Cast All On Christ

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” | John 15:13

The most difficult thing for any of us to do is to TOTALLY and COMPLETELY trust and rest in our blessed Lord Jesus to redeem us, sanctify us, and make us accepted of the Father.

We are so prone to self-righteousness and works that we have a constant battle trying to remember that “man at his BEST STATE is altogether vanity” but also that, in his WEAKEST MOMENTS, is no less loved and accepted if he is in Christ.

As Brother Don Fortner said, “My relationship with the eternal God (in Christ) does in great measure determine what I do. But what I do (good or bad) in no way determines my relationship with the eternal God.” Actually, “In my flesh dwelleth NO GOOD THING.”

It is in Christ that the Father is well-pleased; and only in Christ can He love, accept, and be pleased with me.

I did not come to Christ on the basis of my works, nor am I kept in Christ on the basis of my works!

I looked to Him THEN for ALL THINGS, and I look to Him NOW for ALL THINGS!

Any look within will serve only to discourage and depress me; but, looking to Christ, the author and finisher of my faith, will only encourage me, for He never changes. His gift of life and calling to grace is without change.

The command, “Look unto Me and be ye saved,” is not only the hope and strength of the seeking sinner, but it is the constant hope and strength of the believing sinner.

I know my sins, but I rejoice in his grace.

I know my weakness, but I rest in His strength.

I know my emptiness, but I am complete in Him.

“O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear” all because we do not cast our sins and our souls on Christ and LEAVE THEM THERE!

I Commend You To God

“And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified” | Acts 20: 32

As Paul departs from the elders from Ephesus he gives them this good and true word by inspiration of God. (2 Timothy 3: 16) It was not only good for those to hear in that day but also for us today. (Romans 10: 17)

What blessing to be given over to the total care and keeping of the Lord Jesus Christ; the good, great and chief Shepherd of the sheep. (Psalm 23: 1-4) We are truly and fully in His almighty hands, (John 10: 27-30) kept by His power, (1 Peter 1: 5) justified by His grace, (Romans 3: 24) redeemed by His blood (1 Peter 1: 18) and blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ. (Ephesians 1: 3)

But the apostle Paul also adds to that recommendation, “To the word of His grace;” this is the same as the gospel of His grace that is the power of God unto salvation, (Acts 20: 24; Romans 1: 16) who is also the God of all grace and glory. (1 Peter 5: 10)

And then Paul tells us what the word of His grace will do for the believer in Christ, “Which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance;” not puff us up with religious pride but rather build us up in faith, grace and love in Christ. Our Lord said, “Upon this rock, (foundation) I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Isaiah 28: 16; Matthew 16: 18)

The Lord Jesus Christ is our total and complete inheritance. (Romans 8: 17; Ephesians 1: 11; 1 Peter 1: 3)

These blessings of the gospel are sovereignly and exclusively given only to those that are sanctified in Christ; (1 Corinthians 1: 30) “Among all them which are sanctified.”

How are sinners sanctified?

Not by anything we do!

But rather upon the sacrifice of Christ for us, “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.” (Hebrews 10: 14)

How Sinful are We?

“Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” | Romans 3: 25-26

We can read the Scriptures which declare, “There is none good, no not one… every imagination of man’s heart is only evil continually… our righteousnesses are filthy rags… man at his best state is vanity;” but what makes this question difficult to answer is the fact that we have such little understanding of true holiness.

We compare ourselves with ourselves and arrive at a weak, perverted view of sin.

A man’s conception of sin is determined by his understanding of TRUE HOLINESS. I declare, without reservation, that a man will never come to an understanding of the exceeding sinfulness of sin until he sees the holiness and righteousness of the Lord God!

Job was an honest, upright, and righteous man in his own eyes until he saw the Lord; and then he cried, “I abhor myself.”

Isaiah put a “woe” on everyone else until he saw the Lord; and then he cried, “Woe is ME, I am undone.”

Until preachers begin to preach the true character of our God in His awesome holiness, justice, and righteousness, men will not be convicted of sin, righteousness, and judgement and will continue in their efforts to establish a righteousness of their own, denying the necessity of a REDEEMER, who alone can enable God to be both just and justifier.

