Christ Is All

”Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” | Colossians 3: 11

“I AM”

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” (Exodus 3: 14)

To His elect people God is everything all the time.

He has always been God and He will always be God.

Yet, there is nothing more comforting and assuring to the saved sinner than to know that God is the ever-present “I AM.” He declares Himself to be “I AM” leaving what follows to be unwritten since He is the believer’s everything.

Jesus Christ is God and concerning His elect God says:

They are weak, “I AM” their strength.

They are poor, “I AM” their riches.

They are in trouble, “I AM” their help and comfort.

They are sick, “I AM” their healing and their health.

They are in darkness, “I AM” the Light of the world.

They are lost sheep, “I AM” the Door and the Good Shepherd.

They are unrighteous, “I AM” their righteousness.

They are unholy, “I AM” their holiness.

They are ungodly, “I AM” their God.

They are nothing, “I AM” their everything.

They are hungry, “I AM” the Bread of Life.

They are in darkness, “I AM” the Light of the world.

They are unprofitable branches, “I AM” the True Vine.

They are dead, “I AM” the Resurrection, the Way, the Truth, the Life.

As a preacher of the Gospel, the message I am to preach is clear and plain. “Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I AM the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 18: 2)

Dear sinner, if you are in Christ, God is all these things to you.

Strive To Enter In

”Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” | Hebrews 4: 14-16

The Lord said in Matthew 11: 12, “The kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.”

While it is true that salvation is a work of God in which we are passive, men dead in sins do not actively seek the Living God.

It is equally true that when God does give a dead sinner life, that one who was dead in sins becomes very active.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:” (Matthew 7: 13)

He “strives to enter in at the straight gate.”

He earnestly “seeks God with all his heart.”

“I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.” (Luke 11: 8)

He is “importunate” (‘insistent’) in prayer.

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” (Romans 8: 12-13)

He seeks to “crucify the flesh” and “through the Spirit to mortify the deeds of the body.”

“Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” (2 Timothy 2: 10)

He is willing to “endure all things for the elect’s sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus.”

The rest that the believer enters is not one of laziness, apathy, or indifference.

If our belief in sovereign grace has lead us to excuse our sin, justify our disobedience, dampen our enthusiasm, become indifferent to our responsibility, or make our love and zeal grow cold… we have not understood sovereign grace.

While all of our former religious activity does need to be killed, may God deliver us from using His grace to have a passive attitude that is not taught in Scripture!

Beggars With Glorious News

”Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.” | 2 Kings 7: 9

Three little robins sit in their nest right above my back garage door.

They sit there day after day in absolute helpless dependency.

If mama robin does not bring food and put it into their mouths, they will soon die.

They seem to be always hungry, and whenever mom approaches they open their mouths wide, trying to get all the food they can.

I would to God that we, as believers, could be as those little robins when it comes to spiritual food, the “Bread of Life” – “Jesus Christ and Him crucified for guilty sinners;” when it comes to reading or hearing the Word of God; that we could always do so with such eagerness and hunger.

“Break Thou the bread of life, Dear Lord to me / As Thou didst break the loaves, Beside the sea / Beyond the sacred page, I seek Thee, Lord / My spirit pants for Thee, O living Word.”

Unbeliever, your helpless dependency is as great as those little robins in their nest.

If God does not cause you to hunger and bring you food, you will soon die… die in your sins!

If God does not open your heart to hunger and thirst after Christ and to receive Him as He is; to submit to Him, to love Him, to cleave to Him as your most prized possession, your doom is inevitable!

Perhaps the Lord has already caused you to hunger after Christ and life.

Perhaps you truly desire salvation from sin. “He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.” (Luke 1: 53)

What wonderful news for hungry sinners!

Believe!

Believe on Christ!

Believe on Christ now!

He that believeth shall be saved.

Why Good Works?

”This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.” | Titus 3: 8

If my children follow my example, what kind of people will they be?

Will they be faithful or unfaithful?

Generous or stingy?

Content or complaining?

If every marriage has mine as its example, will people be happily married?

If every church member were just like me, what kind of church would this church be?

If every employee were just like me… I could go on and on, but the point is “Faith without works is dead.”

A faith that does not manifest itself in every area of my life is not saving faith!

The first thing the Lord said to each of the seven churches in Asia was, “I know thy works.”

It is our works that prove the reality of our faith.

The example we give is what we really are!

Be Not Afraid, Only Believe

“While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.” | Luke 8: 49-50

These are the words our Lord spoke to Jairus, when his friends came telling him of his daughters death and of the lack of necessity for him to trouble the master any further.

Natural men always set limits on the ability and willingness of Christ to save sinners.

While she hung on by a thread, they had hope. But as soon as the thread was gone, so was their hope.

Because of their unbelief and doubt, they were neither permitted to follow or enter in to see His glory.

God give us the quiet submissive faith of Jairus, who patiently waited on the Lord and was permitted, by the Master to see the glory of life in His touch.

Works, Dead or Good

”And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.” | Ruth 1: 16-17

Dead works are those things men do and look to for the hope of their salvation.

Good works are those things believers do when they are looking to Christ alone for all the hope of their salvation.

Dead works are things men glory in.

Good works are never acknowledged by those who do them.

Dead works are performed out of obligation and for reward.

Good works are willing acts of service done out of love for Christ.

Lord, purge our conscience of dead works to serve Thee, the true and living God. “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Hebrews 9: 14)

Make us a peculiar people unto Thyself, zealous of Good works. “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” (Titus 2: 14)

Which Thou hast ordained that we should walk in. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2: 10)

Cleanse Us From All Sin!

”Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” | 2 Corinthians 9: 15

A man is never so fit for believing as when he is most unfit.

It is unfitness, not fitness, that is really required.

What is fitness for being washed? Filth!

What is fitness for receiving pardon? Guilt!

If you are filthy, if you are guilty, you have all the fitness that is required.

So, come and find in Jesus Christ all that meets your greatest need.

Wait On The Lord

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” | Psalm 27: 14

Waiting on the Lord is an attitude that is completely foreign to the natural man.

That’s why the new man struggles while he truly desires to wait on the One who loves him and gave Himself for him.

He knows that the Lord is working all things after the counsel of His own will and that whatsoever comes to pass has been eternally purposed by the Lord for His glory and the eternal good of His elect and shall not fail to be brought about.

But though these truths are known and loved by the people of God… still they experience the battle within to take matters into their own hands.

O may the Lord help us to wait upon Him.

The Purpose Of God

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.” | Romans 8: 28-30

We believe, according to the scriptures, that the Lord our God is a God of purpose, absolute and unalterable purpose. (Romans 9: 11-26)

Before the world began, Almighty God sovereignly purposed all that ever comes to pass in time.

Nothing in this world is left to chance.

Everything is moving toward the predetermined end of God’s eternal purpose with absolute, precise accuracy.

Even a casual reader of Holy Scripture has to face this fact: The God of the Bible is a God of purpose.

The Triune Jehovah is a God of purpose, and clearly teaches us several things about the purpose of God:

“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.” (Romans 11: 33-36)

The purpose of God is eternal. (Ephesians 1: 3-14)

The purpose of God includes all things. “According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:” (Ephesians 3: 11)

The purpose of God has for its peculiar design the everlasting benefit of God’s elect. Everything that God has purposed is for the ultimate, spiritual, and eternal benefit of his covenant people. “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,” (2 Timothy 1: 9)

The purpose of God is immutable and sure. The Lord himself says, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.” (Isaiah 46: 10)

And in its ultimate end, God’s purpose will accomplish the eternal salvation of his chosen people and the glory of his own great name.
