Receiving

”Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.” | 1 Peter 1: 9

If you buy something, you purchased it.

If you earn something, you worked for it.

If you deserve something, then you merited it.

But when you receive something, it was a free gift.

Our free gift is grace and faith in Christ, even the salvation of our souls.

It Pleased The Lord To Bruise Him

“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.” | Isaiah 53: 10

The death of Christ pleased every attribute of the Father.

The death of Christ pleased God’s wisdom.

The death of Christ enables God to be both just and justifier.

The death of Christ pleased God’s justice.

Christ suffered for the sin of His people until the debt was paid in full.

The death of Christ pleased God’s mercy and grace.

The death of Christ enables God to be merciful to His people in justice because their sin has been put away.

Since Christ died God can justify the ungodly, God can forgive sin, and God can accept His people into His presence because He is pleased with them in Christ.

IS THE LAW SIN?

“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.” | Romans 6: 14-15

If I measure a crooked wall with a perfect plumb line, it reveals the crookedness of the wall, but does not remove it.

If I take out a bright light on a dark night, it reveals to me all the pitfalls and hindrances, but it does not remove them.

Now the plumb line and the lamp do not create the evils which they point out. They neither create nor remove, but simply reveal.

So it is with the law.

It does not create the evil in man’s heart; neither does it remove it. But with unerring accuracy, it reveals it.

What shall we say then?

Is the law sin? God forbid!

Married To Christ

“Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.!” | Romans 6: 1-4

While marrying a young couple yesterday, I asked them if they would promise to honor and love one another, “till death alone shall part you.” We believers were married to the law in the sense that we were bound and responsible to honor it. We were “under the law,” and though sinful and incapable of honoring it, it was nonetheless our duty before God to do so perfectly. Paul uses this beautiful comparison to show what our relationship is now to the law, and to the son of God.

Being dead to the law, we are married to Christ, and yet not considered “adulterers.” In other words, we have no requirement to honour the law, and yet are guiltless before the law.

Free from the law O happy condition, Jesus hath bled and there is remission. Cursed by the law and killed by the fall, Christ hath redeemed us, once for all.

It may seem extreme to you that I would say, we have no requirement to honor the law, but think about it believer. If we are responsible to honor God’s law, then we must inhabit Hell forever. Christ honored it for us, and paid our sin debt, and we add nothing to what He has done for us. Nothing.

This does not mean we do not respect the law, and even try to obey it both outwardly and inwardly, but we have found that what we would, we do not, we cannot. Paul even says we “delight in the law of God, after the inward man,” but understand. We are dead to the law for righteousness, and we are married to Another.

We cannot, do not, shall not honor the law with our works, though we do desire to and strive to, but our Husband did, and we are one with Him as man and wife are said to be before God, one flesh. We bring forth fruit unto God because our works, just like our persons, are accepted “in the Beloved.” Let us praise Him both now and forever, our Husband, our Beloved, the Lover of our souls and Him Whom our soul loveth.

THE GOSPEL PROCLAIMED

“Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” | Galatians 1: 3-5

Our Lord sent the apostle Paul to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentile world.

God was pleased to bless the message and call out a multitude of guilty sinners to Himself. Many churches were established in the region of Galatia. After Paul had been imprisoned in Rome for the gospel’s sake, many false teachers came among the churches preaching a false message of works salvation. The apostle called it, “another gospel” or a “perverted gospel.” He also pronounced a strong curse upon all who declared such a message of, “Christ plus our efforts and righteousness equal salvation” (Galatians 1: 6-12)

Let us consider four things Paul plainly states about the true gospel of the grace of God revealed in these verses.

1). The reason why the Lord came in the flesh, “That he might deliver us from this present evil world.” It is very obvious that no man is able to deliver Himself from the pit of sin and guilt. Only a fool would say, “I need no Redeemer.” This is why the Lord came, to completely deliver and effectually redeem His people from their sin. (Matthew 1: 21; Romans 11: 26) We can be certain that He did not fail. (Isaiah 42: 4; Romans 4: 25; Romans 8: 32) Any preaching that does not set Jesus Christ forth as the complete and effectual Deliverer, is “another gospel.”

