Wise To Consider The End

“O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!” | Deuteronomy 32: 29

Do we ever think about our souls at all?

Millions of people, I fear, cannot answer that question satisfactorily. They never give the subject of religion any place in their thoughts. From the beginning of the year to the end they are absorbed in the pursuit of business, pleasure, politics, money, or self-indulgence of some kind or another.

Death and judgment, eternity, heaven, hell, and a world to come, are never calmly looked at and considered. They live on as if they were never going to die, or rise again, or stand at the bar of God, or receive an eternal sentence! They do not openly oppose religion, for they have not sufficient thoughts about it to do so; but they eat, and drink, and sleep, and get money, and spend money, as if religion was a mere fiction and not a reality.

They are neither Roman Catholic, nor Socinians, nor infidels, nor High Church, nor Low Church, nor Broad Church.

They are just nothing at all, and do not take the trouble to have opinions.

A more senseless and unreasonable way of living cannot be conceived; but they do not pretend to reason about it. They simply never think about God, unless frightened for a few minutes by sickness, death in their families or an accident. Barring such interruptions, they appear to ignore religion altogether, and hold on their way cold and undisturbed, as if there were nothing worth thinking about except this world.

It is hard to imagine a life more unworthy of an immortal creature than such a life as I have just described, for it reduces a man to the level of a beast. But it is literally and truly the life of multitudes in the world; and as they pass away… their place is taken by multitudes just like them.

Five Things About Manna

“And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.” | Revelation 19: 3-6

There are five things pictured in the heavenly manna as it is given in figure of Christ the true bread of God. (Exodus 16: 1-31) These are things which every believer shall come to know in the sweet experience of grace.

First: He will come to see that this true manna was provided by God alone. It did not rise up out of the cursed ground or evolve on the herb bearing grass; it was divinity given. “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” (John 6: 31) “He commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven and rained down manna upon them to eat and gave them the corn of heaven.” (Psalm 75: 23-24)

Second: This manna must be discovered. All those who did not look did not discover the manna. The manna fell where God said it would. The manna fell in the assemble of God. The manna was easy to find. Most men do not find Christ because they do not look where the manna is revealed.

Third: The manna must be gathered. Manna on the ground did no good to anyone. Simply hearing about the manna satisfied no mans hunger. It must be gathered. Who gathered this manna? Hungry souls sought it out and gathered it in.

Fourth: The manna must be processed. Israel did not just scoop it up by handfuls and eat it like jelly beans; it was ground in the mills or beaten in a mortar and then baked into bread. (Matthew 11: 8) The gospel of Jesus Christ is processed by the inward working of the Spirit. (I Corinthians 2: 10-14) It must be heard, considered, understood, and believed.

Fifth: The manna must be eaten. Manna in a basket will not give life. It must be chewed and swallowed. It must be taken within where God, the Holy Spirit, makes it one with us and creates faith and life and hope.

Christ is our manna! May God be pleased to guide us where he can be found, reveal him to our hearts, cause us to gather to ourselves the full measure God has given, help us to process what we have gathered, and eat to the full what God has given. Amen

AN INGLORIOUS RUIN

“Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; but to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.” | Psalm 16: 1-3

“Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.” (Psalm 39: 5)

The human race does not realize nor recognize its ruin.

Unregenerate people naturally cannot see their lost condition for they are spiritually dead to God. For the most part, people see themselves in a rather glorious light.

However, this is not how God sees the human race.

God sees the human race as it is, lost, dead in trespasses and sins and in constant rebellion, and the way God sees it is the way it is.

Take any man at his best state, when he is praying, giving, reading God’s word, it is altogether vanity apart from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is my worth and my completeness before God. “And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:” (Colossians 2: 10)

And All Flesh Died

“And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, AND EVERY MAN” | Genesis 7: 21

The number of them (men) is supposed to be as great, if not greater, than the present inhabitants of the earth, by those who are skillful in the calculation of the increase of men. It is thought it may be easily allowed, that their number amounted to eleven billion; and some have made their number to be 80 billion.

