Unto You Therefore Which Believe He Is Precious

“Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,” | 1 Peter 2: 7

It is impossible for those who believe in Christ to fully express the preciousness of Him to them.

(1) He is precious to every believer because He is their life. “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” (1 John 5: 12)

(2) He is precious to every believer because He is their clothing. The best robe that the Father gives or imputes to every son that He receives is the righteousness of Christ. It is the robe of His spinning by His perfect obedience and sacrifice.

(3) He is precious to every believer because He is their food. Just as the Israel of old feasted on the Paschal Lamb so God’s spiritual Israel feasts on the Lamb of God. We continually feast upon his flesh and drink His blood; we continually look to His one sacrifice that atones for all the sins of His elect.

(4) He is precious to every believer for He is our hiding place. In the storms of life we say with the psalmist: “yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be over past” (Psalm 57: 2)

Christ’s Atonement

”He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” | Matthew 16: 15-17

Some people love the doctrine of universal atonement because, they say, “It is so beautiful. It is a lovely idea that Christ should die for all people on the earth.”

They say, “Universal atonement commends itself to the instincts of human nature; there is something in it that is beautiful.”

I admit there are some times when beauty may be associated with error; but while natural men admire the doctrine of universal atonement, I will show you what such a supposition involves.

  1. If Christ on the cross intended to save every person by His death, then He intended to save people who were already dead and in eternal condemnation; for there were myriads already cast away because of their sins for which (you say) He died.
  2. If it were our Lord’s intention to save all people, how deplorably has He been disappointed; for we have His own testimony, “Broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many be which go in there at.
  3. To imagine for a moment that our Lord was the substitute for the sins of all men and that God, the Father, having poured out His wrath on their substitute, afterwards will punish the sinners themselves for the same sins for which Christ died, seems to conflict with ideas of divine justice. In fact, to hold that Christ offered an atonement and satisfaction for the sins of all men, and that some of those people will be condemned for those same sins, appears to be monstrous inequity!

God forbid that we should attribute such conduct to our just and wise God!

THE INFINITE CHRIST

“And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” | Matthew 7: 28-29

There is infinite value in that precious blood which He shed upon the Cross to make an atonement for sin. There is infinite pity in His heart toward sinners.

There is infinite readiness and willingness on His part to receive all who come to Him. There is infinite power in His arm to deliver and keep that which is committed unto Him. There is no sinner so depraved that Christ’s blood cannot cleanse him. There is no sinner so bound by the fetters of Satan that Christ cannot free him. There is no sinner so weary and despondent that Christ cannot satisfy him.

The promise of the Saviour himself is, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11: 28) O sin-sick soul, put him to the test for yourself, and see. Come to Christ just as you are, in all your wretchedness and need, and He will gladly receive you, blot out all your iniquities, and put a new song in your mouth.

May God in His grace cause some despondent ones to prove for themselves the infinite sufficiency of His Son.

He is Altogether Lovely!

“But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:” | Acts 24: 14

Put the beauty of ten thousand worlds of paradises, like the Garden of Eden in one; put all trees, all flowers, all fragrances, all colors, all tastes, all joys, all loveliness, all sweetness in one. O what a lovely and excellent thing would that be! And yet it would be less compared to that beauteous and dearest well-beloved Christ than one drop of rain, compared to the whole seas, rivers, lakes, and foundations of ten thousand earths!

“Yes, He is altogether lovely! This is my Beloved, and this is my Friend!” (Song of Songs 5: 16)
