In Spirit And Truth

”God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” | John 4: 24

Here are two principles of worship without which all worship of God is vain.

God must be worshipped in spirit – a heart worship – as opposed to mere forms and ceremonies, going through the motions with body and lip service, etc.

If the heart does not pray it, the prayer is not accepted.

IF the heart does not sing it, the song is not accepted.

If the heart does not believe it, it is vain to profess it.

Those who worship God, must worship in spirit.

”For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10: 10)

Those who worship God in spirit must also worship Him in truth.

“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45: 22)

God has revealed Himself in His Word of truth as who HE is; how HE saves; by whom HE saves; the way in which any one must approach unto Him to worship.

All worship that is contrary to truth is vain worship.

All who worship God must worship Him in truth.

Someone has said, “How astonishing is the fact, that man dares to introduce his miserable inventions to deform the scriptural simplicity of divine; as if God who makes all things perfect, had, in this most important institution, forgotten to direct the use of altars – magnificent vestment – pomp and ceremonies. When will man, with child-like simplicity, follow gospel rules?”

Living Godly In Christ

”But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” | 2 Timothy 3: 10-12

You see, these gatherings here, wherein we worship Him in songs of praise and edify one another, precious though they are, are merely practice sessions for when we shall really “Sing His praises.”

”Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.” (Exodus 15: 1)

So, away with carelessness, indifference and the mere form.

”Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.” (1 Chronicles 16: 23)

Let us endeavor to “worship Him” in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

What Do You Think Of The Cross?

”He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.” | 2 Kings 18: 4

I am confident that the religious, superstitious Israelites were horrified when King Hezekiah destroyed their sacred symbol (which they worshipped, the serpent of brass Moses had made) calling it “a (worthless) piece of brass.”

Hezekiah declared it to be of no value in the worship of God, but rather a hindrance to the worship.

I can understand a person’s interest in that brazen serpent.

It would be extremely interesting to see it.

It would be interesting to see the rod of Moses, the tables of the law, the tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, and the cross on which our Lord died!

But interesting is all that these things can be certainly not inspirational, nor edifying, nor of any spiritual value, nor of any consequence where our relationship with God is concerned.

These are but types, pictures, and things which the Lord used to point our faith, hope, and trust to CHRIST JESUS!

In the knowledge, love, and worship of God, “CHRIST IS ALL!”

Hezekiah shocked Israel when he called Moses’ serpent “A PIECE OF BRASS.”

We may shock religion today by calling the cross on which Christ died “A PIECE OF WOOD,” or the tomb in which He laid, “A HOLE IN THE GROUND,” or the winding sheet in which He was wrapped, “A PIECE OF CLOTH;” but, having served their purpose, that’s all that they are.

And to make them of any spiritual significance is to be in danger of idolatry!

Idolatry is a subtle tool of Satan and must be avoided.

“God is a spirit, and they that worship Him MUST worship Him in spirit and truth.”

True believers have no superstitions regarding days, hallowed places on earth, religious relics, symbols, signs, nor ancestors.

Christ is our sabbath, our altar, our prophet, priest, and king.

To Him and only to Him we come, bow, believe and worship.

“They Were Pricked In Their Heart…”

”Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” | Ephesians 3: 20-21

The best preaching is that which pricks our heart.

This is the only kind of impression that is a saving impression.

It is not if I please your ears, your eyes, your sense of smell, but if your heart is pricked.

Many attempts are made to make people religious from the outside.

It is done with clothes, and how you wear your hair.

This is Wal-Mart salvation, for all I need for this kind of salvation I can buy at Wal-Mart.

Some say salvation comes by eating or not eating, by drinking or not drinking.

Again that is Wal-Mart salvation.

Our Lord said, it is “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man, but that which cometh out of the mouth, that defileth a man.”

It is the heart which must be changed.

If your conversion is produced in the flesh, it will only be concerned with fleshly things.

Never be satisfied with a religion which does not affect your heart.

Never be satisfied with worship that is not from the heart.

If you are to be blessed by the hearing of this Gospel, then you must be pricked in your heart.

Worship

”Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” | Hebrews 10: 23-25

It is the duty of all believers to meet together for worship, praise, study, and fellowship.

1). Because of God, who has appointed worship, Who approves of it, Who is glorified in it, and Who should be worshipped.

2). Because of Ourselves, we need to “draw nigh to God,” to “seek His face,” to praise, pray, and be refreshed and comforted – with other believers.

3). Because of Others — our families, friends, and neighbors who may, by our example and encouragement, be brought to seek the Lord.

But worship is not only a duty and commandment, worship is a blessed privilege.

David wrote, “Blessed is the man whom Thou choosest and causest to approach unto Thee, that he may dwell in Thy courts.”

We are blessed to have the desire to worship God and hear His word.

We are blessed to have the freedom to go to the place of worship.

We are blessed to have a family of believers with whom to meet and worship.

We are blessed to have elders and preachers called of God to preach to us and teach us the word.

We are blessed to have the physical strength to go to the house of the Lord and worship.

“Blessed INDEED is the man whom Thou choosest and causest to approach unto Thee.”
