Salvation Is Of The Lord

“But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.” | Psalm 37: 39

What glorious and blessed truth that shines on every page of Holy Scripture.

We as needy, great and guilty sinners need a mighty and victorious Saviour, who is almighty to save. (Isaiah 63: 1; Hebrews 7: 25) The Lord Jesus Christ is the only answer and remedy for our sin. He is the Saviour that saves, (Matthew 1: 21) the Redeemer that delivers and justifies. (Galatians 1: 3-5; Romans 5: 6)

What a full and complete revelation God gives of His, so great salvation it is ALL of the Lord. (Hebrews 2: 3)

Notice each of these five words:

1). Salvation; is the total and complete deliverance from all our sin. From the penalty, guilt and power of sin to condemn us. (Romans 8: 1; Romans 8: 32-35)

2). Salvation IS; because our great God is the God of salvation. God is love. (1 John 4: 8-10) God is good. (Psalm 73: 1) God is merciful and delights to show it to sinners. (Micah 7: 18-19; 1 Timothy 1: 15)

3). Salvation is OF …Not of works, not of merit, not of the law but rather all of grace alone. (2 Corinthians 8: 9; Acts 15: 11; 2 Timothy 1: 9)

4). Salvation is of THE Lord, there is just one way of salvation. Our Lord plainly said that He is The Way, The Truth, The Life, The Door, The Light, The Bread of life, The Good Shepherd, and The Resurrection. (John 14: 6; John 10: 9; John 8: 12; John 6: 35; John 11: 25)

5). Salvation is of the LORD; the Lord Jesus Christ. It is who He is that gives infinite power to what He accomplished for us upon the cross. (Acts 20: 28) Christ crucified is the only sacrifice for sin. (1 Corinthians 2: 2) The Lord did not die to make an effort to put away sin but rather to make complete atonement for sin of His people that God might be the just God and Saviour. (1 John 4: 10; John 19: 30)

Born Again

“Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” | John 3: 1-8

“Born Again” What does that mean?

These days almost everyone talks about being born again; but virtually no one knows what the Word of God teaches about the new birth.

Let me address the subject in simple, clear, unmistakable terms. I want you to understand what the new birth is and how it is accomplished.

More importantly, I want you to be born again.

May God be pleased to make it so for Christ’s sake. Look at those five words, and ask God to give you wisdom and grace to understand what they mean. — “Ye must be born again!”

Our Lord Came on Purpose

“Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” | Matthew 5: 11-12

Our Lord came on purpose, to save a particular people, and He accomplished what He came to do!

If you are one of those particular people, and if He accomplished salvation for you, then He will notify you of it through the preaching of His Word.

In His notification, He will convince you of the fact that you are a sinner; the worst sinner you’ve ever known!

That is the very reason why He had to die. It was to save you from your sins.

His death was God the Father’s free gift to you. And in His free gift, you are completely redeemed!

It was all appointed by the Father, and obtained by the Son.

To Him be glory forever!

TRUE OR COUNTERFEIT FAITH

“Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God” | Hebrews 3: 12)

Here, the Holy Spirit gives us the evidence of that God-given faith of God’s elect, and the evidence of counterfeit faith which the flesh produces.

True faith will take heed to the warnings of scripture, and search the heart for evidences of unbelief and cry out to God for aid. On the other hand, sham faith is full of presumption and looks to something other than Christ for assurance.

True faith will persevere to the end because it is fastened to a living person, Jesus Christ, (1 Peter 2: 4) while imitation faith will end in failure because it is resting on some false grounds of hope. (Isaiah 28: 17)

True faith in time of trial will bring the believer closer to His Lord, knowing the trial is from His hand and for our good. (Romans 8: 28) On the other hand bogus faith in time of trouble will result in the person departing from the gospel and from those who believe. An evil heart of unbelief is always manifested by departing from the living God. John said, “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for had they been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us, but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.” (John 2: 19)

Let us not be afraid to examine ourselves to see whether we be in the faith. (2 Corinthians 13: 5)

True faith is willing to submit to the word of God because it is the foundation of faith. (John 6: 66-69)

Swift To Hear, Slow To Speak, Slow to Wrath

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” | James 1: 19

Throughout scripture, particularly Proverbs, the Lord tells us to be more ready to hear than speak. He tells us that a fool is known by his constant talk, while a wise man listens well, heeds counsel and rebuke, and ‘studieth to answer. Fact is, we have a lot to learn and don’t know much; and if any man thinketh he knoweth anything ( has all the answers) he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. So we need to do a lot less talking and a lot more listening.

Let every one of us be SWIFT TO HEAR. We don’t know everything and we won’t learn anything if we aren’t swift to hear. The ear and the mouth do not work together. When one is open the other is shut. The ear is best left open while the mouth is better left shut. If we are too busy talking we will miss something worth hearing. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Faith is not big talk, but good hearing. We have a lot to learn from God’s Word so we need to be swift to hear… ready and waiting, like a little child… eager to listen and learn. The longer we live the more we will realize that we haven’t learned much of anything worth learning. It is a crying shame that we know more about useless things than the one thing needful; that we can quote useless information but can’t quote very much of God’s Word.

