Live In An Attitude Of Thanksgiving And Prayer

”Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” | 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

The Apostle Paul says, “Rejoice evermore, pray without ceasing and give thanks to God in all things”.

This is the will of God; that we rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks.

What we are, what we have, where we are, and all that happens in the life of a believer are all according to the will of God for us.

Let us rejoice in prosperity or adversity, and live in an attitude of thanksgiving and prayer, even when we have no particular request.

Very ungrateful is the man who does not set so high a value on the love of God, the righteousness of Christ, and the hope of eternal life that he allows anything in this life to overshadow that wonderful gift of grace.

How can I murmur and complain when I am a child of the King of kings?

Happy Fear

”Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.” | Philippians 4: 4

God’s people rejoice in the Lord always.

They rejoice that His grace is always sufficient, that His blood cleanses them from all sin, that by His imputed righteousness they are justified before the law, that His love for them never fails, that by His providence all things work together for their good, that His intercession for them before the Father is never ceasing and that their names, for His sake, are written in heaven.

Holy Ground

”Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.” | Psalm 32: 11

I have been reading a history of the year 1776 in the American Colonies.

After the British had left Boston, George Washington expected they were heading for New York. Therefore, Washington moved a contingent of the Colonial Army there in order to defend the city. One gentleman, Lieutenant Isaac Bangs, sought as much information about the city as he could discover. In order to investigate the seedier side of New York City, Bangs went to a place called the Holy Ground.

It was a foul slum in which every debauchery imaginable could be indulged. It was called “The Holy Ground” because a great deal of it was owned by the local church. It was commented that, “If there was trouble after dark in New York, it was nearly always in the Holy Ground… Less than a week after the continental army moved into the city, all hell erupted in the Holy Ground.”

My first thought was, “Isn’t that the way it always is with things that man calls holy.”

I have yet to know of a church where “holiness” was the primary focus that such holiness did not just prove a thin veneer over all manner of evil. Let a church lay claim to a place and call it holy; it will not be long until the place will be known for great wickedness.

Once again it is proven that the things which are highly esteemed among men are an abomination to God.

The Bible calls some things holy.

God is Holy. “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty. The whole earth is filled with His glory.” He is set apart from all His creation as the one God over all.

Jesus Christ is Holy: “So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

“You are the Holy One of God.”

He is set apart from the rest of humanity as the only one essentially born of God and having a Divine nature and the one chosen of God to save His people.

And God’s church is Holy.

Her members are called “saints” which is from the same Greek word as “holy.”

The church, herself, has not designated herself to be holy: “Holy” is what God has called her.

She recognizes that the term “holy” does not describe some virtuous character about her but signifies that she has been chosen, redeemed and called by God; set apart from the reprobate, condemned and dead world. She has been set apart by God, to God and for God. She is no better than the rest of the world, just greatly privileged.

In these holy things, there is goodness, purity, and decency.

Rejoice In The Lord

“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” | Philippians 4: 4

David said: “Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.” (Psalm 97: 12)

“And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.” (1 Samuel 2: 1)

Isaiah wrote: “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.” (Isaiah 61: 10)

We may not be able to rejoice in the world.

We may not be able to rejoice in anything that we see in ourselves.

But we can always “rejoice IN THE LORD!”

God’s Gift

”And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.” | Luke 2: 15

As we give our gifts to one another over the next few days, remember that God’s gift of eternal life is like our gift giving in at least three ways.

First, when we give a gift we give it to whomsoever we will.

Likewise, God gives eternal life to whomsoever he will.

“Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come! It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.” (John 17: 1-2)

“Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I know not.” John 17: 9)

“For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.” John 17: 24)

Suppose you gave a gift to someone you love and strangers began to accuse you of being unjust because you did not give them the same gift. You would think they were absurd. They have no right to question you or accuse you. Neither does any sinner have a right to question God.

“What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?” (Romans 9: 14-21)

Secondly, when we give a gift we purchase it ourselves.

Likewise, God sent his Son who paid the purchase price of his precious blood to give his people eternal life in him.

“For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.” (Leviticus 17: 11)

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” (Hebrews 9: 22)

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” (Acts 20: 28)

“Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.” (Job 33: 24)

Lastly, when we give a gift we give it to the one for whom we purchased it. Likewise, God irresistibly creates his people anew and gives the gift of eternal life to us through faith in Christ.

We do not purchase a gift then set it on a shelf and hope someone will come claim it as their own. We take the gift to the one for whom we bought it and make sure they get it. So does God. But here is a difference. When we give a gift the person to whom we give it has the ability to receive our gift. But each sinner to whom God shall give this free gift of eternal life does not even have the ability to receive it until God even gives faith and repentance to receive this gift in his Son.

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John 3: 5)

“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.” (John 6: 53)

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” (Ephesians 2: 8)

“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” (Galatians 4: 4-6)

Believers glory in the LORD, giving all the praise only to God, telling everyone we can about the great gift Giver and the gift of his Son.

“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God; Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men; And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” (2 Corinthians 9: 8-15)

“Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.” (1 Chronicles 16: 8)

Rejoicing In Hope

”For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” | Romans 5: 6-11

THE Word of God plainly, clearly, and thoroughly teaches that man by nature is contrary and opposed to God in every way.

For example, God by nature is infinitely and immutably holy – man by nature is unchangeably and incurably sin; God is light – man by nature is darkness; God is truth – man’s whole life by nature, without God, is a lie; God is infinitely good – man by nature is inherently and unchangeably bad.

In a word, man is a natural born enemy of God. In fact, the natural man’s mind is enmity against God – not merely at enmity, but enmity itself! (Romans 8: 5-7) Thus men by nature love darkness and deception rather than God’s precious Word. (John 3: 19) Therefore man’s greatest need is to be reconciled to God.

It is a continual burden on my heart that so many preachers of our day, rather than preaching God as He is to sinners as they are, (Sinners in the hands of an angry God) are preaching a god who is palatable, agreeable, suits the taste of fallen, human nature, a god whose chief attribute is love rather than holiness, a god who loves everybody the same, who gave His Son as a sacrifice for the sins of all mankind, a god who is trying to save all men.

These preachers, for personal advantage and gain, (the good opinion of men, and numbers) are preaching a false god, a false gospel, and thus giving their hearers a false hope. Their disciples have never been brought to bow before the true God as mercy seekers.

How could they?

They have never heard of the true God of the Bible. How can they ever be reconciled to God?

Dear souls, God can only be worshiped by beggars, mercy seekers, before His sovereign throne of glory and grace.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, “Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth laborers into His harvest.” (Matthew 9: 38)

Alleluia: For The Lord God Omnipotent Reigneth

“The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works. He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke. I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD.” | Psalm 104: 31-34

Although the sovereignty of God is universal and absolute, it is not the sovereignty of blind power.

It is coupled with infinite wisdom, holiness, and love. And this doctrine, when properly understood, is a most comforting and reassuring one.

Who would not prefer to have his affairs in the hands of a God of infinite power, wisdom, holiness and love, rather than to have them left to fate, or chance, or irrevocable natural law, or to short-sighted and perverted self?

Those who reject God’s sovereignty should consider what alternatives they have left.
