The Glory In Trials

”Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” | Romans 5: 1-5

Faith believes God’s promise to perform all that is necessary to justify us and make us the righteousness of God.

That is what Abraham believed.

How does it say Abraham gave glory to God?

He staggered not at God’s promise through unbelief.

But was fully persuaded — that is what faith is – being fully persuaded.

Fully persuaded that what?

That what God promises, God is able also to perform.

God promised Abraham righteousness by the work Christ Jesus the Son of God would perform on Abraham’s behalf – and Abraham believed God’s promise, fully persuaded he was able to perform it.

Through faith, God imputed — charged or laid to his account – the very righteousness God requires.

”Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” (1 Peter 1:3)

When you do not believe that God is able to perform all the work necessary to justify you and bring you to himself, without you helping him, then you are in a constant warfare against God.

God is your enemy.

You fight to deny the very being and perfections of God.

You fight to deny that justification is accomplished by Christ.

Faith believes that my peace with God is by Christ.

Faith also believes that it is by Christ that I continue in the perpetual care of God’s unchanging favor – His grace.

This word stand, means, that true God-given faith shall endure because God’s grace in Christ Jesus continually makes us to stand.

”As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.” (Psalm 17: 15)

We can rather glory in tribulations, in our infirmities, in suffering, for when I am weakest that is when I behold the more that I shall be saved by his life.

Return To Thy Rest, O My Soul

“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” | Psalm 23: 2-3

Some believers are troubled because they cannot always and at all times feel the joy and comfort set forth in Psalm 23.

We should remember that, though David lived long and wrote much, he wrote only one twenty-third Psalm.

There are other psalms; psalms of conviction, praise, prayer, seeking, and mourning. In fact, even this Psalm closes with our walk through the valley of death.

This valley of death is our entire journey through life.

The fall of Adam put the stamp of death on everything and everyone.

But we are walking through.

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23: 4)

It is not our home, and it is a valley of the SHADOW of death.

Christ has removed the substance and sting of death for us.

The shadow of a dog can’t hurt; the shadow of a gun can’t kill.

‘I will fear no evil’

He does not say: ‘there will be no evil’; but, because He is with me, I don’t FEAR the evil.

Fundamentals Of Grace

”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” | John 1: 1-2

Four things comfort the child of God in trials and afflictions:

  1. ”That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.” (1 Thessalonians 3: 3)

We can trust the God who appoints them.

  1. ”For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” (Psalm 103: 14)

We can trust that He knows our frame.

  1. ”And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8: 28)

We can trust that good will always be waiting at the end of the trial.

  1. ”To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.” (1 Thessalonians 3: 13)

We can trust that one day soon He will “…stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.”

The Trial Of Your Faith

”That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” | 1 Peter 1: 7

Trials of sickness, disease, and even death cannot produce faith or take it away; rather they manifest it, prove it, and glorify the God who gave and sustained it.

Absolute Control, Absolute Comfort

”Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.” | 2 Corinthians 1: 3-5

God does not comfort us in our sorrow to make us feel comfortable, but “…that we may be able to comfort them which are in trouble, by the same comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” (2 Corinthians 1: 4)

Comfort In Trouble

”So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” | Romans 1: 15-17

Being a believer in Jesus Christ and resting in His good providence does not exempt us from trouble, trial, sorrow and heartache in this life.

Our Lord said, “In this world you shall have tribulation.” “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16: 33)

But here is our comfort and help, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46: 1)

Our blessed Lord said, “Come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4: 16)

Our gracious God has promised wisdom to understand the trial “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1: 5)

Grace to endure and bear the trial “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12: 9)

Faith to trust and believe God through the trial “And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God” (Romans 4: 19-20)

Peace to rest in His purpose, knowing that this trial works to our eternal good. (Romans 8: 28-35)

Hope to rejoice in our Lord and Saviour, Who said, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee” “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13: 5)

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4: 19)

Surely, we must conclude that we are needy and sinful creatures and that the Lord Jesus Christ is our only resource of help and hope!

Comfort In Trouble

”Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” | Jeremiah 17: 5-8