The more a man grows in grace, the more he will listen and the less he will speak. Growth in grace is growth in meekness and humility. Humility makes a person dislike speaking of self and more ready to hear from others. Humility makes one listen with compassion and interest. True love is interested in the loved one, what they have to say; while self-love is more interested in what self has to say. The more a man grows in grace the more he will hate himself, and deny self. A big part of denying self is being tired of hearing your own voice. We deny self by denying that we have any self importance, knowledge, or wisdom that would make others want to hear from us. If we truly esteem other better than ourselves we would rather hear from them, than they hear from us, especially concerning our Lord’s Word. So, let every one of us be SWIFT TO HEAR.

Let every man be SLOW TO SPEAK. Scripture says: ‘A fool speaketh all his mind . . . A fool is readily known. He is quick to speak and his folly and ignorance is quickly known. But, even a fool is thought to be wise when he holds his peace. Someone once said, “It is better to keep our mouths shut and be thought a fool, than to open our mouths and remove all doubt.” How many times have we opened our big mouths too soon, spoken all our mind, let people have a piece of our mind, popped off, spoken off the top of our head, made a fool of ourselves by spouting off, and soon regretted it? How many times? Then later we curse ourselves for not keeping quiet. O’ how we should be slow to speak! Dear old brother Shanks once said, “Take every opportunity to SHUT UP!” Scripture says, “he that keepeth his mouth keepeth his soul from many troubles.” If we are slow to speak, not giving a reply or opinion too quickly, if we think about it a little bit, we may not say anything at all, or may have a change of mind. This is especially true when hearing God’s Word preached. I remember my pastor once say, ‘don’t judge something you’ve heard in five minutes that I spent five days studying.’

We may learn something from listening and be glad we didn’t speak and reveal our ignorance. The admonition of the Lord is, “God is in Heaven and thou upon earth, let thy words be few.” I remember once as a young boy, bragging and boasting of something to my friends (as young boys do, especially in a crowd); when I turned around and my dad was standing there listening. He knew me well and I wilted under his knowing look. The all-knowing Lord hears us spout off and He knows us! Best not to say much in His presence. Better to be swift to hear and slow to speak.

Let every man be SLOW TO WRATH. Sometimes we get mad or offended when someone disagrees or takes issue with us. The reason scripture tells us to admonish one another is because we need a great deal of straightening out. Quite often, after getting mad at someone for crossing us, we find out they were right and we were wrong. And if it was something helpful to us, something that might prevent us from making a mistake, we should be glad, not mad, that they crossed us. If we think too highly of ourselves we will think too highly of our opinions and get mad when someone disagree with us. Fact is, we are all sometimes foolish, and at all times sinners, so we should not be so easily offended by someone who disagrees with a foolish sinner. May the Lord make us swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to wrath. May He give us faith and wisdom by hearing, discretion in speaking, and meekness and humility to loathe ourselves and love others.

Imparted Righteousness

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.” | 1 Peter 2: 24-25

The children of God are righteous by the implantation in their bosom of a righteous nature, which, as being born of God, is as pure as God is pure and as holy as he is holy.

For this reason we are said to be “partakers of the divine nature,” (2 Peter 1: 4) and to “put on the new man which after God [that is, after the image of God] is created” – it being a divine and new creation, “in righteousness and true holiness.” (Ephesians 4: 24)

This pure and holy nature, John tells us, cannot sin, because it is born of God, (1 John 3: 9) and is “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus,” which makes the soul free from the law of sin and death, (Romans 8: 2) being that kingdom of God in the heart, which is “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.” (Romans 14: 17)

This is an imparted righteousness, and its very essence is that sweet spirituality of mind, which is life and peace, and that holiness without which no man shall see the Lord. (Romans 8: 6; Hebrews 12: 14)

Six Stubborn Statements

I realize, as much as any of you, that we are out of step with the great parade of religion today.

I realize we are putting a question mark on some very successful religious organizations, and in conflict with all the major denominations.

I realize that we are charging some popular, recognized, powerful, and hard-working preachers and religious leaders with failure to preach the true gospel of God’s glory and grace.

We are charging them with the crime of preaching “another gospel.” This is serious; for Paul said, “If any man preach any other gospel, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1: 8) I realize that we are a very small minority compared with the vast religious movement of this day. But, to me, the issues are as clear as the sun!

  1. God is infinitely sovereign in all things, including salvation; or he isn’t sovereign at all.
  2. Man, in the fall, was rendered spiritually dead, without hope, without God, without Christ, and is shut up to the power of God to give him life; or he is not dead at all.
  3. God either elected a people to eternal salvation according to the good pleasure of his sovereign will, or he did not choose anyone, and has left the success of his purpose to save totally in the hands of the creature.
  4. Christ either sufficiently, effectually, and eternally saved those for whom he died, by his obedience and death, or he actually saved no one! The ransom was no ransom at all, only an offer.
  5. The eternal Spirit of God either effectually and powerfully quickens, regenerates, and calls the elect to repentance toward God and to faith in Christ, or extends an offer to all sinners to regenerate themselves. We must go back to the question, “Is man dead?”
  6. All the elect of God will be preserved by his grace and will persevere in the faith of Christ; or none will. For, if left to ourselves, we shall eventually fall as all creatures have.