Our Righteousness Keeps Us Apart

“For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. | Matthew 13: 15

There is not a sin upon you that the blood of Christ cannot wash clean.

There is not an offense that the gracious God cannot forgive.

The great obstacle that lies between you and God is not your sin so much as your righteousness! It is true that our sins have separated us from our God, but it is our righteousness that keeps us apart.

There is a remedy for sin in the gospel, so our sin is no hindrance to our salvation in Christ. However, our righteousness will keep us from simply receiving God’s grace in Christ; and that will prevent our being saved.

If you have not trusted the Lord Jesus to save your soul by His blood and righteousness, it is because you yet have hope in your own righteousness: either a righteousness you have already performed or one that you hope to perform in the future. How subtle is self-righteousness!

God grant you and me grace to see it for what it is and forsake it in favor of Christ who is our righteousness.

False Teachers Described and Denounced

“For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was. But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.” | 2 Timothy 3: 6-11

The false teachers described in these verses work after the manner of their father, Satan.

As Satan attacked the woman and not the man (the subtle tempter beguiled Eve and not Adam), so these, his instruments, work themselves into the affection of the weaker vessel. (1 Timothy 2: 14) Every cult, sect and free-will Arminian denomination or church is dominated by women is silly, easily influenced women who like to be told that they are religious, holy and righteous! They reject the gospel of God’s free grace and mercy for sinners in Christ, for they are full of the sins of self-righteousness and are led forth by a lust for new teachers, new doctrines and new heights of personal glory.

The exaltation of Mary and the effeminate influence of Catholicism has led women to think that they are morally good and that men are bad! (Romans 3: 10:19) Both the teachers and the captives of their humanistic religions are always learning… driven by restless minds and curiosity, but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth in Christ. They learn about missions, prophecy, heaven, standards of morality and gifts of the Spirit, but never how God can be just and justify the ungodly.

They reform, but never repent; they pray, but never plead for mercy; they testify, but never turn to Christ; they boast of their faithfulness to religion, but never bow to the lordship of Christ. Without apology, I declare that where women reign in religion, they ruin! (1 Timothy 2: 12; 1 Corinthians 14: 34)

There Was A Division Because of HIM

“And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes. And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.” | Numbers 10: 31-32

There was a division because of Him” (John 7: 43; John 9: 16; John 10: 19)

In this religious world you will hardly find anyone that is “for” drunkenness, immorality or abortion. You can eliminate all the bars, houses of prostitution and even all abortions, but you have not even touched the real issue!

The real issue, as in these passages, is where Christ is being challenged or His authority questioned or His right to rule and redeem those whom He has chosen! We can agree upon all the previously mentioned areas and still not come close to telling sinners the “Truth” about who God is, how He is satisfied and how vile rebels can be made just with the Holy God.

If you look at each of these passages those religious people were divided regarding “HIM.” They would rather hear about the moral issues of the day or the economy of the hour or even the “moral majority” platform and what it is doing for our country.

Paul said I am determined not to know anything among you except Christ and Him crucified… and the moment we pursue any other issue we have fundamentally turned our back on The Gospel.

No sinner was ever saved by being in agreement with or not being in agreement with the world on the issues of the day. I’m not saying these causes are not important. I am saying that these are never THE ISSUE and we are simply to confess Christ in this Christ-less generation and confessing Christ is telling people the good news of the redemption in and by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Debt of Love

“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if [there be] any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love [is] the fulfilling of the law.” | Romans 13: 8-10

The law can and does require that you respect and treat your neighbor according to that which is right. The law can demand a penalty for disobedience in this. But the law cannot cause you to love your neighbor.

The civil law of our land does not really care if you love your neighbor or not as long as you do not harm him or his property. God’s spiritual law is different. Though I obey the letter of the law outwardly, yet do not love, it is worthless. Even though I go beyond just refraining from offense against any, and sell all I have and give it to the poor, without love, it is worthless. (1 Corinthians 13)

This love is the fruit of the Spirit in God’s people and restrains the evil in our heart toward our fellow man, but before God, His spiritual law requires that we keep the letter of the law perfectly, and love perfectly. You see the law of God scrutinizes uncompromisingly not only what we do, but why.

