Stewardship

”As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” | 1 Peter 4: 10

Thank God that we have the privilege of being personally and vitally involved in the lives and ministry of so many pastors, churches, and missionaries.

They are the servants of our Lord; and it is our blessed privilege to pray for them, encourage them, and help them in every way that we can.

“Let us not be weary in well-doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6: 9)

Let us not look so much on our own things as on the things of others.

The best way I know of receiving God’s blessings is to give them away; and the surest way to keep God’s mercies flowing into your silo is to have the feed door always open, for God has appointed no man nor church to be his bankers, only his stewards.

“Lord, teach me your word and I’ll teach others. Reveal your gospel to me and I’ll preach it to all who will listen. Shed abroad your love in my heart and I will love others. Forgive me as I forgive. Entrust me with gifts and I will give to those who have need. Help me, by thy grace, to be a channel of blessings and not a dead sea.”

May I ask a question?

Who is on your mind and heart today?

Or even this week?

Whom have you encouraged?

Whose burden have you lifted?

For whom have you prayed?

For whom have you called?

For whom have you written?

What contribution have you made to the furtherance of the gospel?

To those who reach out, I encourage you to continue to do so; and, to those who have not yet discovered the joy of giving and helping, I say, “It is His way!”

The Rule We Are Under

”For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.” | Galatians 5: 13-15

How did Noah get the animals in the ark?

He simply said, “Here is the ark.”

”Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.” (Galatians 6: 1)

The LORD drew the animals into the ark, not Noah.

Noah simply displayed the ark.

This is the chief motive of the law of love written on the believer’s heart.

I know that Christ is in his throne; my heart is not to vainly attempt to do the work only Christ has the right and the power to perform.

I simply point them to Christ the Ark.

Christ will effectually work in our hearts to draw us in to him.

The law of Christ always remembers who is able to make us stand and who does not have that power.

”Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every man shall bear his own burden. ” (Galatians 6: 2-5)

The direct, effectual rule of Christ who works in the heart he has made new is the rule the believer is under.

Before Christ came in power I was only flesh attempting to obey God and appear righteous before men with only the Ten Commandments as my rule.

I could not even hear what the law said of me.

”Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6: 6-10)

Now I have something better than the flesh and the letter of of Ten Commandments.

I am one with Christ in spirit.

The Holy Spirit leads me in spirit and in truth.

I walk after the Spirit of Christ as a little child is led by a father who will not allow that child to turn out of the way they should go.

”For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” (Romans 8: 20-22)

The law was not made for a righteous man.

Believers are perfectly righteous in Christ Jesus our Lord.

His correction, his establishing, his building-up comes through the preaching of his glorious person and work, not through the Law of Moses.

His power and grace is so sovereign and so effectual that either you are under his grace, righteous in him, led of him and rejoice to say Amen; or you are yet in your sins and under the law.

”Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.” (Luke 11: 45)

The law of love makes us aware, and behaves thus in a manner consistent with the understanding that only Christ has the rightful power to chasten and correct.

We may, at times, have to rebuke and correct.

But the authority by which we do so is not in ourselves but the word of God.

The Authority who alone is able to work it effectually in the heart is Christ Jesus our Lord.

The best way to rebuke and chasten is by setting Christ before the erring brother or sister.

Let Us Go To The House Of The Lord

”I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.” | Psalm 122: 1

What defines a true house of the Lord?

”And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.” (Exodus 9: 16)

It is a house where the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ is declared – God, Man, Mediator, Savior!

”And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16: 15)

It is a house where the Word of Christ is declared – every word that has proceeded out of the mouth of God.

”Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14: 6)

It is a house where the Spirit of Christ dwells – in truth.

”Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?” (Job 26: 14)

It is a house where the glory of Christ dwells – in power.

”By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13: 35)

It is a house where the people of Christ dwell – in love.

”And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” (Colossians 3: 10-11)

It is a house where Christ is ALL and in all.

That is a house that all of God’s people are glad to go to.

May that be THIS house today!

Why Are You Here?

”To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” | 1 Peter 2: 4-5

Why have you come to the house of the Lord this morning?

Is it to be seen of men so people will know how pious you are?

Have you come to fulfil a social need to see friends?

Have you come because you feel better going through some religious ceremony?

”Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.” (Acts 10: 33)

I pray we have come with the same heartfelt need that Cornelius had in Acts 10 when he said, “Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.”

