Will God Save A True Sinner?

”And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” | John 6: 40

Christ will never have finished his work upon believers till he has raised their bodies from the grave and glorified them like his own resurrected body.

He will never cease from the work which he has commenced on any one of his people till he has laid the top stone in the glorious perfections of heaven; and this truth is the joy of our hearts even now.

God’s Dealings With Sinners

”Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;” | Titus 2: 12

In vain do we claim to be saved if the world still rules our heart.

Divine grace not only delivers from the wrath to come, but even now effectually “teaches” its recipients to deny “all ungodliness and worldly lust, that we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.”

Our Lord says, “Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”

That is, to turn away from all that stands in competition (for our affections) with the Lord Jesus, he cannot become a Christian.

Two Important Evidences

”Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.” | 1 John 5: 1

Two important truths are obvious in this verse.

First, the only way anyone can believe on Christ the Savior is to be born again with a new nature. Our old nature can never believe on Christ or love Christ. The only thing the new nature can do is believe and love Christ.

Second, anyone who is born again loves God and loves other believers. A child of God loves the other children of God. The family of God loves the family of God.

Where faith in Christ and love for believers is lacking, there is no evidence of the new birth.

The Blood

”But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” | 1 Corinthians 1: 23-25

The Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed blood atonement.

He said the blood has been shed.

It was God’s blood…

…holy blood,

…precious blood,

…it was divinely sent blood,

…saving blood,

…redeeming blood.

The blood atonement means the life laid down, it means the offering up of the Lord of glory!

And He said this was the only basis on which a Holy God could deal with sinful men.

Not upon your goodness, but upon the basis of His life laid down.

That’s how God deals with sinners.

The One Thing Man Will Do

“Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them” | Luke 15: 1-2

While the self-righteous Pharisees and Scribes withdrew from the Lord Jesus Christ and then harshly criticized Him, many publicans and sinners drew near to hear Him.

“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6: 44)

What a blessing from the Lord to have a willingness to draw near to Him and then to have ears to actually hear a word from Him. “Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.” (Acts 10: 33)

His words are words of life. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” (John 5: 24)

His words are words of salvation. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1: 16)

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4: 12)

The worst thing the Pharisees and scribes said of the Lord, “This man recieveth sinners, and eateth with them;” is the best thing any sinner could hear.

It is not sin that keeps a man from hearing the good news of the gospel of Christ, it is his presumed righteousness he is going about to establish by his religious deeds. “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” (Romans 10: 1-4)

No man will ever come to Christ while he is resting in the deeds of the law for salvation. “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3: 19-20)

“For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.” (John 5: 21)

It is only by the almighty power of His sovereign grace that will effectually quicken us and make us alive in Christ that will cause us to draw near to Him, to hear Him and to believe Him. “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.” (1 John 5: 1)

This Man receives sinners!

“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;” (Ephesians 2: 1)

What a miracle of amazing grace.

Christ Is The Savior Of Sinners

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” | 1 Timothy 1: 15

It is because sinners are the only people who need saving.

If you are a sinner come to Christ for Christ is the Savior of sinners.

A High God For Low Sinners

”Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.” | Psalm 138: 6-8

As a criminal condemned, convicted and sentenced, I walked steadily through the darkness, drawing ever nearer the time and place of execution. I knew well that I was guilty and that I justly deserved what lay ahead. My name was synonymous with lawlessness, rebellion and guilt. I didn’t have a single argument in my defense. There was not one thing I could do.

I had already abandoned all hope in myself.

But as I drew near the executioner, a man approached out of the shadows, took me by the shoulders and interrupted my trek toward death. “Just trust me and I will take your place, setting you free from all guilt.” ‘But I have so disrespected, dishonored and despised the law, were I to be freed, it would only be temporary, for my very name is Guilt. I would soon be apprehended and brought again to this place of approaching doom.’

“But I have honored and magnified the law,” he said, “you may take my name and I will take yours, thus you will be reckoned righteous and I guilty.” ‘But, Sir, that would necessitate your death. The law would pursue, arrest and execute you.’ “I’m willing,” he said, “to die in your place.”

‘But, Sir, why would you sacrifice yourself for me? You are innocent and I am guilty.’

“Though you haven’t known me, I have known and loved you for a long time, and came here for this purpose.”

Now I am free because he bore the penalty for my guilt.

Now I live because he died!

And though I am personally guilty, in the name of my friend, my substitute, the judge accepts me and favors me. Needless to say, I live under the influence of my substitute’s love and try to honor his name. To me, his name is above every name! Each new day of life, every joyful thought of the future and my present peace with the judge is all because of him. He is my life, my peace and my happiness!

My friends, this story illustrates the gospel of Christ, the gospel that is all of grace.

It is often suggested that such a gospel leaves men to live after the flesh, totally unchanged.

But I propose that any who profess commitment to this gospel, yet remain unchanged, have merely acknowledged the story, but never personally met the Redeemer!

