The Heir(s) Of God

”And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.” | Genesis 25: 5

There are many places in the book of Genesis where Isaac is typical of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Isaac was the promised seed. “And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.” (Genesis 21: 12)

Isaac voluntarily laid upon the altar as a sacrifice in total obedience to his father. “” (Genesis 22: 9)

It was Isaac that had his bride sought out by his father and drawn to him through the word of his father’s servant. “But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.” (Genesis 24: 4)

It is in our text that Isaac, as the sole heir of Abraham, is given all that his father had. What a glorious picture of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Promised Seed, the Substitute and the Sacrifice for sin, that heavenly Bridegroom who is the heir of all that belongs to God His Father.

However, this verse makes us aware of another blessed fact and truth that may not at first be seen.

Rebekah, the sought-out bride of Isaac, being his wife, also shared in father Abraham’s inheritance. She is a beautiful picture of the believer, the chosen bride, who is made a joint-heir with Christ. All the wealth, comfort and pleasure that Isaac enjoyed as Abraham’s heir, Rebekah also enjoyed as Isaac’s wife. Doesn’t that blessed thought and truth make the apostle Paul’s words “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” (Romans 8: 17) even more glorious to God’s people?

Truly, all that God the Father has given to His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, has also been given to the elect of God who were chosen to be His bride before the foundation of the world. All that is God’s belongs to Christ. All that is Christ’s belongs to His Bride. The children of God are heirs of God, because they are joint-heirs with Christ, and they are joint-heirs with Christ because they are the children of God.

Everything that God is going to do for His people, He is going to do through His Son, His Heir, our Lord, Savior and heavenly Husband, Jesus Christ.

In Christ

“They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?” | John 8: 4-5

Often someone asks what “position” you hold on a particular doctrine, such as particular redemption, or the depravity of man.

But the word of God never tells us to come to a position, but to a person, to Christ Jesus the Lord.

He himself said, “Come unto me.” Again, “All that the Father gives me shall come unto me, no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” The scriptures speak of believers being “in Christ” in several places. This is the place I want to be found – In Christ. This is the only place where a sinner can have a secure position from sin, death, hell, and the judgment and wrath of God.

When a sinner comes to Christ, trusts Christ and learns that he was chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world, then he has the most blessed position a poor sinner can have.

Justified!

Accepted!

Righteous!

Where?

Before God, who is holy and inhabits eternity.

Before Him who knows our thoughts afar off.

Before Him who knows the heart.

“Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.”

How?

“It is Christ that died, yea rather is risen again, who sitteth at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” (Romans 8: 33-34)

Our Only Refuge

”He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.” | Psalm 62: 6-7

We must make Christ the paramount object of our soul’s pursuit or our spiritual life will decline.

It was Christ yesterday, and it must be Christ today, and Christ forever.

It will not do to feed partly on Christ and partly on other things.

As in the matter of life, it is Christ alone; so in the matter of living, it must be Christ alone.

“I’m Not Glad I Sinned, But I’m Glad I’m A Sinner.”

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

“Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”

A Believer’s Peace

”Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” | Philippians 4: 4-7

Where does a believer find real and genuine peace?

On what foundation can we rest and say in truth, “It is well with my soul?”

I’ll tell you, it lies in this; that we are justified by faith and not by works.

Christ Jesus stood in my stead before God. I was guilty with nothing to pay, doomed to hell; and Christ took my place! He died for me! How can I perish? How can I be punished for sins which have already been laid on Christ and for which He has suffered?

God demands of me that I keep His holy law perfectly.

I cannot do it.

But Christ has kept it for me.

He kept it, magnified it, made it honorable in my flesh. What more can God demand of me? I am washed in the blood of Christ Jesus; I am risen and seated at His right hand in Christ Jesus.

You may ask, “How is all this yours?”

I reply, “By the grace of God, through the merits of Christ, revealed by the Spirit of God THROUGH FAITH!”

God said, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.”

I do believe, I sincerely believe in Christ; therefore, I have eternal life.

Preservation Or Perseverance?

”Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” | 1 Peter 1: 23-25

There has been some discussion among Calvinists whether the letter “P” in the acronym “TULIP” should be “preservation” or “persevering.”

Some say that the word “persevering” leads folks to think that salvation is something that the sinner does. It is!

“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. (Matthew 24: 13)

The only reason a child of God “perseveres” is because God Almighty preserves them. “The salvation of the righteous is of the Lord.” (Psalm 37: 39)

In 1 Peter 1: 5, the apostle speaking of God’s elect wrote, “Who are kept by the power of God.” That’s preservation!

But the next two words of the text read, “through faith.” That is persevering!

God preserves and keeps us by His power, but it is through faith that we persevere unto salvation.

In Jeremiah chapter 32: 40, God says, “And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good…” That is preservation. But the next line says, “But I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.” And that is persevering.

In John chapter 10 the Lord Jesus, our great Shepherd made several statements about preservation and persevering.

He said, “I know my sheep,” That is preservation.

“They follow me,” That is persevering.

Christ said, “I lay down my life for the sheep.” That is preservation.

“A stranger they will not follow.” That is persevering.

Our Lord Jesus said in John chapter 6, verse 37, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; (Preservation) and him that cometh to me (Persevering) I will in no wise cast out. (Preservation and persevering)

So, it really doesn’t matter to God’s people whether you use the word “preservation” or “perseverance.”

For unless God preserves us, we will never persevere!

Behold The Lamb of God!

“Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.” | John 1: 35-39

The salvation of the Church doth not spring from any holiness wrought in us, but from the work of CHRIST wrought for us.

Not in our brokenness of heart, but in Christ’s bruised and broken body on the tree.

Rejoicing In Hope

”For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” | Romans 5: 6-11

THE Word of God plainly, clearly, and thoroughly teaches that man by nature is contrary and opposed to God in every way.

For example, God by nature is infinitely and immutably holy – man by nature is unchangeably and incurably sin; God is light – man by nature is darkness; God is truth – man’s whole life by nature, without God, is a lie; God is infinitely good – man by nature is inherently and unchangeably bad.

In a word, man is a natural born enemy of God. In fact, the natural man’s mind is enmity against God – not merely at enmity, but enmity itself! (Romans 8: 5-7) Thus men by nature love darkness and deception rather than God’s precious Word. (John 3: 19) Therefore man’s greatest need is to be reconciled to God.

It is a continual burden on my heart that so many preachers of our day, rather than preaching God as He is to sinners as they are, (Sinners in the hands of an angry God) are preaching a god who is palatable, agreeable, suits the taste of fallen, human nature, a god whose chief attribute is love rather than holiness, a god who loves everybody the same, who gave His Son as a sacrifice for the sins of all mankind, a god who is trying to save all men.

These preachers, for personal advantage and gain, (the good opinion of men, and numbers) are preaching a false god, a false gospel, and thus giving their hearers a false hope. Their disciples have never been brought to bow before the true God as mercy seekers.

How could they?

They have never heard of the true God of the Bible. How can they ever be reconciled to God?

Dear souls, God can only be worshiped by beggars, mercy seekers, before His sovereign throne of glory and grace.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, “Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth laborers into His harvest.” (Matthew 9: 38)

Trust

”Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” | Hebrews 6: 1-2

“Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus”

Trust is a wonderful thing, and Sweet is a good word to describe it.

Whether between husband and wife, parents and children, friends, or whoever… trust is sweet!

The word implies faith, confidence, and reliance, but that is not all.

There is also a wonderful rest and repose in trust; a freedom from doubts, suspicions, anxieties, and fearful apprehensions.

Trust is calm, peaceful and assured. “Tis so sweet” when guilty sinners come to “trust in Jesus.”

The Church Belongs To Christ

“Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.” | Song of Solomon 8: 11

While the church is in this world she is with Christ and Christ is with her, and she is safe. All is well!

Sometimes our doubting hearts become fearful about the welfare and safety of the Lord’s church.

But our fears are ill-founded.

The church belongs to Christ.

He loved her, chose her, and redeemed her.

She is in His hands.

He will defend her, protect her, and perfect her.

The church of Christ and the cause of Christ are safe.
