A Heart Of Thanksgiving

”Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” | Psalm 40: 5

I recently read that somewhere, years ago in New England, there was a day of fasting each month to mourn over the sins of the land.

At last, some public official suggested that, instead of the day of mourning each month, they should appoint a feast and thank God for the mercies and blessings which He had given.

I was deeply convicted and strongly impressed by this article.

Do we dwell on our troubles and trials so much that we forget to give thanks for our blessings?

Instead of counting our blessings, we exaggerate our misfortunes.

Instead of praising God for many friends, our minds dwell on two or three contentious persons who wish us evil.

Instead of talking about our years of good health, we discuss our hours of pain.

Instead of rejoicing in our obedient and loving children, we complain about our prodigals.

It is good to fast, mourn over sin, and to take our burdens to the Lord; but it is right to LEAVE THEM THERE!

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” I plan to take this exhortation seriously and lift both my heart and voice to Him Who is the fountain of all mercies.

His mercies far outweigh His chastisements.

David said, “Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” (Psalm 40: 5)

If I would declare and speak of them, they are “more than can be numbered”.

John Newton once wrote, “Lord, if I have not loved Thee before, let me begin today.”

Today is a good day to love Him, thank Him, and praise Him.

Let this be “The day of beginning again.”

The Cause Was from The Lord

”And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:” | Hebrews 11: 32

The reason Rehoboam rejected the wise counsel of the elders and followed the foolish counsel of the young men was this… “The cause was from the Lord” (1 Kings 12: 15)

God is completely sovereign over all of the free and un-coerced actions of men.

How thankful we are for that!

The Blessed Man

”Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.” | Psalm 65: 4

David gives us two marks of a man truly blessed of God.

“Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee”.

First, a man who is blessed of God has been chosen by God unto salvation in divine election. Election is a great blessing for a sinful man because no one can do anything to deserve salvation.

“Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,” (Ephesians 1: 5)

No one can do anything to get God to choose them. God elected sinners “according to the good pleasure of his will.”

Election is a great blessing because it is always undeserved.

Second, a man who is blessed of God has been caused to approach God by the irresistible call of the Holy Spirit.

“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6: 44)

Man by nature does not have the ability to come to Christ unless God draws us to Christ.

“And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” (John 5: 40)

Man by nature also refuses to come to Christ for salvation.

No one deserves to be drawn to Christ since we have long refused Him. But what a blessing of God when He draws everyone He chose in divine election to Christ, the Savior of His people!

May God be pleased to make us blessed men and women!

Worship

”Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” | Hebrews 10: 23-25

It is the duty of all believers to meet together for worship, praise, study, and fellowship.

1). Because of God, who has appointed worship, Who approves of it, Who is glorified in it, and Who should be worshipped.

2). Because of Ourselves, we need to “draw nigh to God,” to “seek His face,” to praise, pray, and be refreshed and comforted – with other believers.

3). Because of Others — our families, friends, and neighbors who may, by our example and encouragement, be brought to seek the Lord.

But worship is not only a duty and commandment, worship is a blessed privilege.

David wrote, “Blessed is the man whom Thou choosest and causest to approach unto Thee, that he may dwell in Thy courts.”

We are blessed to have the desire to worship God and hear His word.

We are blessed to have the freedom to go to the place of worship.

We are blessed to have a family of believers with whom to meet and worship.

We are blessed to have elders and preachers called of God to preach to us and teach us the word.

We are blessed to have the physical strength to go to the house of the Lord and worship.

“Blessed INDEED is the man whom Thou choosest and causest to approach unto Thee.”
