Training

”And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not” | Hebrew 12: 5-7

As I ponder the words of these blessed verses in Hebrews chapter 12, I must admit that I too had forgotten this great exhortation and encouragement. First, it is a great encouragement to me because it is spoken to me as a child, a son of the living God. How beautiful are the words, “My son,” when they fall from the lips of God Almighty.

Sometimes things get rough and tough for the believing child of God. Often we get discouraged in these trials and troubles. But we shouldn’t! They are nothing more than the “chastening of the Lord.” This chastening comes from His hand. I find it very interesting that the word “chastening” in the original Greek means “training.” God is training us as His children. He is training us to trust and rely on Him no matter what He sends our way.

“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth…” He trains, teaches, and reveals to us His will, purpose and providence, because He loves us. What must we do to assure our place as the children of God? Simply endure this chastening, (this correcting, this training) knowing that God always does what is best for those whom He loves and who love Him! When we endure all that God sends our way, we have the peace and comfort in knowing that God is dealing with us as His children, “for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?”

The next time you find yourself in trouble or facing a hard trial, remember that it is your heavenly Father that has sent it, He has sent it for your good and for His glory, and thank Him for it.

Faith’s Companion: Trial

”My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience’… “Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” | James 1: 2, 3; 1 Peter 1: 6,7

Every Child of grace knows for certain that these things are true, we have but to look at that great chapter of faith in Hebrews 11 to see that faith has a companion and her name is ‘trial.’

So my dear weak one what are we to do when a drop of His sweet honey blessing comes our way for to follow it is surely a trial?

What are we to do my dear lowly brother, sister as our God shines upon us this day for we know that tomorrow a cloud could possibly draw near?

Well, David tells us this for sure: “Wait upon the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” (Psalm 27: 14)

“I have done so preacher and I am still frightened that I will fall anyway, I have no peace concerning my waiting and my looking.” Oh, my companion in the faith and in this trial, do not look to yourself or even your waiting.

Hear another word which will close the issue at least on this side of glory, “but I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not,” this settles it does it not.

Our Saviour says these words to every one of His sheep, though they be tried and cumbered about with much difficulty!

Rest in Him, Rest in His words, Rest I say and do nothing else.

Look to Him who is the object, the cause and the reason for our faith.

Breadth, Length, Depth, Height

”Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.” | Ephesians 3: 13

Oh the difference between eternal existence and eternal life; “And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent.” (John 17: 3)

THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD HATH TAKEN AWAY

”Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, and said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD” | Job 1: 20-21

When God had sent Job severe trials he fell down upon the ground and worshipped. (Job 1: 20)

In his worship he magnified his Lord as the absolute sovereign in all things. (Romans 11: 36)

Some people would only recognize that the Lord gives, which He abundantly does. (Psalm 40: 5; John 3: 16) However, the believer also rejoices that the Lord gives and that the Lord does take away.

The Lord Jesus Christ does abundantly give His people all things in salvation. “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8: 32; 1 Corinthians 2: 12) The believer can also rejoice that the Lord does also take away.

He has taken away all our sin. “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1: 29) “But now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself” (Hebrews 9: 26)

Believers, like Job, bow before the Lord and worship Him. We do rejoice that our great God does all things well.

As David said, “As for God, His way is perfect” (2 Samuel 22: 31)

UNLESS…

“UNLESS thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine afflictions” | Psalm 119: 92

The psalmist’s life, for the most part, was a life of trials and afflictions.

He knew the grief of being pursued by enemies, betrayed and forsaken by friends, and worst of all, he bore the grief of his own sins and sinfulness in his conscience before God. He knew what he was! And to some degree every believer can identify with the psalmist in his trials and afflictions.

It is very instructive to note how the psalmist persevered through his trials and afflictions. If I may paraphrase the verse above, the psalmist is simply saying, ‘I could not have made it without the Word of God!’

The promises of his faithful God were his “delight” amidst his afflictions and sorrows. When all other comforts failed, he had the spiritual comfort of the words of his great and gracious God.

When he may have otherwise despaired, he was reassured and strengthened by the promises of his God.

When the heart of a believer stands in need of enlivening and reviving, nothing but the Word of God can uplift him.

Not all the gold and silver in the world, not even his Christian friends, but the Word of God alone can cheer and gladden the afflicted and sorrowful soul. No wonder the psalmist said, “O how I love thy law.” And, “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth.” (Psalm 119: 97, 103)

How necessary, how precious, how essential is the Word of God to true believers. Those who can “make it” without the Word of God are still in the darkness of nature.

They can “make it” because they are not in the battle!
