According To His Purpose

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” | Romans 8: 28

All things work together for good. If we could only learn this.

We know that it is true!

We believe that it is so!

But for some reason this FACT from God is one of the hardest things for our flesh to understand and rest in. Daily, we are confronted with things that seem so awful and unfortunate to us, but based on the Word of our God (the God who cannot lie) everything that we are faced with is PURPOSED for good!

If the Lord would settle our hearts on this, our days would be bright rather than gloomy; our hearts would be full of happiness rather than full of sorrow; and our minds would rest in the PEACE of our God’s perfect providence rather than staying torn all to pieces over the chaos of this sinful world.

If God has secured us in the blood of Christ, our eternal life in glory, AND our temporary life on earth are BOTH settled, ordered, and sure! Knowing this, every time we ask ourselves, “Why did this happen?”, we ought to immediately answer ourselves with, “For good!”

All things are for the glory of God, the furtherance of the gospel, and the salvation of men and women’s souls. All things are for the purpose of bringing God’s people to Christ.

That makes ALL THINGS “good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”

“According to the Word of the Lord”

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” | John 1: 14

Such phrasing is often found in the book of God (38 times in the Old Testament); it means exactly as it sounds.

That our great and glorious Sovereign does upon earth and in Heaven as He pleases, when He pleases and where He pleases.

What God has determined to do, that He shall do and this He does for His church, His bride, His elect children.

Never in time shall that come to pass what Jehovah has NOT deemed to be done or purposed.

So comforting is this to His dear children that they may, as they say, take it to the bank. Whether we are speaking about our Savior’s promises to us or His plain and simple words towards us or even His precious Substitutionary work of redemption on our behalf; it is all the same, that which is done, shall be done simply because: it is “according to the word of the Lord.”

Oh, may we remember this, dear ones, as we seek to honor Him as we sojourn here upon this earth; nothing about our God is fickle or hints at instability, only the potsherds of this world have such characteristics.

To God be the glory both now and forever more.

Dealing With Sin

“And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.” | Matthew 26: 75

How different from us does Christ deal with sin!

I would venture to say that Peter would never have been allowed to preach had we been in the Lord’s place. Or if he had, our confrontation with Peter would likely have made Peter unwilling to preach.

There is no question that this confrontation with Peter was because of Peter’s denial. But it is interesting to note that the Lord never once mentioned Peter’s denial. He did not ask Peter to rehearse his crime. Neither did the Lord require Peter to resolve to do better. Peter’s resolve had not helped him before and it would not likely help him later. Nor do we find our Lord laying out a plan of action for Peter so that he will not fail in the future.

Our Lord went straight to the heart of it with a simple question, “Peter, do you love me?”

With that question asked three times, our Lord forgave Peter’s sin, cleared his conscience, fit him for service and revealed to us the strongest resistance to sin.

I would be willing to bet that every time after that when Peter was tempted to deny the Lord for fear, he remembered the Master’s question, “Peter do you love me.”

No whip of law or fear of punishment, just simple love.
