None Good But One

“Blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, set by the highway side begging.” | Mark 10: 46

All who the Lord shall save are like blind Bartimaeus.

What he was outwardly by nature is what he was inwardly by nature… blind, poor, and unable to work to provide life.

All he could do was sit and beg mercy from another.

We are so blind by nature that we cannot even see we need salvation.

When God gives us sight the first thing we behold is that our flesh profits nothing.

Only then will a sinner come to Christ empty and begging mercy.

Rahab The Harlot

”By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.” | Hebrews 11: 31

In our congregation (Bible Baptist Church, Madisonville, Kentucky) we have, Paul the engineer, Sharon the nurse, Jeff the contractor, Matthew the welder, LuAnn the secretary, and Noah the student.

Oftentimes we are identified with our occupation, or what we do in this life.

I don’t suppose that is a bad way to be remembered, unless, of course, you have an undesirable occupation.

Such was the case with Rahab. She was a harlot.

What a title to be stuck with some three thousand years after her death.

She wouldn’t deny it, that is what she was.

Yet, her name and title is recorded in “The believer’s hall of faith,” as one who had trusted in Christ and perished not.

In the end, it will not matter what my occupation was, or what I did. All that will matter is what Christ Jesus, the One who died to put my sin away, did for me.

With the believer, in heaven’s glory, the title, “Child of God,” will follow each of our names.

Blind Eyes Opened

”And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” | Luke 18: 9-14

One of the many promises concerning God’s servant is that He would open the eyes of the blind.

In the Lord’s parable of the Pharisee and the Publican who both went into the temple to pray we have an excellent example of what this means.

The Pharisee’s eyes had not been opened and thus he prayed: “I thank thee that I am not as other men.”

A person whose eyes have not been opened is blind to his sinfulness, that his righteousness is in God’s sight like filthy rags and as Solomon said “the plague of his own heart.”

The publican’s eyes had been opened and thus he prayed: “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

The word translated “merciful” shows that his eyes had been opened to see his sinfulness, and his need of an atonement to reconcile him to God.

The one atonement that reconciles sinners to God is the bloody sacrifice of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Has He opened your eyes to see your need and to sue for mercy?

Then you are part of the family of God which shall forever praise Him for the redeeming, justifying blood of the Son of God.

The Power of Darkness & Power of God

”Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.” | Psalm 119: 9

What does God’s word say about me?

Psalms 51: 5 says Behold, I was shaped in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. In Romans 7 Paul says, For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing. If a man is honest with himself he cannot deny that statement. Romans 7: 24 O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? We, like King Belshazzar, have been weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

What does God’s word say about God?

Genesis 1: 1 says In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. God is Holy, he is everything that we are not. Psalm 115: 3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. There is one God, he is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end of all things. God is that which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. God changeth not, Hebrews 13: 8 says Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and forever. God hath mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. We have sinned against God and that sin must be punished. The wages of sin is death. Romans 5: 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

Does God’s word say if I have any hope?

Ephesians 2: 4-5 says this, But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ. Lamentations 3: 22 It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. The sinners hope is in Christ Jesus. Apart from his grace and mercy can no one be saved. 2 Corinthians 5: 21 says For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

How can I enter into this hope?

Mathew 19: 26 tells us With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. In Acts, Paul and Silas told the Phillipian jailor Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Consider those people who were bitten by the fiery serpents back in Numbers. They lay there dying, unable to do anything about their condition. Moses interceded for the people and made that serpent of brass and set it upon a pole. And it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

That’s how we enter into this hope, by God’s grace he enables us to look and live.

The Lord makes us like old blind Bartimaeus and we cry Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me!

“It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.” (Lamentations 3: 26)

Come To Christ

“[A Prayer of David.]] Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy. Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee. Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.” | Psalm 86: 1-5

Christ told us, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” (John 7: 37) And “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11: 28)

Isaiah prophesied “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”

ANY, ALL, and EVERY ONE; come thirsty, tired and burdened.

Come to Christ now, without any payment of your works, and enter into true rest!
