There Is No Better Gospel

”And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it. And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee. But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.” | Mark 15: 2-5

Charles Spurgeon’s grandfather, who was also a pastor, said of his grandson, “He may preach the gospel better than I can, but he cannot preach a better gospel.”

Spurgeon denied that he could preach the gospel better than his grandfather, but he agreed that there is no better gospel to preach.

I whole heartedly agree.

There is no better gospel than the gospel of God’s electing love that declares God chose to save sinners who could not and would not ever do anything to deserve it.

There is no better gospel than the gospel of God’s love for sinners that declares God set His love on sinners who never would have loved Him unless God first loved them.

There is no better gospel than the gospel of substitution where the Son of God took the place of sinners and suffered and died in their place.

There is no better gospel than the gospel of redemption in the blood of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who shed His blood to fully pay the sin debt of a sinful people, who were the enemies of God.

There is no better gospel than the gospel of God’s free and sovereign grace to sinners that declares God saved a people with no help from them or their works, and God gives His salvation to them freely (without any condition they must meet).

There is no better gospel than the gospel of Christ the successful Savior of sinners that declares the Lord Jesus Christ didn’t “try” to save anyone. Christ the Savior came to save the elect people the Father gave Him to save and that is exactly what He did.

Different men may be more or less gifted to preach the gospel than others, but I intend to hear them as support them as long as they preach THE gospel because the blessing is not in the man preaching.

The blessing is in the glorious Savior who he preaches.

Preaching

”And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.” | 1 Corinthians 2: 3

C. H. Spurgeon is called by many “The Prince of Preachers”.

Spurgeon wrote, “For many years my own preaching was exceedingly painful to me, because of the fear and trembling which beset me before entering the pulpit. Often, the dread of facing my hearers has been overwhelming.

“I wrote to my dear grandfather, who was a minister of God for many years, and told him of the overwhelming mental emotions, sickness of body, and trembling fears which gripped my heart when I preached the Word of God.”

The old gentleman wrote back, “My son, I have been preaching the gospel of Christ sixty years, and I still feel the same trembling fears that you feel. Be content to have it so. When these emotions go away, your strength will also be gone. When you are able to preach the gospel and think nothing of it, the people will think nothing of it, and God will do nothing with it.”

What Is The Gospel?

”Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.” | Matthew 1: 21

When we feel oppressed and overcome by our sin and our sins, what a precious promise “He shall save His people from their sins.”

He shall save.

Notice the certainty of the language.

His people are the objects of this great salvation from their sins.

Here is what I need saved from… my sins!

He shall save His people from the punishment of sin.

He shall save His people from the power of sin.

We can now do what we previously could not do when we were under the power of sin.

We can now believe, repent, and love because sin no longer has dominion.

And one day, blessed thought, we will be saved from the presence of sin.

We will commit sin no longer.

We will no longer remember what it was to be a sinner.

Then we will understand.

“Thou shalt call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.”

Faithful Gospel Preachers

”I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.” | Psalm 116: 1-5

After listening to messages preached by faithful men, I have noticed that in the early years of their ministry, there is a lot more vinegar mingled with grace.

But in the latter years of their ministry, there is far more love and grace and much less vinegar.

Isaiah spent the early part of his letter writing “woe to you, woe to you” and the latter half saying, “woe is me.”

Let me be far more eager to judge myself and far less eager to condemn others.

Grace and forgiveness make God’s people want to live more honorably but law and condemnation never does.

God will keep and teach His people.

I am only to proclaim His word and receive them as brethren, praying for them as I wait on Christ to work in their heart.

The Power Of The Word

”And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan’s sake? And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he. And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.” | 2 Samuel 9: 1-3

Things will make us moral, but they will not last.

If man’s wisdom, learning, eloquence, or religious persuasion could reform, we would be a reformed people.

But, in spite of all the churches and religion we have today, wickedness abounds on every hand.

Religion has very little influence on our life.

Napoleon said, “Religion is to keep the poor from murdering the rich.”

Things cannot change the heart.

They cannot put into the heart the love and peace of God.

They will not cause the heart to bow to His will.

The only thing that will do this is the Gospel, the Word which the Lord has given.

The Gospel alone shows sin in its true light, and gives us hope of mercy.

When the Gospel is preached in the power of the Spirit of God, and it is received and believed, an immediate and wonderful change takes place. The sinner leaves all his other false hopes; he is freed from the slavery to this world, and becomes the willing servant of Him who redeemed him.

Just Preach Christ To Me

“And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.” | Acts 16: 14

The apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1: 23, “We preach Christ crucified”.

The same man told Timothy in 2 Timothy 4: 2, “Preach the Word”!

We cannot preach Christ apart from The Word.

We cannot know who a man is, what he believes or what he desires, apart from his word.

We cannot know what a man thinks, how he feels or what he has purposed in his heart to do, apart from his word.

Therefore, we cannot know who Christ is, what He has done, who He has done it for or why He has done it, apart from His Word!

To preach Christ, is to preach His Word.

And to truly preach His Word, is to preach Christ in every word of it!

All The Counsel Of God

”And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” | Acts 20: 25-28

Paul said to the Ephesian Elders, “I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.” By that he did not mean that every time he preached, he attempted to cover all the various doctrines of the Gospel. He meant that he never held anything back.

In a courtroom, the witness is required “to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” This is necessary because we can tell a lie by means of telling only half the truth! This is an attempt at deception while technically telling the truth. But you know as well as I do that only half the truth is a lie!

How many preachers in our day say many good and true things, yet they only tell half the story?

It is called perjury in our court systems.

In the great court of heaven it is treason!
