving and sinful flesh. When we doubt the promises and grace of God we surely need to be reminded; ‘is anything too hard for the (our) Lord?’

2) What a testimony to the longsuffering and goodness of the Father to the likes of us, for He gives us what we do not deserve which is His mercy. But with tenderness and compassion He reminds His covenant people; ‘is anything too hard for me?’

Let this simple but straight forward phrase of infinite and caring grace cause us to seek Him, love Him and worship Him evermore: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”

True Conversion

”Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.” | Psalm 143: 7-8

When the Word of GOD converts a man, it takes away from him his despair, but it does not take away from him his repentance and sorrow for sin.

True conversion gives a man full pardon from all sin, but does not make him presumptuous. He continually is “coming to Christ.”

True conversion gives a man perfect rest, but does not stop his growth in grace, works of faith and labor of love.

True conversion gives a man security and assurance in Christ, but does not allow him to leave off being watchful. “Keep thine heart, for out of it are the issues of life.”

True conversion gives a man strength and righteousness, but it never lets him boast nor have any confidence in the flesh.

True conversion makes Christian duties, service, worship, and study to be a joy and a pleasure, never burden- some nor grievous, and certainly never considered as a way to find favor with GOD.

True conversion brings a man to live FOR GOD. He does what he does for the glory of GOD. True conversion brings a man to live WITH GOD. He seeks and desires blessed communion with the Redeemer.

The most treasured times are those hours of sweet fellowship with Him and His people.

Unseen Things

”While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” | 2 Corinthians 4: 18

SALVATION IS CHRIST. The Lord Jesus Christ HIMSELF is the sum and substance of God’s glorious salvation. An old Israelite named Simeon looked into the face of the Lord Jesus Christ and said, “Mine eyes have seen thy salvation.” (Luke 2: 25-35) The beloved John said, “This is the record that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life” (John 5: 11, 12) The apostle Paul said, “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3: 4)

SALVATION COMES THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST. God’s salvation comes to lost sinners through simple, sincere, childlike faith and trust in Christ as He is revealed in the Scriptures. “To him give all the prophets witness, that through faith in his name, whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins” (Acts 10: 43) The Lord Jesus told the apostle Paul that “by faith that is in me” sinners receive the forgiveness of sins and that inheritance prepared for the saints of God. (Acts 26: 13-18)

The Scriptures teach throughout that sinners are “saved by grace through faith” (Ephesians 2: 8-10; Romans 3: 24-28; Romans 5: 1); that is, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as He is revealed therein. The Word of God says to all who will hear, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16: 31)

SALVATION IS A FREE GIFT OF GOD’S GRACE. The sovereign God of the Bible freely gave His only begotten Son to purchase and secure the salvation of His sinful people, which He accomplished to perfection. (Hebrews 9: 12; Hebrews 10: 9-14) That is what the gracious God of the Bible freely did FOR sinners. However, that is not all that must be done in saving sinners. There must be a divine work accomplished IN sinners. Sinners, being spiritually dead, must have life, a new life, a divine life, which produces repentance, faith, conversion, perseverance in faith, etc. (Philippians 1: 6) This also God freely and sovereignly does in the salvation of sinners. It is God who shows sinners their sinfulness, their guilt, and their desperate need of Christ and salvation. Likewise, it is the great and gracious God of the Bible who reveals Christ to their souls. “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4: 6; Matthew 16: 13-17; 1 John 5: 20), whereby they are said to be born again, “not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, BUT OF GOD.” (John 1: 13)

We Ought To Obey God

“Unto you that fear my Name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings.” | Malachi 4: 2

Oh, what a mercy for the Church of Christ that the God and Father of the Lord Jesus has not left her as He might justly have left her, to perish in her sins, but has provided for her a Saviour, and a Great One, and does from time to time encourage every poor, self-condemned sinner to hope in His mercy!

The very things, poor, exercised soul, that most try your mind are the very things that make such a Saviour suitable to you.

You are dark; this makes the Sun of righteousness exactly suitable to enlighten you.

You are cold; this makes you want the Sun to warm you.

You are cheerless and cast down; this makes the Sun to gladden you.

You are barren and unfruitful, and lament that you cannot bring forth fruit to God’s glory; so you want the Sun to fertilize you.

You are, at times, very dead in your feelings, and can scarcely find any inclination to pray, meditate, or read the Scriptures; you want the Sun to enliven and revive you.