It very well could be that God will speak to us if we have come needing to hear a word from Him.

God Shall Be With You

“And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers.” | Genesis 48: 21

Good old Jacob could no longer be with Joseph, for his hour had come to die, but he left his son without anxiety, for he said with confidence, “God shall be with you.”

When our dearest relations or our most helpful friends are called home by death, we must console ourselves with the reflection that the Lord has not departed from us but lives for us and abides with us forever.

If God be with us, we are in ennobling company, even though we are poor and despised.

If God be with us, we have all-sufficient strength, for nothing can be too hard for the Lord.

If God be with us, we are always safe, for none can harm those who walk under His shadow.

Oh, what a joy we have here!

Not only is God with us, but He will be with us.

With us as individuals; with us as families; with us as churches.

Is not the very name of Jesus, Immanuel – God with us?

Is not this the best of all, that God is with us?

Let us be bravely diligent and joyously hopeful.

Our cause must prosper, the truth must win, for the Lord is with those who are with Him.

All this day may this sweet word be enjoyed by every believer who turns to ‘faith’s checkbook.’

No greater happiness is possible.

Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder

“For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.” | Hebrews 4: 2-3

The apostle Paul told all of the brethren of the church in Philippi: “I have you in my heart”… because “Ye are all partakers with me of grace” (Philippians 1: 7)

I feel the exact same way toward all the brethren of the church in Kingsport.

In the same way that all of God’s chosen people long to be with Christ, God’s people love to be with those who are in Christ, and love Christ, and bow the knee to Christ.

When we have even brief moments of separation it causes us to realize how much we desire being together.

May the Lord God make that desire to grow.

May our love for Christ grow; and may our love for each other grow.

Because of the blood of our Savior, we are brethren – brothers and sisters together in Him.

And I want each one of you to know that I sincerely love you, I thank the Lord for you, and I greatly desire to see you again soon.

Being made to be “partakers of grace together,” “I have you in my heart.”

May Christ be in all of our hearts today, and may we be in His.

The Family Of God

“But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.” | Isaiah 43: 1

All those adopted into God’s family should cultivate a continual care and concern for each family member.

How can we do this?

Look at what the Scriptures say:

“Care one for another.” (1 Corinthians 12: 25)

“Love one another.” (John 13: 34)

“Pray for one another.” (James 5: 16)

“Comfort one another.” (1 Thessalonians 4: 18)

“Admonish one another.” (Romans 15: 14)

“Edify one another.” (1 Thessalonians 5: 11)

“Be at peace with one another.” (Mark 9: 50)

“Forgive one another.” (Ephesians 4: 32)

A Believer’s Attitude Toward Sin

”For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.” | Romans 7: 19-21

  1. He knows and rejoices that all of his sin and sins are pardoned, paid for, and put away by the sacrifice of Christ the Lord.
  2. He condemns sin in himself!

While sin does not reign it does remain in the believer, but he does not excuse or justify it.

He grieves over it and daily confesses his sins before God.

He hates a bad attitude as much as evil actions.

He judges his motives as well as his manner by the holiness of Christ; and, when he finds iniquity in himself, he despises it and judges himself. “O wretched man that I am!”

  1. He forgives sin in others!

He does not forgive himself — only God can do that — but he is quick to pity, have mercy upon, and forgive others.

Not to be able to forgive is to forfeit the right to ask forgiveness.

  1. He longs to be free from all sin and to be perfectly conformed to the image of Christ.

While he rejoices in Christ, is content with his lot, and finds joy in the fellowship of Christ’s Church, he will only be satisfied when he awakes in the likeness of Christ!

Constrained By Love

”For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead” | 2 Corinthians 5: 14

Why do you folks read the Bible, pray for one another, attend worship services and support the preaching of the gospel so faithfully and generously?

Why do you help one another, comfort one another, and encourage one another?

Why do you share your blessings, work at the church, seek the well-being and happiness of others, and invite others to your homes and tables?

I CAN ANSWER FOR YOU!

All believers in the Lord Jesus are under the SWEETEST and STRONGEST constraint to do what they do; they are motivated by the LOVE OF CHRIST; His love for them and their love for Him! “We love him, because he first loved us.” (1 John 4: 19)

“But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.” (Hebrews 9: 11-12)

It is not fear of hell, desire for reward, nor concern for acceptance that excites us to duty, devotion, and works of faith, but Christ’s eternal love which led Him to redeem us by His life and death.
