The Only Conclusion We Can Come To

”For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” | Ephesians 2: 8-10

When “the mystery of God is finished,” “time shall be no more,” and all of the redeemed of the Lord are gathered around their great Redeemer, perfected and glorified forever, the only visible evidence of the consequences of sin will be seen on the Redeemer Himself!

Every mark and trace of sin will have been removed from the saints of God.

The wounds inflicted upon Christ the Redeemer when He delivered Himself up to be crucified as the Substitute for sinners, “the just for the unjust,” that He might bring them to God, will be the only visible evidence of sin remaining.

What an eternal reminder that “by His stripes they are healed!”

They did all the sinning – He did all the suffering, dying, and saving.

What amazing love and grace!

What an amazing Redeemer-God!

“Praise the Saviour, ye who know Him! Who can tell how much we owe Him? Gladly let us render to Him, All we are and have.”

Himself

”Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:” | Galatians 1: 3-4

As the years roll along, I yearn more and more for that assurance that My sins are put out of God’s sight.

How is it that the holy Lord is pleased with me?

One word comes to view: HIMSELF. If I think on the grand doctrine of election, there is no comfort unless that word Himself appears. I must be careful not to be taken up with the doctrines of the gospel and leave Himself out. Doctrine is cold unless the person of our Lord Jesus Christ is uppermost therein.

He is all of salvation. He did not come merely to bring salvation, but He Himself is salvation. He loved me and gave Himself for me. He Himself is the good news. Eternal redemption is found in His life, death, and resurrection, and He is the gospel. Who His own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree. The only reason I am pleasing unto God is because of Himself.

Men say that we are cleansed by His blood and that is true, but it is only because that blood was a part of Himself. If we are chosen, we are chosen in Himself. There is no justification unless it is the righteousness of God in himself. Everything is bound up in the life and death of God’s dear son himself.

Not only is this true, but salvation must be in Himself alone.

He by Himself purged our sins. Every man to be saved must rest his whole soul upon Christ Himself.

Do not ever think a good thought about yourself.

Oh that every mouth might be stopped in talking about self. When we are brought to the place of ceasing to talk about ourselves, then, and only then, will we ever see the truth that once in the end of the world He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

If you have been brought to the place of a sinner who has nothing, knows nothing, can do nothing, then none but the Lord Jesus Himself will give you peace and rest.

You see, it is either yourself or Himself.

You would not really stand before the holy Lord God in yourself, would you?

This would be the height of insane depravity.

By the grace of God I have been enabled to say that it is Himself in totality.

A Perfect Sacrifice

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” | Matthew 11: 28

God cannot have a blemished priest at His altar or a blemished sacrifice thereon. Both the priest and the sacrifice must be perfect. (Leviticus 21Leviticus 22)

Now we have both the perfect Priest and the perfect sacrifice in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, He having offered Himself without spot to God.

In Him we have all that God requires, whether as the victim or the Priest.

We have all that God could require, and all that a man could need.

Salvation Is Of The Lord!

”But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” | Jonah 2: 9

He who gave Himself for us in the depths of woe and death, doth not withdraw the grant now that He is enthroned in the highest heavens.

I Am, I Will

”I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.” | 2 Corinthians 12: 11

The same man who said: “I be nothing” said: “Christ is all!”

Every true child of God enters in to what the apostle said, and totally agrees!

“Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” (Colossians 3: 11)

I am the chief sinner; He is the Chief Shepherd and Savior of sinners!

I am vile and wicked; He is Holy and Just!

I am absolute weakness; He is infinite strength!

I must decrease; He must increase!

I am worthless vanity; He is unsearchable riches!

I deserve wrath; He deserves Honor!

I deserve DEATH; He deserves GLORY!

I AM NOTHING; and CHRIST IS ALL!

But do you know what the glory of the gospel is?…

…He traded places with me.

When The Lord Speaks

”Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?” | Acts 2: 37

What happens when the Lord Jesus Christ speaks?

