Jesus Christ Himself

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:” | Colossians 2: 9,10

My friends, how vain and futile are any efforts on our part either to add unto or to improve upon the glorious righteousness of our blessed Lord Jesus.

Then what must I do to be saved?

‘BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!’

Ours is to ‘BELIEVE.’

His is to ‘DO.’

The Only Reason For Salvation

“I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake” | 1 John 2: 12

There is only one reason revealed in Holy Scripture that any sinner would be pardoned from all sin.

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4: 32)

That one reason is Christ alone.

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John 3: 5)

Christ Jesus was manifested to take away our sin and in Him is no sin.

“And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.” (John 1: 16)

The only reason for grace is Christ.

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” (Titus 3: 5)

The only reason for mercy is Christ.

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4: 12)

The only reason for salvation is Christ.

“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:” (1 Corinthians 1: 30)

The only reason for sanctification is Christ.

“Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:” (Romans 5: 20)

His name’s sake includes all these things and much more.

“Sing, O ye heavens; for the LORD hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.” (Isaiah 44: 23)

Salvation is not because of our merit, nor our baptism, nor our works, nor our prayers, nor our repentance, nor our faith; but for the sake of Christ, his blood, sacrifice and satisfaction; and it reaches to all our sins, original and actual, secret and open, past, present, and future.

“But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” (Isaiah 43: 1-2)

The only reason for our salvation is not found in us, but rather in the Lord Jesus Christ alone.

The Difference In No Faith, Weak Faith, And Strong Faith.

“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.” | Luke 17: 5

When a person has no faith at all, he looks to his own flesh for all of his confidence before God.

He believes that God will be satisfied with him by what he sees in himself – his actions, his words, and his thoughts.

When a person has weak faith, he looks to himself for a little bit of confidence before God.

He knows that he will never be able to satisfy God outside of the blood of Christ, but something in him still thinks that he must produce good actions, good words, and good thoughts along with Christ’s blood before God will accept him.

When a person is strong in faith, he does not look to himself at all.

He knows that he can have absolutely no confidence in his flesh.

When it comes to God accepting him, all of his hope is in Christ’s actions, Christ’s words, and Christ’s thoughts.

He firmly believes that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief!” And “He is made unto (me) wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.”

In summary…

  • No faith – has all confidence in the flesh.
  • Weak faith – has a little confidence in the flesh.
  • Strong faith – has NO confidence in the flesh at all!

Christ is all I need!

Whoever Shall Call On His Name

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” | Romans 10: 13

Regeneration makes no alteration on the flesh, but the Spirit.

There is nothing in the flesh made holy.

And there is nothing in the Spirit left unholy.

Take Your Burden To The Lord

“And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.” | Job 1: 21-22

I know my sins, but I rejoice in His grace.

I know my weakness, but I rest in His strength.

I know my emptiness, but I am complete in Him.

‘O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,” all because we do not cast our sins, our souls on Christ and LEAVE THEM THERE!

The Believer’s Position

“Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.” | Ephesians 2: 5-7

The believer is perfect in Christ; but in himself he is a poor, feeble creature, ever liable to fall.

Oh, the unspeakable blessedness of having One who can manage all his affairs for him at the right hand of the Majesty in the heavens;

One who upholds him always by His right hand;

One who will never let him go;

One who is “the same yesterday, today, and forever;”

One who will bear him through all the difficulties and dangers which surround him and finally present him faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.

Blessed forever be the grace that has made such provision for all our need in the blood of a spotless victim and the intercession of a Divine High Priest!

Access To God With Confidence

‘In whom, (in Christ) we have boldness and access with confidence, by the faith of him.’ | Ephesians 3: 12

Do you see anything in the above short verse that claims that we do anything to make ourselves holy?

It is in Christ that the believer has boldness to come to God for mercy, grace and help.

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4: 16)

It is only in the Lord Jesus that we have access.

I was never required to call ahead for permission when I went to visit my parents.

Why?

I was their son.

I never had to knock on their door to gain entry.

I had a key! I had access.

I had boldness and confidence that the key would open the door and that I was always welcome.

In Christ we have boldness and access with confidence, and do you see the cause of it?

It is all by the faith of Him, the Lord Jesus Christ.

No, not faith in Him, but faith in what Christ my Lord, by His faithfulness to God, did for His elect in Him and for Him.

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;” (Ephesians 1: 7)

This is why we preach that salvation is in a Person, it is in Christ, in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.

A Plan Or A Purpose?

“These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” | 1 Timothy 3: 14-16

I hear many people talk about God having a plan for our lives.

I hear others speak of God having a plan of salvation.

The nature of the word “plan” subtly destroys the sovereignty of God and the helplessness of man.

God does not “plan” anything.

The sovereign God PURPOSES everything.

A plan (like a blueprint) is something that someone else can carry out and put into being.

Salvation is not God’s plan that man must make effectual by his obedience.

“The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.” (Isaiah 14: 24)

Salvation is what God purposed to do for His people by the obedience and sacrifice of His Son and what Christ the Savior has fully accomplished for His people.

“Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.” (Romans 1: 13)

A plan also may or may not come to pass. I have planned to do many things that I did not do.

Salvation is not God’s plan.

“For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?” (Isaiah 14: 27)

Salvation is the purpose of God for His people.

“In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.” (Ephesians 1: 11)

A purpose which God SHALL bring to pass.

Christ Is The Savior Of Sinners

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” | 1 Timothy 1: 15

It is because sinners are the only people who need saving.

If you are a sinner come to Christ for Christ is the Savior of sinners.

The True God, True Elect, True Redeemer

“And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.” | 2 Kings 11: 19

We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.

That portion cut me to the heart, while at the same time it has been my hope.

If I am to stand by myself to give an account, I am lost forever; but it is the judgment seat of Christ.

He is my surety and has paid all demands.

I shall be tried there by a covenant of grace, not a covenant of works.

Blessed be God for His great Salvation.

I bless God that the promises of the gospel met me in all my wants, wounds, and wretchedness.

I wish to die with “God be merciful to me a sinner” upon my lips.