It’s Simple

“If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.” | 2 Corinthians 11: 30

One of the old writers once said: “Do not look for that in the law which can only be found in the gospel; do not look for that in ourselves which is only to be found in Christ; do not look for that in the creature (i.e, man) which can only be found in the Creator; and do not look for that on earth which can only be found in Heaven.”

Christ Is All And In All

“Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” | Colossians 3: 11

There is only one thing that matters in our temporal life on this earth, and that one thing is a Person – Christ Jesus our Lord.

In the end, everything that we have accomplished will turn out to be emptiness, and everything that we have accumulated will vanish away.

But to leave this world holding on to Christ Himself, is to leave this world holding on to the fullness of eternity. In that day, everything will be nothing, and Christ will be ALL!

Lord, teach us to cling to the one thing needful.

THE BODY OF CHRIST

“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. | 1 Corinthians 12: 27

All of God’s elect make up the body of Christ, His church. (Matthew 16: 18; Ephesians 1: 3-6)

All who Christ Jesus redeemed with His precious blood, make up the body of Christ. (Acts 20: 28; 1 Peter 1: 18; Revelation 5: 9-12) All who are regenerated by God the Holy Spirit, make up the body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12: 13; Ephesians 2: 1-4; 1 Peter 1: 23) All who are made to believe the true gospel, make up the body of Christ. (John 5: 24; Galatians 3: 26)

Therefore, any earthly organization or religious cult that sets itself as the “body of christ” proclaiming they have authority to put sinners into Christ or remove them at their own discretion and power to wash away sin, is truly an abomination to Almighty God, a discredit to the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and totally contrary to the whole testimony of God.

Salvation, as it is taught from Genesis to Revelation is of the Lord; from election, to justification, to sanctification, to reconciliation, to regeneration and to glorification. (Romans 8: 28-30; 1 Corinthians 1: 30-31; 2 Timothy 1: 9: Titus 3: 5-7)

“Then sings my soul!”

“He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.” | Isaiah 42: 4

There is a beautiful song in our hymnal titled: “How Great Thou Art.”

The third verse of that song says, “And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in – that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin… Then sings my soul!”

Once salvation is revealed to a child of God, from that moment forward the soul of that child sings the glory and greatness of the God who saved him or her.

The body may break, but the soul will never stop singing!

The heart may ache, but the soul will never stop singing!

Everything about the physical, mental, and emotional state of the child may be silenced under the overwhelming weight and oppression of sin, but knowing what the blood of Christ has done for sinners will cause the soul of that child to never stop singing, “My Savior God, to Thee; How great Thou art, How great Thou art!”

Swift To Hear, Slow To Speak, Slow to Wrath

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” | James 1: 19

Throughout scripture, particularly Proverbs, the Lord tells us to be more ready to hear than speak. He tells us that a fool is known by his constant talk, while a wise man listens well, heeds counsel and rebuke, and ‘studieth to answer. Fact is, we have a lot to learn and don’t know much; and if any man thinketh he knoweth anything ( has all the answers) he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. So we need to do a lot less talking and a lot more listening.

Let every one of us be SWIFT TO HEAR. We don’t know everything and we won’t learn anything if we aren’t swift to hear. The ear and the mouth do not work together. When one is open the other is shut. The ear is best left open while the mouth is better left shut. If we are too busy talking we will miss something worth hearing. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Faith is not big talk, but good hearing. We have a lot to learn from God’s Word so we need to be swift to hear… ready and waiting, like a little child… eager to listen and learn. The longer we live the more we will realize that we haven’t learned much of anything worth learning. It is a crying shame that we know more about useless things than the one thing needful; that we can quote useless information but can’t quote very much of God’s Word.