2). How did He accomplish this deliverance? “Who gave himself for our sins.” The redemption of the Lord’s sheep came at a great price. (Acts 20: 28) He purchased us with His own blood. (1 Peter 1: 18) Atonement and payment for sin can only be achieved by Jesus Christ our great High Priest. (Hebrews 9: 12; 1 Peter 3: 18; 2 Corinthians 5: 21; 1 John 4: 10) Any preaching that does not declare Jesus Christ’s triumphant and complete atonement for sin is, “another gospel.”

3). Why Jesus Christ came and why He died, “According to the will of God and our Father.” If it had not been for the predestinating purpose of God and His eternal decree, Jesus Christ would not have died. (Acts 2: 23) If Christ had not died, none would be delivered. Salvation is always accomplished, determined and dependent upon God alone. Any preaching that makes salvation dependent and determined according to the will of men is “another gospel.” (John 1: 12-13; James 1: 18; Romans 9: 15-16)

4). What shall we say concerning this great salvation, “To whom be glory for ever and ever.” The grand design and ultimate end of everything God wills and performs is His glory. (Exodus 33: 18-19; Galatians 6: 14; 1 Corinthians 1: 30-31) Any preaching that does not give God all the glory in the salvation of sinners is, “another gospel.”

On The Death of Christ

“Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.” | 2 Samuel 9: 6-7

Christ did not die to win our sympathy, nor did He die to win our friendship.

He died so that a holy God could save our souls.

He died so that “GOD COULD BE JUST AND THE JUSTIFIER OF THE UNGODLY.”

His death is not a PATTERN but a PAYMENT.

His death is not an EXAMPLE, but an ATONEMENT.

His death does not REVIVE US, but it REDEEMS US.

If you are not saved, it is not because His blood is not sufficient nor does not have the power to save, but because you reject this remedy.

God will not pardon without satisfaction by the blood of Christ.

If you ever see this “Fountain opened,” you will cry with the woman of Samaria, “Give me this water, that I thirst no more.”

SIN AND FORGIVENESS

“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.” | 1 Corinthians 12:12

We love to hear the gospel that tells us of sin forgiven, of being washed from our sin in His precious blood.

Sin is too familiar with us. We have committed it, we are affected by it daily, and it is our daily trial.

Sin of our past, sin is our burden today, sin as it is, is our own affliction until we enter into our eternal rest.

It is a battle we have entered into that is a war without and within… but, thank God for Ephesians 1: 7 says; “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sin;” how? “according to the riches of his grace!”

Forgiveness of sin, what a joy, what greater news can a sinner hear?

God’s free grace gave us His son to redeem us by His own blood.

God’s free grace came and effectually applied that blood to our souls!

It was free grace that forgave us all our sin, “where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” (Romans 5: 20)

THE REVELATION OF GOD

“And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” | Genesis 2: 16-17

God’s first revelation to man was as his sovereign, telling him what he could and could not do.

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” | Genesis 3: 15

God’s second revelation to man was, as his Savior and Reconciler doing for him what he could not and would not do for himself and showing this to him in the light of a promised Redeemer.

What It Is To Love Christ

“For I know that in me (that is in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.” | Romans 7: 18

I am so thankful that the Spirit moved the apostle Paul to pen this verse of Scripture. It is one that truly shows me what I am by nature… totally depraved! It drives me to examine myself in light of God’s word and moves me to be thankful for the fact that I can observe something of the struggle that the Scripture declares to be found in every regenerate. And it makes God’s promise to be a great comfort to me… Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

Redeemed In Christ

Here is a word from God that should brighten the day for you – “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree.” (Galatians 3: 13)

When the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, hung upon the cross, he was made to be a curse, an object of Divine wrath and Judgment, so that we who believe might never endure the curse of God’s wrath. He did not simply make it possible for us to be redeemed. He did not simply make us redeemable.

The text says, “Christ Hath redeemed us from the curse of the law!” This redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ is the central theme of Holy Scripture, the foundation of our faith, and the only hope we have of eternal salvation.