When the Holy Spirit pricks a sinner in the heart, beginning in regeneration and throughout the life of the believer, we cease to hear the words of a man. We hear the words of our Lord himself. That is what happened on the day of Pentecost.

An earthen vessel was speaking, but whose word was being preached?

It was a sinner preaching but whose Spirit sent forth the Word?

When the folks at Pentecost were made to hear, who did they hear?

“Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.” (Acts 2: 33)

Some only heard the voice of a men speaking in unlearned languages.

Some were listening to hear if Peter would tell them what man must do or must not do according to man’s own ability.

They were not listening to hear the Word of the One whom they had just rejected.

But the Spirit made some to truly hear and it had a sure and certain effect.

“Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2: 37)

For the first time, they heard the gospel of God.

“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:” (Romans 1: 1-5)

That is, by the power of the sovereign King Jesus, by grace they received the gift of faith from him, so that they could believe on him.

When God, through the promise of the Holy Spirit given to Christ Jesus, turned them from their empty tradition to their new King the gospel of Christ, the POWER OF GOD UNTO SALVATION, exploded their stony hearts.

Therefore, their response was the same as Saul of Tarsus after he heard King Jesus: “And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.” (Acts 9: 6)

That is what happens every time the Lord Jesus Christ speaks directly into our hearts.

Serving Two Masters

”No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” | Matthew 6: 24

The orders of the two masters are diametrically opposed.

The one commands you to walk by faith, the other by sight;

…the one to be humble, the other to be proud;

…the one to set your affection on things above, the other to set it on the things on the earth;

…the one to look at things unseen and eternal, the other to look at the things seen and temporal;

…the one to have your conversation in Heaven, the other to cleave to the dust;

…the one to be careful for nothing, the other to be full of anxiety;

…the one to be content with such things as ye have, the other to enlarge your desires as hell;

…the one to be ready to distribute, the other to withhold for self;

…the one to look on things of others, the other to look out for one’s own things;

…the one to seek happiness in the Creator, the other to seek happiness in the creature.

Is it not plain that there is no serving two such masters? “If ye love the one, ye must hate the other; if ye cleave to the one, you must despise the other.”

You cannot serve God and mammon!

To serve mammon, to lay up treasures on earth, is to make present, sensible, worldly things, the great subjects of our thoughts, the great object of our affection.

To serve God, to lay up treasures in Heaven, is just to make the things divine and heavenly the great subjects of our thoughts, and the great objects of our affection. The two things are obviously incompatible.

Scripture says the covetous man is an idolater.

The friendship of the world is enmity with God; and, whosoever will be a friend of the world, must be an enemy of God.

Will God Save A True Sinner?

”And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” | John 6: 40

Christ will never have finished his work upon believers till he has raised their bodies from the grave and glorified them like his own resurrected body.

He will never cease from the work which he has commenced on any one of his people till he has laid the top stone in the glorious perfections of heaven; and this truth is the joy of our hearts even now.

Boldness, Access, And Confidence

”In Whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of Him.” | Ephesians 3: 12

“Boldness” means: freedom in speaking; cheerful courage.

“Access” means: an open way without denial; the ability, right, and permission to approach and enter in.

“Confidence” means: trust, reliance, and assurance.

In chapter 2 verse 12 of his letter, the apostle Paul told the Ephesians that: without Christ we are aliens from the Commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world.

But he said in chapter 3 verse 12… With Christ! (In Christ) we have cheerful courage, an open way without denial, and assurance that we will be received!

“Seeing then that we have a Great High Priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God…” “Let us therefore come boldly (in Him) unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4: 14, 16)

God’s Dealings With Sinners

”Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;” | Titus 2: 12

In vain do we claim to be saved if the world still rules our heart.

Divine grace not only delivers from the wrath to come, but even now effectually “teaches” its recipients to deny “all ungodliness and worldly lust, that we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.”

Our Lord says, “Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”

That is, to turn away from all that stands in competition (for our affections) with the Lord Jesus, he cannot become a Christian.