The Difference In: No Faith; Weak Faith; And Strong Faith.

“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.” | Luke 17: 5

When a person has no faith at all, he looks to his own flesh for all of his confidence before God.

He believes that God will be satisfied with him by what he sees in himself – his actions, his words, and his thoughts.

When a person has weak faith, he looks to himself for a little bit of confidence before God.

He knows that he will never be able to satisfy God outside of the blood of Christ, but something in him still thinks that he must produce good actions, good words, and good thoughts along with Christ’s blood before God will accept him.

When a person is strong in faith, he does not look to himself at all.

He knows that he can have absolutely no confidence in his flesh. When it comes to God accepting him, all of his hope is in Christ’s actions, Christ’s words, and Christ’s thoughts.

He firmly believes that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief!” And “He is made unto (me) wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.”

Christ is all I need!

In summary…

No faith – has all confidence in the flesh.

Weak faith – has a little confidence in the flesh.

Strong faith – has NO confidence in the flesh at all!

The Heir(s) Of God

”And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.” | Genesis 25: 5

There are many places in the book of Genesis where Isaac is typical of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Isaac was the promised seed. “And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.” (Genesis 21: 12)

Isaac voluntarily laid upon the altar as a sacrifice in total obedience to his father. “” (Genesis 22: 9)

It was Isaac that had his bride sought out by his father and drawn to him through the word of his father’s servant. “But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.” (Genesis 24: 4)

It is in our text that Isaac, as the sole heir of Abraham, is given all that his father had. What a glorious picture of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Promised Seed, the Substitute and the Sacrifice for sin, that heavenly Bridegroom who is the heir of all that belongs to God His Father.

However, this verse makes us aware of another blessed fact and truth that may not at first be seen.

Rebekah, the sought-out bride of Isaac, being his wife, also shared in father Abraham’s inheritance. She is a beautiful picture of the believer, the chosen bride, who is made a joint-heir with Christ. All the wealth, comfort and pleasure that Isaac enjoyed as Abraham’s heir, Rebekah also enjoyed as Isaac’s wife. Doesn’t that blessed thought and truth make the apostle Paul’s words “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” (Romans 8: 17) even more glorious to God’s people?

Truly, all that God the Father has given to His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, has also been given to the elect of God who were chosen to be His bride before the foundation of the world. All that is God’s belongs to Christ. All that is Christ’s belongs to His Bride. The children of God are heirs of God, because they are joint-heirs with Christ, and they are joint-heirs with Christ because they are the children of God.

Everything that God is going to do for His people, He is going to do through His Son, His Heir, our Lord, Savior and heavenly Husband, Jesus Christ.

Cause Of Contention

”And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the Word of God. And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.” | Acts 11: 1-3

When God saves sinners it is a time of great rejoicing.

Yet, here the apostle Peter stands before his own brethren who contended with him because he went in to uncircumcised Gentiles and ate meat which had been forbidden in God’s law, “they that were of the circumcision contended with him”. They had the Lord’s word that God has an elect people among the Gentiles. The prophets clearly declared it.

The Lord told Abraham: “And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.” (Genesis 22: 18)

The Lord gave his word concerning Christ’s salvation of his elect among the Gentiles: “And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.” (Isaiah 49: 6)

Again we find the word of the Lord saying: “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.” (Psalm 22: 27)

Moreover, the Lord Jesus Christ had, in person, given clear instruction to the saints to preach to the Gentiles: “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matthew 28: 18-19) Before his ascension the Lord told his disciples: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”. (Acts 1: 8)

Still, they contended with Peter for going in to uncircumcised Gentiles and eating meat which had been forbidden in the law which God gave.

This is the sad result of what happens if we turn from Christ to the law.

They ceased to hear the Lord and looked back to the law he gave to shut sinners up to him.

As a result they made no mention of the fact that Cornelius and his household received Christ, the word of God. They did not rejoice in God’s grace; they did not rejoice in the fact that Christ was exalted; they did not rejoice in the fact that sinners were saved; they could find no joy in God and his grace because their minds were fixed in another direction. Their minds were consumed with Peter and the fact that he ate unclean animals forbidden by the law.

All they could see was Peter and the Law.

This is a good example of what the apostle Paul meant when he declared why he refused for Titus to be circumcised. “To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.” (Galatians 2: 5)

Every law of God, yes, every word of God is given to turn his elect people to his Son whom he has chosen to have the preeminence in all things.

God’s law declares man’s utter inability to keep it and Christ the Righteousness of God.

The law of the clean and unclean animals declares plainly that it is the LORD who is the sinner’s holiness who makes him the very cleanness of God.

Every word of reproof and exhortation the Holy Spirit moved the apostles to write, which the Spirit has preserved through the ages for the believer, is to shut our mouths from boasting of our walk and to point us to the faithfulness of Christ in whom believers are complete.
