Be Not Afraid, Only Believe

“While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.” | Luke 8: 49-50

These are the words our Lord spoke to Jairus, when his friends came telling him of his daughters death and of the lack of necessity for him to trouble the master any further.

Natural men always set limits on the ability and willingness of Christ to save sinners.

While she hung on by a thread, they had hope. But as soon as the thread was gone, so was their hope.

Because of their unbelief and doubt, they were neither permitted to follow or enter in to see His glory.

God give us the quiet submissive faith of Jairus, who patiently waited on the Lord and was permitted, by the Master to see the glory of life in His touch.

“There They Shall See Me”

“Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.” | Matthew 28: 10

Here the Lord Jesus Christ calls His people “my brethren”, gives instruction for them to meet Him, appoints a well-known place for them to meet and promises to be there!

Who in their right mind would be absent from such a conference with the crucified and risen Master?

And yet Christ does this same thing every week, and sinners are neglectful to attend. If our services are mere social gatherings with folks from the community to catch up on current events, then let’s consider our time better spent elsewhere.

If, however, they are worship services unto the Lord in which He Himself communes with and instructs us, then let us not only show up; but let us do so with joy, anticipation and great thanksgiving unto Him. Yea, let us fellowship heartily around the gospel and be edified, encouraged and comforted in Him.

What condescension on His part to gather with us, and yet it is His delight to do so. He “seeketh such” sinners to worship Him, who do so with prepared and anxious hearts. Marvelous grace for Him to say, “there shall they see me.”

How important is it to you to see the Master?

You answer that question each week by your attendance as well as your attitude.

It was so important to one woman that, weak and ill though she was, she broke through the pressing throng in order to touch His garment. Zaccheus climbed up a tree determined to catch a glimpse of this Great One. The two Mary’s in our text came “as it began to dawn” (Matthew 1: 1) to His tomb. When they learned He was risen and met Him, they “held Him by the feet and worshipped.”

Would to God we were all this desirous to see Him and this pleased when we do.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS FELLOWSHIP TO ME

“But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? | Matthew 3: 7

1.) I am a believer, a son of God in Christ Jesus. God has been pleased to reveal His Son in me. He is my life, my hope, and my refuge. I live by His grace and grow on His Word. And so I must constantly be where I can hear His Word in power, in the Holy Ghost, and in assurance. I must be fed on the truth!

2.) I love Christ, He is precious to me, and so all that is of Christ (His church, His ordinances, and His people) is precious to me. I not only feel that I must be identified with them in this world but it is also my greatest enjoyment to fellowship with believers around the person of Christ. I am just not happy or content around those who do not know or rejoice in Him. Where the people of Christ go, I will go; where they lodge, I will lodge; where they die, I will die, and there I will be buried. I will not be interested by whatever temptation there may arise to leave them.

3.) I am a frail human. I am subject to fall and subject to attacks from the world, the flesh, and the devil. I am not perfect and I have not arrived. I fear indifference, sin, and coldness of heart. Therefore, I need to be exhorted daily, I need to be encouraged, I need to be comforted, and I need to be rebuked. The world and its liberal preacher who cries “peace, peace” and the religionist will not do these things for me; only the true pastor and the true believer (who know my nature and need) can be all these things to me.

4.) I am a witness. Christ said, “Ye shall be my witnesses.” I am concerned for the salvation of my family, friends, and people around the world; therefore, I desire to bring my family and friends under the word of truth and help to send pastors, evangelists, preachers, and missionaries to other towns and countries to preach Christ.

My Father, I thank Thee for this fellowship of believers. I pray you will make them a blessing to me and will make me a blessing to them!

DO WE REALLY BELIEVE GOD?

“What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” | Luke 15: 4-7

If we truly believe God, we will serve Him with confidence and peace, simply trusting His total sovereignty, power, wisdom, and grace.

The fear of man shall not be a threat to us.

The favor of man shall not be a motive to us.

The circumstances of the hour shall not pressure us, and the desire for results shall not alter our message nor cause us to employ the popular methods of others.

If we believe God, we will simply perform our responsibilities faithfully and wait upon the Lord to work His purpose according to His will.

He is Altogether Lovely!

“But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:” | Acts 24: 14

Put the beauty of ten thousand worlds of paradises, like the Garden of Eden in one; put all trees, all flowers, all fragrances, all colors, all tastes, all joys, all loveliness, all sweetness in one. O what a lovely and excellent thing would that be! And yet it would be less compared to that beauteous and dearest well-beloved Christ than one drop of rain, compared to the whole seas, rivers, lakes, and foundations of ten thousand earths!

“Yes, He is altogether lovely! This is my Beloved, and this is my Friend!” (Song of Songs 5: 16)
