EXCEPT YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS BE PERFECT

“For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven” | Matthew 5: 20

Beloved, it is by the doing and dying of Christ that we are saved.

Indeed, through the death of His sin atoning blood and the life of His perfect righteousness as our substitute, we are and SHALL BE SAVED. (Matthew 1: 21) It is not enough that you have your sins forgiven, in fact you must be made the perfect righteousness of God! Through Christ, through His perfect life as a man, our Heavenly Father made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5: 21)

All the Scribes, all the Popes, all the Buddhas, Mohamed and all who follow them—all need a righteousness that exceeds their own to go to heaven; they need the perfect righteousness of Christ. Reader, God give you grace to hear and believe His Son, for without His righteousness, no one comes to the Father, as our Lord plainly tells us “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14: 6)

Beloved, it is by the doing and dying of the Lord Jesus Christ that we are saved – for if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. (Romans 5: 10)

To you who believe; rest with us, for we have received double of the Lord’s hand! Not only do we have a full and complete pardon of all our sins; much more beloved, He has removed our iniquity from us and clothed us with His perfect life; indeed His perfect righteousness. AMEN! (Genesis 3: 21; Isaiah 40: 1-2; Isaiah 54: 17; 1 Corinthians 1: 30)

The Purpose Of God

“For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.” | Romans 9: 17

We believe, according to the scriptures, that the Lord our God is a God of purpose, absolute and unalterable purpose.

Before the world began, Almighty God sovereignly purposed all that ever comes to pass in time.

Nothing in this world is left to chance.

Everything is moving toward the predetermined end of God’s eternal purpose with absolute, precise accuracy. Even a casual reader of Holy Scripture has to face this fact: The God of the Bible is a God of purpose.

Read:
Romans 8: 28-30
Romans 9: 11-26
Romans 11: 33-36
Ephesians 1: 3-14
Ephesians 3: 11
2 Timothy 1: 9

These passages plainly state that the Triune Jehovah is a God of purpose, and clearly teach several things about the purpose of God:

The purpose of God is eternal.

The purpose of God includes all things.

The purpose of God has for its peculiar design the everlasting benefit of God’s elect. Everything that God has purposed is for the ultimate, spiritual, and eternal benefit of his covenant people.

The purpose of God is immutable and sure. The Lord himself says, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isaiah 46: 10)

And in its ultimate end, God’s purpose will accomplish the eternal salvation of his chosen people and the glory of his own great name.

The Only Place Of Comfort

“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice” | Philippians 4: 4

God’s people rejoice in the Lord always.

They rejoice that His grace is always sufficient, that His blood cleanses them from all sin, that by His imputed righteousness they are justified before the law, that His love for them never fails, that by His providence all things work together for their good, that His intercession for them before the Father is never ceasing and that their names, for His sake, are written in heaven.

A PERFECT SACRIFICE

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” | Matthew 11: 28

God cannot have a blemished priest at His altar or a blemished sacrifice thereon. Both the priest and the sacrifice must be perfect. (Leviticus 21-22)

Now we have both the perfect Priest and the perfect sacrifice in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, He having offered Himself without spot to God.

In Him we have all that God requires, whether as the victim or the Priest.

We have all that God could require, and all that a man could need.

The Believer’s Hope

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” | Matthew 11: 28-30

Have you heard the story of the Irishman who was converted to Christ and whose priest told him that he had better not read the Bible because he was unlearned?

The priest said, “I will get the milk of the Word and bring it to you.” To which the Irishman replied, “I will be much obliged to you, sir, if you will bring me the milk of the Word; but, I intend to keep a cow myself. That way I will be sure to get the milk PURE.”

That is what I want you to do, keep a cow yourself; carry a Bible with you and see whether the milk you are receiving from the pulpit is PURE!

You can trust your body to physicians and your finances to brokers and not suffer too great a loss if they are wrong but, to trust your eternal soul to a preacher and find out in the end that his was ANOTHER GOSPEL is to lose eternally.

“Search the Scriptures daily, whether these things are so” (Acts 17: 11)

Not Eloquent, Why?