Are not, then, these very trials and temptations necessary to make you feel that the Lord Jesus is the Sun you need, the very Sun that David felt Him to be, when he said: “For the Lord God is a Sun and a Shield?” (Psalm 84: 11)

What value do those put upon the Lord Jesus who make a fire for themselves, and walk in the sparks of their own kindling? (Isaiah 50: 11)

What is the Lord Jesus to those who know no trouble of soul?

What real and earnest prayer or fervent longing for His appearing?

What breathings to see and feel His blood and righteousness?

Oh! it is sharp exercises, manifold trials, and powerful temptations that make the soul really value the Lord Jesus.

The Greatest Privilege in All The World

“If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)” | Ephesians 3: 2-4

BRETHREN, as redeemed sinners, we have the greatest privilege in all the world: to be counted among the people of God and gather with them to worship our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As enlightened sinners we have the greatest work to do: make known in this world the glories of the Savior who has saved us.

As children of God, we have the most glorious destiny in all the world: to be made like the Lord Jesus Christ. In light of these things, do not the troubles and disappointments of this life become small?

O, let us, with sincere hearts, press on to lay hold of the wonderful salvation for which God has laid hold of us, letting nothing distract us from the goal.

We will never regret the loss of anything which is lost for the sake of Christ. But, O, the regrets of the Esau’s of the world who for comfort, riches, worldly success, self-vindication, or anything else, draw back from their dedication to Christ and His gospel.

Brethren, at all costs, press on!

The end is glorious to those who persevere!

In Everything Give Thanks

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” | 1 Thessalonians 5: 18

Every time you insist that I am a sinner, you call me to remember the benefit of Christ my Redeemer, upon whose shoulders, and not mine, lie all my sins.

So when you say I am a sinner, you do not terrify me, but comfort me immeasurably.

The Lord’s Last Seven Beatitudes

”What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,” | Romans 4: 1-6

We read in the Psalms many times about how believers are blessed in the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ; “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” (Psalm 32: 1)

Our Lord Jesus Christ also on the Sermon on the Mount gave us nine beatitudes we read about in Matthew 5: 3-12. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God.”

Then in the apostles Paul’s last word to the elders from Ephesus he gave the church the Lord’s words about giving, “Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20: 35)

But we also find in the Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ the Lord’s last seven beatitudes given unto His church. What a great blessing the Lord pronounces upon every believer of the gospel.

Revelation 1: 3; “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.”

Revelation 14: 13; “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”

Revelation 16: 15; “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”

Revelation 19: 9; “Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”

Revelation 20: 6; “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ.”

Revelation 22: 7; “Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.”

Revelation 22: 14; “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.”

May our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ give us grace to trust and rest in Him! (Psalm 62: 6-8; Isaiah 41: 10; John 5: 24)

By Grace Alone

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast” | Ephesians 2: 8-9

“By grace ye are saved.”

There is no present salvation except that which begins and ends with grace!

No man can preach or possess a present salvation except those who preach and believe that we are saved by grace alone!

The work is finished!

Any other way of salvation is dependent on the sinner and it will fail.

That I May Know Him

THAT I MAY KNOW HIM

“The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD.” | Hosea 1: 2

Before the Apostle Paul’s conversion, he knew the law, he knew the traditions, and he thought he knew God.

But when the Lord crossed his path on the Damascus Road, and revealed himself to Paul, then he found out who Christ is.

He was never the same.

And from that day forward Paul’s aim and desire was to know more about the one who knew him.

It was all about knowing a person, not just knowing a doctrine. “I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” (2 Timothy 1: 12)

Paul was not afraid to preach the one he knew, he was not ashamed of him, because the one He knew was not ashamed of him. This gave him a boldness to preach his Gospel, and he wanted others to know this one that he knew. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1: 16)

Grace Brings Salvation

“Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, how is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.” | John 4: 9

The woman of Samaria told the Lord Jesus that the religious Jews, out of their self-righteous pride, would have no dealings with the Samaritans, people who the Jews considered to be too sinful for salvation.

But thank God, the Lord Jesus Christ came to save and to have dealings with sinners.

He is the friend of sinners. (Matthew 11: 19)

Christ did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. (Matthew 9: 12:13)

The Lord Jesus Christ came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19: 10)

Now the question for us to consider, are we sinners? Yes!

Do we need the salvation from the hand of the Lord? Yes!

This is a faithful saying, Christ came to save sinners. (1 Timothy 1: 12)
