Grace Be With You. Amen.

“The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.” | 2 Timothy 4: 22

If our hope lies in us, or in what we do, it is a delusion.

“Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees. But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled. Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?” (Job 4: 4-6)

If our hope lies in this church it is a lie.

“The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.” (Psalm 147: 11)

If our hope stands with one foot on the work of Christ and the other foot on our own merits, it will fail us.

“Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.” (Psalm 33: 20-22)

Hope in Christ is the only hope which can be acceptable to God.

“I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.” (Psalm 16: 7-9)

Our only hope of Heaven will be through Christ alone.

Here our hope begins, and here our hope ends.

Grace Given To Unworthy Sinners

“Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:” | Ephesians 3: 8-9

The first link between my soul and Christ is not my goodness, but my badness; not my merit, but my misery; not my standing, but my falling; not my riches, but my need.

He comes to visit His people, yet not to admire their beauties, but to remove their deformities; not to reward their virtues, but to forgive their sins.

New Mercies Every Morning

”This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” | Lamentations 3: 21-23

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

When I think of the Lord’s mercies and compassions being new every morning, I must confess that I leave none of them unused each day.

There is never a carryover of unused mercies and compassions.

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.”

That One Great Glorious Name

”If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” | Acts 4: 9-12

What is hope?

Hope is expectation with a reasonable basis.

What the world calls hope is an empty wish.

It’s like a child holding a present on their birthday hoping to find what they want.

But, hope in the scriptures is defined as a person: Christ in you the hope of glory.

This hope comes through a Godly persuasion… “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” (2 Timothy 1: 12)

Also, “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 8: 38-39)

The believer’s hope is not ‘I hope, I hope, I hope.’

But it is hope founded upon the Lord Jesus Christ.

“He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” (1 John 5: 12)

Our expectations fully depend on His appointments, His coming as the God man, His obedience, His suffering, His death, His resurrection, and His present reign in glory.

“Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;” (1 Timothy 1: 1)

May the Lord be pleased to make Him our hope for the glory of His own name.

My Hope Is In Thee

”Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” | Psalm 119: 105

I count it my honor and happiness that I preach to a free people who have the Bible in their hands.

To your Bibles I appeal.

I entreat, I charge you to receive nothing upon my word any farther than I can prove it from the Word of God.

And bring every preacher and every sermon that you hear to the same standard.

Be Not Afraid, Only Believe

“While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.” | Luke 8: 49-50

These are the words our Lord spoke to Jairus, when his friends came telling him of his daughters death and of the lack of necessity for him to trouble the master any further.

Natural men always set limits on the ability and willingness of Christ to save sinners.

While she hung on by a thread, they had hope. But as soon as the thread was gone, so was their hope.

Because of their unbelief and doubt, they were neither permitted to follow or enter in to see His glory.

God give us the quiet submissive faith of Jairus, who patiently waited on the Lord and was permitted, by the Master to see the glory of life in His touch.

Christ Himself Is Our Hope

Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. | Hebrews 6: 19-20

Hope is an earnest desire for an object, accompanied with the expectation of obtaining it.

Spiritual hope includes that, but it also includes something natural hope does not.

It includes the sure and steadfast assurance that we shall receive what we hope for.

The object of the believer’s hope is Christ.

Our expectation is to be with Christ in glory in His perfect righteousness.

The assurance of our hope is Christ, who himself is our Hope.

Our hope is sure and steadfast because in and by Christ all God’s covenant-promises are fulfilled for us, apart from our works.

Let Us Come Boldly

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!” | Isaiah 52: 7

Oh, how God’s people rest in His absolute sovereignty over all things concerning them.

That is their good news.

That is their peace.

That is their hope of salvation.

No matter how much their sin has abounded, it will never be able to reign over His mercy and grace that He has mightily supplied in the death of His Son!

Every soul that the Father sovereignly chose, the Son sovereignly redeemed, and the Spirit has sovereignly called will through the ages of eternity cry, “Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth!”