The more a man grows in grace, the more he will listen and the less he will speak. Growth in grace is growth in meekness and humility. Humility makes a person dislike speaking of self and more ready to hear from others. Humility makes one listen with compassion and interest. True love is interested in the loved one, what they have to say; while self-love is more interested in what self has to say. The more a man grows in grace the more he will hate himself, and deny self. A big part of denying self is being tired of hearing your own voice. We deny self by denying that we have any self importance, knowledge, or wisdom that would make others want to hear from us. If we truly esteem other better than ourselves we would rather hear from them, than they hear from us, especially concerning our Lord’s Word. So, let every one of us be SWIFT TO HEAR.

Let every man be SLOW TO SPEAK. Scripture says: ‘A fool speaketh all his mind . . . A fool is readily known. He is quick to speak and his folly and ignorance is quickly known. But, even a fool is thought to be wise when he holds his peace. Someone once said, “It is better to keep our mouths shut and be thought a fool, than to open our mouths and remove all doubt.” How many times have we opened our big mouths too soon, spoken all our mind, let people have a piece of our mind, popped off, spoken off the top of our head, made a fool of ourselves by spouting off, and soon regretted it? How many times? Then later we curse ourselves for not keeping quiet. O’ how we should be slow to speak! Dear old brother Shanks once said, “Take every opportunity to SHUT UP!” Scripture says, “he that keepeth his mouth keepeth his soul from many troubles.” If we are slow to speak, not giving a reply or opinion too quickly, if we think about it a little bit, we may not say anything at all, or may have a change of mind. This is especially true when hearing God’s Word preached. I remember my pastor once say, ‘don’t judge something you’ve heard in five minutes that I spent five days studying.’

We may learn something from listening and be glad we didn’t speak and reveal our ignorance. The admonition of the Lord is, “God is in Heaven and thou upon earth, let thy words be few.” I remember once as a young boy, bragging and boasting of something to my friends (as young boys do, especially in a crowd); when I turned around and my dad was standing there listening. He knew me well and I wilted under his knowing look. The all-knowing Lord hears us spout off and He knows us! Best not to say much in His presence. Better to be swift to hear and slow to speak.

Let every man be SLOW TO WRATH. Sometimes we get mad or offended when someone disagrees or takes issue with us. The reason scripture tells us to admonish one another is because we need a great deal of straightening out. Quite often, after getting mad at someone for crossing us, we find out they were right and we were wrong. And if it was something helpful to us, something that might prevent us from making a mistake, we should be glad, not mad, that they crossed us. If we think too highly of ourselves we will think too highly of our opinions and get mad when someone disagree with us. Fact is, we are all sometimes foolish, and at all times sinners, so we should not be so easily offended by someone who disagrees with a foolish sinner. May the Lord make us swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to wrath. May He give us faith and wisdom by hearing, discretion in speaking, and meekness and humility to loathe ourselves and love others.

THE INFINITE CHRIST

“And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” | Matthew 7: 28-29

There is infinite value in that precious blood which He shed upon the Cross to make an atonement for sin. There is infinite pity in His heart toward sinners.

There is infinite readiness and willingness on His part to receive all who come to Him. There is infinite power in His arm to deliver and keep that which is committed unto Him. There is no sinner so depraved that Christ’s blood cannot cleanse him. There is no sinner so bound by the fetters of Satan that Christ cannot free him. There is no sinner so weary and despondent that Christ cannot satisfy him.

The promise of the Saviour himself is, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11: 28) O sin-sick soul, put him to the test for yourself, and see. Come to Christ just as you are, in all your wretchedness and need, and He will gladly receive you, blot out all your iniquities, and put a new song in your mouth.

May God in His grace cause some despondent ones to prove for themselves the infinite sufficiency of His Son.

“Be still, and know that I am God”

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.’

“There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.’

“Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” | Psalm 46: 1-11

How comforting it is to know that in moments of chaos and uncertainty, God’s sheep can be still, knowing that their Great Shepherd is God.

Though the world may crumble around them, in the promise of His covenant, and the security of His blood, they can lay down in green pastures of quietness and rest, without fear and without trouble. If the God of Jacob is our refuge, then The Lord of hosts is with us. In Christ our Savior, we shall not be moved. God will help us, and that right early.

Let’s just be still, and know that He is God.