“And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?” | Exodus 4: 10-11

The LORD made Moses slow of speech.

Think of all God had given Moses since birth: he delivered Moses out of the river, raised Moses in Pharaoh’s house, directed his steps to where he was now, and gave him all these sure promises.

The LORD could have given Moses eloquence but he did not. Why?

The glory in delivering his people is the Lord’s. “This is the word of the LORD… Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Zechariah 4: 6)

Do You Know The Lord?

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” | Titus 3: 5

I recently had someone ask me if I trusted in works. My first reaction was to say God forbid!

But I answered this way: Yes, I trust in works; but they are not my works.

I trust in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I trust in him and what he did for sinners like me. He did for me what I couldn’t do for myself. He worked out a perfect righteousness for me.

I trust Him and his work alone for all my salvation.

His works are now my works.

According to His Purpose

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” | Romans 8: 28

All things work together for good. If we could only learn this.

We know that it is true!

We believe that it is so!

But for some reason this FACT from God is one of the hardest things for our flesh to understand and rest in. Daily, we are confronted with things that seem so awful and unfortunate to us, but based on the Word of our God (the God who cannot lie) everything that we are faced with is PURPOSED for good!

If the Lord would settle our hearts on this, our days would be bright rather than gloomy; our hearts would be full of happiness rather than full of sorrow; and our minds would rest in the PEACE of our God’s perfect providence rather than staying torn all to pieces over the chaos of this sinful world.

If God has secured us in the blood of Christ, our eternal life in glory, AND our temporary life on earth are BOTH settled, ordered, and sure! Knowing this, every time we ask ourselves, “Why did this happen?”, we ought to immediately answer ourselves with, “For good!”

All things are for the glory of God, the furtherance of the gospel, and the salvation of men and women’s souls. All things are for the purpose of bringing God’s people to Christ.

That makes ALL THINGS “good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”

Look And Live!

“Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.” | Psalm 86: 3-5

Throughout the Bible that act of faith by which we receive eternal life is spoken of as a look.

Like those children of Israel who were bitten by the fiery serpents had to look to the brazen serpent for life, we must look to Christ crucified for life eternal.

Salvation begins in a look. “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else” (Isaiah 45: 22) We must look away from ourselves to Christ for our entire salvation.

Salvation is maintained by a look. “Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down on the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12: 2)

Salvation will end in a look. “And they shall see his face.” (Revelation 22: 4)

If you hope to see the Savior’s face with joy in glory, you must look to him now.

Look, I say, look to Christ! Look and live!

Have We Learned Christ?

“But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:” | Ephesians 4: 20-21

The believer is a person who has undergone and is undergoing a divine work of grace within.

This work began and continues by the hearing of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In verse 21, of our text, plainly states, “if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus.” This hearing is not the common hearing of men but the hearing of the gospel in power and in demonstration of the Holy Spirit.

In I Corinthians 2: 4, where this is stated, the word demonstration means an inward manifestation of the gospel. God, the Holy Spirit, demonstrates the mercy and grace of Christ within the hearing sinner and he is sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. (Ephesians 1: 13) Those who truly hear know that both the messenger and his message is from the Lord. John said, “we are of God; he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby, know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.” (I John 4: 6)

All those who hear the gospel, in power, are born of God and given the ability, the right, and the privilege to become sons of God. (John 1: 12-13) They have, by the gracious gift of the Father, been “made meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.” (Colossians 1: 12) Those who truly hear, keep on hearing, and never lose their appetite for the gospel.

In Hebrews 10: 39, Paul says, “we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”

The believer is a person who has undergone a divine transformation; a divine work of grace within. He is not what he was and not yet what he hopes to be, but is what he is by the grace of God; a new creature in Christ Jesus. “For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that he should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2: 8-10)

The believer is rather like a woman shopping who sees a garment and thinks to herself how good she would look with it on. So she finds a way to get it. Believers do not continue to walk in the vanity of their minds but have seen with spiritual eyes the beauty and majesty of Christ. “Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ and make provision for the flesh.” (Romans 13: 14)

Apart from this inward work of grace all else is folly.
