When God Is Displeased With A People

”And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” | Luke 18: 7-8

When God is exceedingly displeased with a people, it is not necessary, in order to their punishment, that He should bury them alive by an earthquake, or destroy them by lightening.

If He only leaves them to themselves, withdraws His blessings from their counsels, and His restraint from their passions, their ruin follows of course, according to the necessary order and connection of causes and effects.

If God gives up a people to the way of their own hearts, they will, they must, perish!

When a general corruption of morals takes place, when private interest extinguishes all sense of public virtue, when a profligate and venal spirit has infected every rank and order of the state, when presumptuous security and dissipation increase as danger approaches, when, after repeated disappointments, contempt for God, and vain confidence in imagined resources of their own, grow bolder and stronger, then there is reason to fear that the sentence has already gone forth, and that the execution of it is at hand.

Contemporary Religion

”Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.” | Song Of Solomon 1: 4

NEVER in the history of the world has there been so much religious activity.

Religious men and women, young and old, are actively involved in political, social, and moral issues in the name of God (and for the good they do, I am truly thankful).

In the matter of “soul-winning,” evangelists, missionaries, pastors and personal witnesses “compass sea and land” (Matthew 23: 15) in their efforts to “win” sinners to Jesus (and for the success they have, generally speaking, I am truly sorry!).

The true “soul-winners” are those evangelists, missionaries, pastors and witnesses whose chief endeavor is to set forth the Lord Jesus Christ and him crucified before sinners as He is revealed in the Word of God, leaving the results to God the Spirit.

”O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?” (Galatians 3: 1)

The Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of Glory, is not standing by someplace waiting for “soul-winners” to bring sinners to Himself.

”For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2: 2)

The Christ of God comes to the sinners He saves.

Where they are, as they are, through the preached Word, opening their hearts and taking up residence there by the Holy Spirit.

Sinners cannot come to the Lord Jesus, nor can they be “won” to the Lord Jesus by the wiles of some alleged “soul-winner.”

”Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.” (Psalm 110: 3)

The Lord Jesus Christ came into this world to SAVE sinners, and He is doing just that!

He pursues, subdues and renews whom He wills. ”For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.” (John 5: 21)

“Salvation is of the Lord.”

”No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.” (John 6: 44,45)

“Lord Jesus, come quickly.” Come to your saints here today. Come to lost sinners here today. “Draw us and we will run after Thee”

Forsake All or Be Forsaken

”If any man come to me and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple… Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” | Luke 14: 26, 33

The Lord is not telling us to hate our families, for He gave commandment to love one another.

He is telling us that nothing and no one is to have preference over Him; that we are to love Him above all, and be willing to forsake all for Him.

This is the true love of God shed abroad in the hearts of all His true people. It is supernatural, born again love that the world does not have and cannot understand; accusing those who have it of not loving their families (hate).

When brother Groover was taking his family to the Mexican mission field, a few unsaved relatives accused him of not loving his family. So it will be with all who love the Lord supremely and forsake their flesh and blood to go where He is, where His gospel is; all who would rather be with God’s family than their own.

On the other hand, any man or woman who forsakes Christ; (and to “forsake the assembling of ourselves…” to forsake the gospel, is to forsake Christ) anyone who ignores Christ for any reason, should not think it unreasonable that He will someday ignore them.

One who forsakes Christ to further their career, should not think it unreasonable that He would forsake them for His own glory. One who is more interested in making money than hearing the gospel of the unsearchable riches of Christ, should not think God to be cruel when He takes everything away from them someday.

One who forsakes Christ for their family, should not think it wrong when he forsakes them in favor of His family.

One who forsakes the assembly of the church on earth, should not be surprised when Christ does not allow them into the assembly of the saints in Heaven.

One who is not interested in the worship and fellowship of Christ now, should not complain when He has no interest for them in the end.

One who is unmoved and unfeeling upon hearing the gospel of Christ’s unspeakable love, sufferings and sorrow, should not think Him hard when He is unmoved by their cries of misery at the judgment.

NO, NO!

It is not the Lord who is unreasonable, hard and uncaring, it is the unbeliever.

“Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;” (Proverbs 1: 24)

If you end up without Christ someday, do not blame Him, for He “called and you refused. He warned and you would not listen.

“Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.” (John 10: 25)

“I told you”, He said, “and ye believed not”.

I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE NOR FORSAKE THEE

“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” | Hebrews 13: 5

Children of God often find themselves in distress and sorrow in this world and in uncertainty about the happenings of
this world.

So we need to be reminded often that our comfort and confidence comes from the certainty of salvation in Christ and His constant presence with His people.

His precious promise to never leave nor forsake His people comforts our heart in the worst sorrow and the greatest uncertainty about the things of this world.

The Lord God Will Come

The Lord sometimes, and perhaps not unfrequently, induces darkness, that His light may be more striking. He hedges up His people’s way with thorns, that the almighty hand, which removes them, may be more plainly seen.

Oh! it is blessed to be brought low, to be surrounded sometimes with difficulties, to see no way of escape, and all human resources fail, purposely that our extremity may be the Lord’s opportunity, and when we are most low, Jesus may be most exalted.

My soul, is it now even-tide in the soul, as it is eventide in the day? Art thou stripped, humbled, convinced of thy nothingness?

O look to all-precious, all-suitable Jesus.

Hear what the Lord saith: “When the poor and the needy seek for water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I, the Lord will hear them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. I will open rivers in dry places, and fountains in the midst of valleys.” (Isaiah 41: 17-18)… “At evening-time it shall be light.” (Zechariah 14: 7)