Faith, Hope And Love

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” | 1 Corinthians 13: 13

What great blessings the Lord has freely and eternally given unto His church. (Romans 8: 32)

Indeed, Christ has blessed us with all spiritual blessings. (Ephesians 1: 3) The apostle Paul makes mention of these three great and spiritual blessings that abide in every believer; faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Why would Paul say that? Because it is true!

Every believer lives by faith, (Romans 1: 17) walks by faith (2 Corinthians 5: 7) and will die in faith, (Hebrews 13: 5) always looking and trusting Christ. (Hebrews 12: 2) But one day faith will end in perfect and complete sight, when we behold the Lord Jesus Christ face to face. (1 John 3: 2)

Likewise, every believer lives with a fervent hope, a living hope and a blessed hope; (Titus 2: 13) because it is a good hope through grace. (2 Thessalonians 2: 16) Hope springs from faith in Christ, (Hebrews 11: 1) for He is our hope. (Colossians 1: 27; 1 Timothy 1: 1) But the good hope we have in Christ, that too will one day come to an end in the certain expectation of the reality of that hope being predestinated to be just like the Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:29-30)

But the greatest of these gifts is love; the love of God that is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5: 5) will never end. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. (Romans 8: 38) Our love for the Lord Jesus Christ had a beginning but it will never have an end. We only love Him because He first loved us. (1 John 4: 19) When did the Lord start loving His own? From eternity in the covenant of grace! (Jeremiah 31: 3) The Lord’s love for His church is a sacrificial love. (Ephesians 5: 25; 1 John 4: 10) He laid down His life for His church. (John 13: 1) Oh how precious is that love for us.

May God grant us to be always thankful for this gift of His love unto us and may He cause it to grow in such a way as to glorify Him now and forever. One day soon every believer will sing forever; “Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen! (Revelation 1: 5-6)

“I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

“And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.” | Job 1: 19

There are many ways in which my own experience of God’s grace and his good providence compel me to adopt the language used by Job’s messenger as my own.

Looking back to the day of my birth, had not the Lord God preserved me from my mother’s womb, I would have surely perished. Many did in those days. But he who formed me in the belly loved me. Before I came forth from my mother’s womb, he sanctified me and ordained me as his messenger to you. (Jeremiah 1: 5) — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

My childhood, like yours, was filled with perils and dangers, in which multitudes dropped all around me. Many with whom I attended school are in hell today, others are in prison; and I would certainly have been in one or the other, had it not been for the fact that God spared me. He preserved me by his boundless, free grace and distinguishing mercy. — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

When, as a youth I lived at the edge of hell, playing with death, with my fists clinched, shaking them in my ever-gracious God’s face, courting his wrath every day, flirting with hell every night, the only reason I did not perish in the way I chose is the fact that I was “preserved for Jesus Christ” from eternity. (Jude 1) Nothing else can satisfactorily explain why my actions did not result in my death. — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

Oh the wonders of God’s distinguishing love toward me as the highly favored object of his mercy, by which he hedged me about and kept me, (Hosea 1: 6) when I had no awareness of his love for me, when I was utterly unconscious of the fact that he was watching over me and performing all things for me, (Psalm 57: 2) preserving me unto the day that he would call me by his grace! Hawker asked with astonishment, “Who shall count the sum of distinguishing mercy, in preserving and upholding providences, during the whole of an unconverted state?”“And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

Then, after he called me by his grace, giving me life and faith, salvation and forgiveness in Christ, how magnificently he has continued to uphold and preserve me from all evil, sparing my life in the midst of one sickness and then another! Why has he spared me? Why do I still reside in this tabernacle? I am convinced that there is no other reason but this: — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

All around me I see multitudes dying and dead in trespasses and sins, unawakened, unconcerned, unregenerated. I understand, (O Spirit of God remind me constantly!) that I have been spared, that I live to “declare the works of the Lord.” (Psalm 118: 17) — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

God give me grace to proclaim with earnestness the glorious gospel of his dear Son. To tell all who can be reached by my voice, and pen, and influence of the wonders of redeeming love. — “Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.” (Psalms 66: 16) — “And I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”

Your Atonement Has Already Been Made

“For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord,” | Leviticus 16: 30

My dear friend, read this verse of scripture and humble yourself before the Lord and believe it.

Christ Jesus, the priest of God’s own choosing has already made atonement for you if you believe on him for it. Would you be clean from all your sins before God? (Oh! My soul, think of such a thing!)

Jesus has already made the atonement, believe Him, simply believe him.

Don’t move a muscle until you believe Jesus Christ.

He made atonement by pouring out his own blood.

Read this verse and re-read it until your spirit is illuminated with the light of it and you are made to know you live through this atonement.
