The Necessity and Importance of the Gospel

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3: 13,14)

Brethren, as we leave one year behind us and enter in to another year ahead of us, let us (now more than we ever have before) press the necessity and importance of the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Let’s press the necessity and importance of hearing, believing, and gathering together in worship.

Let’s press it to ourselves, our children, our parents, our siblings, our friends and our acquaintances.

It is truly the one thing that is needful.

With another year gone, it only means that time is running out.

Let’s redeem it!

While there is still breath in us, our responsibility in this life on earth is to glorify and praise our Redeemer and King; and to tell all who will listen how great things He has done for us!

Our God said that it has pleased Him to use the means of preaching His accomplishment on the cross to call His chosen people from darkness to light.

So, while it is still today, let’s witness His glorious victory with all of our ability.

  • When we feel tired, let’s encourage each other.
  • When we feel weak, let’s strengthen each other.
  • When we feel lost, let’s point each other back to Christ.

Let’s not put any stock in last year’s faith or faithfulness.

Today is the day of salvation for ALL of us.

May God, for Christ’s sake, give us more fervency than we had last year.

May God give us more heart for Christ and the things concerning Him than we had last year.

May God give us a deeper need; a more urgent cry; and may He cause us to see His Word to not only be true, but LIFE!

Lord, show us the Mark!

Reveal the Prize!

Cause us to reach forth!

Press us and we’ll be pressed!

Stewardship

”As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” | 1 Peter 4: 10

Thank God that we have the privilege of being personally and vitally involved in the lives and ministry of so many pastors, churches, and missionaries.

They are the servants of our Lord; and it is our blessed privilege to pray for them, encourage them, and help them in every way that we can.

“Let us not be weary in well-doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6: 9)

Let us not look so much on our own things as on the things of others.

The best way I know of receiving God’s blessings is to give them away; and the surest way to keep God’s mercies flowing into your silo is to have the feed door always open, for God has appointed no man nor church to be his bankers, only his stewards.

“Lord, teach me your word and I’ll teach others. Reveal your gospel to me and I’ll preach it to all who will listen. Shed abroad your love in my heart and I will love others. Forgive me as I forgive. Entrust me with gifts and I will give to those who have need. Help me, by thy grace, to be a channel of blessings and not a dead sea.”

May I ask a question?

Who is on your mind and heart today?

Or even this week?

Whom have you encouraged?

Whose burden have you lifted?

For whom have you prayed?

For whom have you called?

For whom have you written?

What contribution have you made to the furtherance of the gospel?

To those who reach out, I encourage you to continue to do so; and, to those who have not yet discovered the joy of giving and helping, I say, “It is His way!”

Grow In Grace

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” | 2 Peter 3:18

The apostle’s exhortation to us as God’s people who have been called by faith to believe on Christ is, “grow in grace.” When God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the doctrine of grace.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” | Ephesians 2: 8-9

They grow in the object of grace – which is Christ Himself! “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” | 2 Timothy 1: 9

“Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” | 2 Timothy 2: 1

And when God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the practice of grace.

Psalm 111: 4 says, “…the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.” And all who “grow in grace” say, “As He is, I desire to be.” True growth in grace says with David, “I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with THY likeness.” | Psalm 17: 15

The doctrine!

The object!

The practice!

“Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen. | 2 Peter 3: 17,18

Exhortation to Steadfastness

For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and [for] them at Laodicea, and [for] as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ. As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, [so] walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. | Colossians 2: 1-12

Speaking The Truth In Love

I wonder if when we preach or teach or witness to others, does the love of Christ and love for sinners come through in our words and in our countenance?

I am interested to know if our hearers detect from our presentation of the Gospel of sovereign grace (whether in sermon or articles) the love, compassion, and pity we should feel; or do we come across as harsh, bitter, and with a critical spirit? Do we tend to take our disappointments in some and our conflicts with others into the pulpit, or classroom, or personal discussions, and tear into everybody?

This is not the way of Christ.

James said, “The wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” It was His love that chose us, gave us repentance, and led us to faith; and if any other sinner is brought from darkness, death, and error to light, life, and truth, it will be by and through the love and grace of Christ.

We are quick to say that the whip of the law will not make a man righteous, but neither will the whip of doctrine make a man a believer.

The Comfort Of Christ

“Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” | 1 Thessalonians 4: 18

The comfort that our God has given to us within the pages of His Word is indescribable.

For every low and broken child of God who needs it, there is an endless supply of mercy in the blood of Christ; an endless supply of grace in the gift of Christ; an endless supply of righteousness in the work of Christ; an endless supply of satisfaction in the offering of Christ; and an endless supply of appeasement in the intercession of Christ.

The more that we see of our sin, the more comfort we find in the Savior of sinners.

The more we see of our insufficiency, the more comfort we find in His ALL sufficiency.

The more we see of our need, the more comfort we find in the fullness of His supply.

When we’re sad, He cheers us. When we’re empty, He fills us. When we’re far, He draws us back near to Him.

Oh, the comfort that we have in the Holy Word that tells us of our God and Savior, Redeemer and Friend, Christ Jesus our Lord. Brethren, let’s comfort one another with these words.
