The Only Man Who Can Plead For Us

”He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” | Romans 8: 32-34

We should always read the Old Testament with a desire to find something in it about Jesus Christ.

We study this portion of the Bible with little profit, if we can see nothing in it but Moses, and David, and Samuel, and the Prophets.

Let us search the books of the Old Testament more closely.

It was said by Him whose words can never pass away, “These are they which testify of Me”.

What A Contrast Between “I AM” And “I Am A Worm!”

”But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.” | Psalm 22: 6

This verse is a miracle in language.

How could the Lord of glory be brought to such abasement as to be not only lower than the angels, but even lower than men.

”My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.” (Psalm 22: 1-2)

What a contrast between “I AM” and “I am a worm!” yet such a double nature was found in the person of our Lord Jesus when bleeding upon the tree.

”But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22: 3)

He felt himself to be comparable to a helpless, powerless, down trodden worm, passive while crushed, and unnoticed and despised by those who trod upon him.

”Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.” (Psalm 22: 4)

He selects the weakest of creatures, which is all flesh; and becomes, when trodden upon, writhing, quivering flesh, utterly devoid of any might except strength to suffer.

”They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.” (Psalm 22: 5)

This was a true likeness of himself when his body and soul had become a mass of misery — the very essence of agony – in the dying pangs of crucifixion.

”But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.” (Psalm 22: 6)

Man by nature is but a worm; but our Lord puts himself even beneath man, on account of the scorn that was heaped upon him and the weakness which he felt, and therefore he adds, “and no man.”

”All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.” (Psalm 22: 7-8)

The privileges and blessings which belonged to the fathers he could not obtain while deserted by God, and common acts of humanity were not allowed him, for he was rejected of men; he was outlawed from the society of earth, and shut out from the smile of heaven.

How utterly did the Saviour empty himself of all glory, and become of no reputation for our sakes!

Why Are You Here?

”To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” | 1 Peter 2: 4-5

Why have you come to the house of the Lord this morning?

Is it to be seen of men so people will know how pious you are?

Have you come to fulfil a social need to see friends?

Have you come because you feel better going through some religious ceremony?

”Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.” (Acts 10: 33)

I pray we have come with the same heartfelt need that Cornelius had in Acts 10 when he said, “Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.”

It very well could be that God will speak to us if we have come needing to hear a word from Him.

Who Gets The Glory?

”And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.” | 2 Kings 2: 14

If you wish to know if the gospel you are hearing preached is the gospel of God, ask yourself this question, ‘Who gets the glory?’

If you wish to know whether your religious experience is of the flesh or of the Lord, ask yourself the same thing, ‘Who gets the glory?’

Also, examine all your gifts, works, and missionary efforts by the same rule, ‘Who gets the glory?’

”That no flesh should glory in his presence… That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1: 29, 31)

God will not share His glory!

That which is of God, from God, and for God’s glory will be blessed with His presence and power.

Uphold Me According Unto Thy Word

”Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.” | Psalm 119: 116

A man would be ashamed of his hope if it turned out that it was not based upon a sure foundation.

The Lord taught that there will be many that will learn too late that they built their hope on their own works which proved to be as a house built on sand.

When the storm came that house fell.

That will never be true of a child of God who built his hope on Jesus Christ.

They will never be ashamed that they put their trust in Christ.

They will never have a reason to be.

The hope of believers rests on the sure foundation of the grace of God that is in Christ Jesus.

Since it is a good hope through grace, and an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast, we can be certain that those with such a hope will never be ashamed.

A Sermon For Me

“Unto you that believe, He is precious” | 1 Peter 2: 7

Believers receive Christ, rejoice in Christ and, to them He is precious.

His obedience is our righteousness.

His blood is our atonement.

His prayers are our intercession.

His reign is our glory.

His coming is our hope.

Christ is all and in all.

An Adversaries Scheme To Destroy

“And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king’s laws: therefore it is not for the king’s profit to suffer them. If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.” | Esther 3: 8-9

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PREACH…

  1. That man is both totally and partially depraved.

“I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 89: 1)

  1. That election is both conditional and unconditional.

“For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.” (Psalm 89: 2)

  1. That regenerating grace is both resistible and irresistible.
  2. That redemption is both limited and unlimited.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations.” (Psalm 89: 3-4)

  1. That perseverance is both certain and uncertain.

And He That Was Dead Came Forth

”And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.” | John 11: 43-44

When the Lord Jesus stood before the tomb of His beloved friend Lazarus, (who had been dead four days) did He cry, “Lazarus, I have made life possible for you, will you choose to accept it?”

How absurd!

Lazarus was dead; he could make no choice or decision, nor could he exert his own will.

So, when did Lazarus receive life?

Was it when he came forth, and because he came forth or was life given to him before he came forth?

The answer should be obvious!

Perfection in Christ!

“Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.” | Colossians 1: 28-29

Perfect, complete, without blemish, holy, blameless, spotless; these are just a few of the words the Scriptures use to describe Gods saints.

We do not feel that we are any of these things in ourselves, but this is what God says about us.

Do we believe what we see in ourselves or what God says about us?

God describes us with these glorious words because of what our Lord Jesus Christ accomplished for us by His holy sinless life and His sacrificial death for us on the cross.

God’s word describes us as what we are in Christ.

Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift.

Preaching

”And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.” | 1 Corinthians 2: 3

C. H. Spurgeon is called by many “The Prince of Preachers”.

Spurgeon wrote, “For many years my own preaching was exceedingly painful to me, because of the fear and trembling which beset me before entering the pulpit. Often, the dread of facing my hearers has been overwhelming.

“I wrote to my dear grandfather, who was a minister of God for many years, and told him of the overwhelming mental emotions, sickness of body, and trembling fears which gripped my heart when I preached the Word of God.”

The old gentleman wrote back, “My son, I have been preaching the gospel of Christ sixty years, and I still feel the same trembling fears that you feel. Be content to have it so. When these emotions go away, your strength will also be gone. When you are able to preach the gospel and think nothing of it, the people will think nothing of it, and God will do nothing with it.”
