When, EXACTLY Did God Save Me?

“Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.” | 1 John 2: 7

WHEN did the Lord first begin to deal with my soul?

WHEN, exactly, did I first begin to believe?

WHEN did I actually become a Christian?

A child of God?

I gave up trying to answer those questions a long time ago, as being totally unimportant.

George Whitefield once said, “I have heard of a person who was in a company with fourteen ministers of the gospel, some of whom were very eminent servants of Christ, yet not one of them could tell the time when God first manifested himself to his soul.”

It is quite sufficient to me that, by the grace of God, I do believe in the Christ of Scripture. And as a believing sinner I continue to pray for grace to continue to believe in Christ. (Hebrews 10: 38,39)

God Delivers His People

“And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.” | Isaiah 30: 18

How blessedly God times His interventions. He is never too early, and never too late.

It is the impatience of unbelief and the fretfulness of self-will which so often makes us think the Lord is tardy.

Often God “waits that He may be gracious” in order to bring us to the end of ourselves, and that the deliverance may more evidently appear to be from Himself.

At other times, He delays His intervention on behalf of His own for the greater chagrin and dismay of their enemies.

A Wonderful Master

“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:” | 1 Corinthians 1: 30

Christians serve a wonderful Master.

They serve Him who is… all ear to hear them, all hand to uphold them, all power to
protect them, all wisdom to direct them, all goodness to relieve them, all mercy to pardon them.

He First Loved Us

“We love Him, because He first loved us.” | 1 John 4: 19

Because He first loved us, there are some things that we, God’s people, love about Him: We love His sovereignty. We love the fact that He has the power, ability, and right to do as He pleases. We especially love that truth because He said, in Christ, it pleased Him to make us His people. (1 Samuel 12: 22)

We love His election. We love who He elected to save. He said He chose to save sinners, and that is what we are. (1 Timothy 1: 15) We love His predestination. It is the means that He said He would use to conform us to the image of Christ, and that is our greatest desire and need. (Romans 8: 29)

We love His grace, because it is what gave Christ to us.

We love His mercy, because it is what gave Christ to the cross of our punishment. It is what shed His blood for the payment of our sin.

We love His redemption, because it is finished. We are washed clean, made pure, and accepted in Him.

We love His righteousness, because it has covered everything that we are in our flesh with His perfection.

We love His glory, because it magnifies Him.

We love His word, because it reveals Him.

We love His message, because it points us and calls us to Him.

We love His people, because there is no greater pleasure on earth than being with those who love Him and desire to worship and praise Him together.

The glorious gospel of Christ is in the fact that He loved us, even when there was nothing about us to love. For that, we love Him.

ALL OF GRACE

“But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” | Ephesians 2: 4-5

In heaven’s glory we shall forever adore and praise our great God for the wondrous mystery of his grace, by which we are saved.

Everything in the great work of salvation sets forth the splendor of the grace of the Most High God. What do we see in election, predestination, redemption, regeneration and preservation, but His grace?

The whole work of salvation displays God’s rich, free, almighty, irresistible, sovereign, saving grace in Christ.

In salvation, as well as in creation, all things are of God, all things are by God, and all things are for God. He works all our works in us, and in Him alone all praise must be forever!

Unbelief and Its Consequences

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.” | Romans 1: 20-23

The carnal heart will always give itself the honor, glory, and praise… thinking that it is the source of accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as man’s personal Savior.

It will foolishly comfort itself in self-righteous pride believing that soon heaven shall be its final home.

But a regenerated sinner will say with a broken but thankful heart, “Salvation is of the Lord and therefore I am what I am by the grace of God.”

Sovereign Grace

“And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? | Acts 16: 25-30

Every sermon sent by God Almighty will always find its focus in the Person of the Lord Jesus.

He is the Alpha and Omega of life. He is the answer to all eternal questions and the purpose of all things. Comfort in all trials is found by hearing the message of Christ which proclaims His glory, work, and honor. We will never be found to honor Him more than to hear and believe His Gospel which, beginning with Moses and throughout all the prophets and in all the scriptures, declare those things that are concerning Him.

DO WE REALLY BELIEVE GOD?

“What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” | Luke 15: 4-7

If we truly believe God, we will serve Him with confidence and peace, simply trusting His total sovereignty, power, wisdom, and grace.

The fear of man shall not be a threat to us.

The favor of man shall not be a motive to us.

The circumstances of the hour shall not pressure us, and the desire for results shall not alter our message nor cause us to employ the popular methods of others.

If we believe God, we will simply perform our responsibilities faithfully and wait upon the Lord to work His purpose according to His will.

True Profession

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth.” | 1 John 3: 18

The thing that troubles me most about the validity of our profession of Christ is that we talk, preach, and sing of love, mercy, and forgiveness. But then, when the opportunity comes for us to love the unlovely, forgive the offender, and bind up the wounded heart, we join the circle of Pharisees, clutching our stones, ready to wound and maim. A profession that does not produce is a false profession. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5: 22-23)

WHEN I CONSIDER

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” | Psalms 8: 3-4

It is said that if our universe was a beach, earth would be nothing more than a grain of sand.

Astronomers tell us that there are over a hundred billion stars. Our sun (which is a star) is only a tiny dot among several hundred billion others forming our galaxy. Traveling at the speed of light, which is 186,282 miles per second, it would take approximately one hundred thousand (100,000) years to reach the Milky Way which is far closer to us than many other galaxies that can be seen with powerful telescopes.

We cannot perceive the infinite depth and vastness of God’s universe and yet David says that it is but the work of God’s fingers.

The next time you gaze into the sky on a clear night, I hope you will think about the vastness, the boundless and the limitless power of God, then ask yourself the question that David asked.

“What am I, that God would be mindful of me?”

“Who am I, that God would visit me in love, mercy and grace to save me?”

The answer is a simple yet amazing one.

I am a child of God!
