The Salvation Of A Malefactor

”And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” | Luke 23: 35-38

An old timer wrote: “My friend, you may think to live very well without Christ, but death will be unbearable without Him. You are confident and secure at present, but death will destroy your confidence. Your tree is fair and strong now; but when the wind comes, if your root is not in the Rock of Ages, down your tree must come forever. You may think these worldly pleasures and ways of flesh are so good; but when your years increase any you reach the bottom of this poisoned bowl, they will be as bitter as wormwood; and worse that gall shall be the daintiest of your drinks.”

When I read this, I gave thanks to our Lord for delivering us from “THIS BODY OF DEATH through our Lord Jesus Christ,” and old age and death are no longer to be feared but DESIRED; that death is no longer the LOSS of life and joy, but the GAIN of eternal life and glory.

While we mourn the temporary absence of our dear loved ones whom the Lord has been pleased to take to glory, we do not sorrow as those who have no hope; for we know, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His people,” (Psalm 116: 15) and leaving this world and going to be with Christ is the GREATEST BLESSING of all the blessings!

Grow In Grace

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” | 2 Peter 3: 18

The apostle’s exhortation to us as God’s people who have been called by faith to believe on Christ is, “grow in grace.”

When God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the doctrine of grace. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2: 8-9)

They grow in the object of grace – which is Christ Himself! “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” (2 Timothy 1: 9) “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2: 1)

And when God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the practice of grace.

Psalm 111: 4 says, “…the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.” And all who “grow in grace” say, “As He is, I desire to be.” True growth in grace says with David, “I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with THY likeness.” (Psalm 17:15)

The doctrine! The object! The practice!

“Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (2 Peter 3: 17,18)

OH! SWEET GRACE, BLESSED GRACE

“For by grace are you saved.” | Ephesians 2: 8

We are saved by grace—free grace, rich grace, sovereign grace, distinguishing grace—without one atom of works, without one grain of creature merit, without anything of the flesh.

Oh! Sweet grace, blessed grace!

Oh! what a help — what a strength — what a rest for a poor toiling, striving, laboring soul—to find that grace has done all the work—to feel that grace has triumphed in the cross of Christ—to find that nothing is required, nothing is needed, nothing is to be done!

Sins Taken Away

“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” | Romans 5: 6-8

There is a chorus that we love to sing which says: “Did you hear what the Lord Jesus said to me? They’re all taken away, away! Thy sins are pardoned, and you are free. They’re all taken away!”

With that good news declaration being proclaimed to sinners in the word of God, the apostle Paul said; “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philipians 3: 13, 14)

This Man Receiveth Sinners

“And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.” | Luke 15: 2

While the self-righteous Pharisees and Scribes withdrew from the Lord Jesus Christ and then harshly criticized Him, many publicans and sinners drew near to hear Him.

What a blessing from the Lord to have a willingness to draw near to Him (John 6: 44) and then to have ears to actually hear a word from Him. (Act 10: 33) His words are words of life. (John 5: 24) His words are words of salvation. (Romans 1: 16; Hebrews 4: 12)

The worst thing the Pharisees and scribes said of the Lord, “This man recieveth sinners, and eateth with them;” is the best thing any sinner could hear.

It is not sin that keeps a man from hearing the good news of the gospel of Christ, it is his presumed righteousness he is going about to establish by his religious deeds. (Romans 10: 1-4)

No man will ever come to Christ while he is resting in the deeds of the law for salvation. (Romans 3:1 9-20) It is only by the almighty power of His sovereign grace that will effectually quicken us and make us alive in Christ that will cause us to draw near to Him, to hear Him and to believe Him. (John 5: 21; Ephesians 2: 1; 1 John 5: 1)

This Man receives sinners! What a miracle of amazing grace.

I TRUST HIM

“And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.” | Acts 17: 6-7

It is not my hold of Christ that saves, but His hold of me.

It is not my promise to Him which keeps me, but His promise to me.

It is not my works which make me righteous before God, but His perfect life and obedience.

My best is but filthy rags. I trust Him on the strength and authority of His Word.

He died for those who believe; Lord, I believe! He promised to save all who trust Him! He said, “All that my Father giveth me shall come to me and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” I came to Him, I am coming to Him, and by God’s grace, I shall continue to come.

Give Me Such Grace

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” | Ephesians 1: 3-6

No one has ever done anything to or against me that can even begin to compare with what I have done to and against my God, both before He saved me and since. If God in heaven has forgiven me, it should be easy for me to forgive you of anything. Spirit of God, give me such grace!

Who Cares About Gods Love?

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. | Hebrews 2: 9

Men have been told over and over again that God loves them, I would ask you what good does the love of God do you?

Does it make you desire to live to His glory, or cause you to call on Him daily, or attend a place where the gospel is preached?

Do you ever even think about the love of God? Does God enter your thoughts at all?

When God loves a sinner He does something effectual for that sinner; “In the time of love I passed by thee and said unto thee live I said live.” (Ezekiel 16: 5-8) He loved Jacob before he was born; he had not done any good or evil that the purpose of God according to election might stand.

The same thing will happen to Gods elect that happened to Paul, hear his words; “When it pleased God who separated me from my mothers womb, and called me by His grace to reveal His Son in me.” (Galatians 1: 15) “In love having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” (Ephesians 1: 4-5)

The average person absolutely doesn’t care at all about the love of God, and to be told over and over again that God loves them is obscene.

God loves his elect and he will manifest his love to them in time.

If you would take a close look into Gods word you would see that no one told men indiscriminately that God loves them. Those to whom the love of God was manifested were overwhelmed by the truth that God loved them, and had always loved them, with an everlasting love. (Jeremiah 31: 30)

Men today are not enthralled with the love of God, it is just ho-hum, so what else is new.

A Throne of Grace

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” | Hebrews 4: 16

We are coming, not to a throne of law, nor to a throne of strict justice, but to a THRONE OF GRACE.

The words throne, majesty, power, and omnipotence all leave me awed and frightened; but the soft, gentle word GRACE stirs my spirit and heart to venture nigh in sincerity, humility, and hope!

For, though there are a thousand defects in my prayers, it is a throne of GRACE.

Though there are many defects in my knowledge, it is a throne of GRACE.

Though there are so many weaknesses in my spirit, it is a throne of GRACE.

Though my faith is so weak and dishonoring to the King, it is a throne of GRACE.

Grace loves, grace forgives, grace abounds, grace is sufficient; and His grace is greater than all my sins.

I Shall Be Satisfied

“Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries. | Psalm 135: 6-7

Those who have been saved are those who are “being saved.” (I Corinthians 1:18; Philippians 2:12, 13)

Those who have learned of Christ are those who “are learning” of Him. (John 6: 45; Matthew 11: 29)

Those who know the Lord are those who “desire to know Him.” (Philippians 3: 7-10)

Those who have seen the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ are those who continue to cry, “Lord, I beseech Thee, show me Thy glory.” (Exodus 33: 18) These are the people who by the grace of God can say, “As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness” (Psalm 17:15)