No man has ever kept the letter of the law, nor loved perfectly, but the Lord Jesus Christ. This is why God’s law condemns us and also why Christ is our only righteousness. “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.” (Galatians 4: 4-5)

Love is clearly the fulfilling of the law, as revealed here, because if we truly could love perfectly then we would never hurt or defraud the objects of our love, neither God nor man.

Our Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled the law perfectly in that He is love, and having loved us perfectly, He not only could never harm or wrong us, but He gave Himself for us. And because of His perfect, infinite love for His Father and us, He not only fulfilled the law perfectly as our Representative but paid the penalty for our lawlessness, washing us from our sins in His own precious blood. Upon this basis we are exhorted to love, not in word only, but in deed and in truth. (1 John 3: 18)

THE GOSPEL PROCLAIMED

“Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” | Galatians 1: 3-5

Our Lord sent the apostle Paul to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentile world.

God was pleased to bless the message and call out a multitude of guilty sinners to Himself. Many churches were established in the region of Galatia. After Paul had been imprisoned in Rome for the gospel’s sake, many false teachers came among the churches preaching a false message of works salvation. The apostle called it, “another gospel” or a “perverted gospel.” He also pronounced a strong curse upon all who declared such a message of, “Christ plus our efforts and righteousness equal salvation” (Galatians 1: 6-12)

Let us consider four things Paul plainly states about the true gospel of the grace of God revealed in these verses.

1). The reason why the Lord came in the flesh, “That he might deliver us from this present evil world.” It is very obvious that no man is able to deliver Himself from the pit of sin and guilt. Only a fool would say, “I need no Redeemer.” This is why the Lord came, to completely deliver and effectually redeem His people from their sin. (Matthew 1: 21; Romans 11: 26) We can be certain that He did not fail. (Isaiah 42: 4; Romans 4: 25; Romans 8: 32) Any preaching that does not set Jesus Christ forth as the complete and effectual Deliverer, is “another gospel.”

2). How did He accomplish this deliverance? “Who gave himself for our sins.” The redemption of the Lord’s sheep came at a great price. (Acts 20: 28) He purchased us with His own blood. (1 Peter 1: 18) Atonement and payment for sin can only be achieved by Jesus Christ our great High Priest. (Hebrews 9: 12; 1 Peter 3: 18; 2 Corinthians 5: 21; 1 John 4: 10) Any preaching that does not declare Jesus Christ’s triumphant and complete atonement for sin is, “another gospel.”

3). Why Jesus Christ came and why He died, “According to the will of God and our Father.” If it had not been for the predestinating purpose of God and His eternal decree, Jesus Christ would not have died. (Acts 2: 23) If Christ had not died, none would be delivered. Salvation is always accomplished, determined and dependent upon God alone. Any preaching that makes salvation dependent and determined according to the will of men is “another gospel.” (John 1: 12-13; James 1: 18; Romans 9: 15-16)

4). What shall we say concerning this great salvation, “To whom be glory for ever and ever.” The grand design and ultimate end of everything God wills and performs is His glory. (Exodus 33: 18-19; Galatians 6: 14; 1 Corinthians 1: 30-31) Any preaching that does not give God all the glory in the salvation of sinners is, “another gospel.”

On The Death of Christ

“Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.” | 2 Samuel 9: 6-7

Christ did not die to win our sympathy, nor did He die to win our friendship.

He died so that a holy God could save our souls.

He died so that “GOD COULD BE JUST AND THE JUSTIFIER OF THE UNGODLY.”

His death is not a PATTERN but a PAYMENT.

His death is not an EXAMPLE, but an ATONEMENT.

His death does not REVIVE US, but it REDEEMS US.

If you are not saved, it is not because His blood is not sufficient nor does not have the power to save, but because you reject this remedy.

God will not pardon without satisfaction by the blood of Christ.

If you ever see this “Fountain opened,” you will cry with the woman of Samaria, “Give me this water, that I thirst no more.”
