Unseen Things

”While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” | 2 Corinthians 4: 18

SALVATION IS CHRIST. The Lord Jesus Christ HIMSELF is the sum and substance of God’s glorious salvation. An old Israelite named Simeon looked into the face of the Lord Jesus Christ and said, “Mine eyes have seen thy salvation.” (Luke 2: 25-35) The beloved John said, “This is the record that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life” (John 5: 11, 12) The apostle Paul said, “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3: 4)

SALVATION COMES THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST. God’s salvation comes to lost sinners through simple, sincere, childlike faith and trust in Christ as He is revealed in the Scriptures. “To him give all the prophets witness, that through faith in his name, whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins” (Acts 10: 43) The Lord Jesus told the apostle Paul that “by faith that is in me” sinners receive the forgiveness of sins and that inheritance prepared for the saints of God. (Acts 26: 13-18)

The Scriptures teach throughout that sinners are “saved by grace through faith” (Ephesians 2: 8-10; Romans 3: 24-28; Romans 5: 1); that is, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as He is revealed therein. The Word of God says to all who will hear, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16: 31)

SALVATION IS A FREE GIFT OF GOD’S GRACE. The sovereign God of the Bible freely gave His only begotten Son to purchase and secure the salvation of His sinful people, which He accomplished to perfection. (Hebrews 9: 12; Hebrews 10: 9-14) That is what the gracious God of the Bible freely did FOR sinners. However, that is not all that must be done in saving sinners. There must be a divine work accomplished IN sinners. Sinners, being spiritually dead, must have life, a new life, a divine life, which produces repentance, faith, conversion, perseverance in faith, etc. (Philippians 1: 6) This also God freely and sovereignly does in the salvation of sinners. It is God who shows sinners their sinfulness, their guilt, and their desperate need of Christ and salvation. Likewise, it is the great and gracious God of the Bible who reveals Christ to their souls. “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4: 6; Matthew 16: 13-17; 1 John 5: 20), whereby they are said to be born again, “not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, BUT OF GOD.” (John 1: 13)

“SALVATION IS OF THE LORD!”

WONDERFUL! WONDERFUL!

“And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. | 2 Samuel 12: 1

Under a dark, ominous cloud of impending judgment, the prophet Isaiah sees the “Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings.”

And oh what a sight it was!

Says he, “Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given… and His name shall be called wonderful.” (Isaiah 9: 6) His name shall be called “Wonderful” because He IS “wonderful!” He is wonderful to the holy angels, and He is wonderful to the saints of God, those who know Him.

“Wonderful” is a powerful adjective.

A wonderful person is One who excites wonder; One who is extraordinary, One who is astonishing, One who is amazing, One who is separate and distinguished from others. “Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given” — the gloriously unique, incomparable God-man! He is indeed “wonderful!”

“Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” (1 Timothy 3: 16)

The saints of God stand in wonder, adoration, and awe before this One.

He is wonderful in all that He is, all that He says, all that He has done, and all that He is doing.

He is wonderful as the Representative, Substitute, and Surety of His people – a sovereign, sufficient, successful, satisfied Savior!

In all of His glorious work of saving His people, from the very beginning to the end – He is wonderful!

He came from the highest heaven to the lowest hell to bring those who deserved the lowest hell to the highest heaven – He is wonderful! “He shall not fail nor be discouraged” (Isaiah 42: 4; Isaiah 53: 11)

In His faithfulness to save, He is wonderful! “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou SHALT be saved” – He is wonderful!

The saints of God never cease to wonder at their Lord and Savior. They wonder at Him as they see Him in His Word, as they
see Him in His Providence, and as they see Him in their salvation, now and throughout eternity.

“His name shall be called WONDERFUL” – and it WAS, and IS!

WHEN YOU HEAR

“We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long. O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever? Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom. For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.” | Psalm 74: 9-12

When you hear contemporary preachers talking about what God is ‘trying to do,’ or what He ‘wants to do’ and ‘would do’ if people would but cooperate; often accompanied with a plea to men and women: ‘Won’t you let God’ do this or that, it is important that you understand that they are not talking about the God of the Bible, the true and living God.

They are talking about a different god, a god of their own imagination, a god of their own making.

They are idolators!

The God of the Bible is described and set forth as One who does what He pleases, only what He pleases, and always what He pleases. (Psalm 15: 2,3; Psalm 135: 5,6)

HE IS GOD!

“What His soul desireth, even that He doeth.” (Job 23: 13) From Genesis 1: 1 throughout the whole of the Inspired Volume, the Holy Bible, GOD is set forth as the only true and living God, the Almighty One, absolutely sovereign, independent and free.

“Working ALL THINGS after the counsel of His own will.” (Ephesians 1: 11) “For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.” (Romans 11: 36)

“Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth” (Revelation 19: 6)

UNLESS…

“UNLESS thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine afflictions” | Psalm 119: 92

The psalmist’s life, for the most part, was a life of trials and afflictions.

He knew the grief of being pursued by enemies, betrayed and forsaken by friends, and worst of all, he bore the grief of his own sins and sinfulness in his conscience before God. He knew what he was! And to some degree every believer can identify with the psalmist in his trials and afflictions.

It is very instructive to note how the psalmist persevered through his trials and afflictions. If I may paraphrase the verse above, the psalmist is simply saying, ‘I could not have made it without the Word of God!’

The promises of his faithful God were his “delight” amidst his afflictions and sorrows. When all other comforts failed, he had the spiritual comfort of the words of his great and gracious God.

When he may have otherwise despaired, he was reassured and strengthened by the promises of his God.

When the heart of a believer stands in need of enlivening and reviving, nothing but the Word of God can uplift him.

Not all the gold and silver in the world, not even his Christian friends, but the Word of God alone can cheer and gladden the afflicted and sorrowful soul. No wonder the psalmist said, “O how I love thy law.” And, “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth.” (Psalm 119: 97, 103)

How necessary, how precious, how essential is the Word of God to true believers. Those who can “make it” without the Word of God are still in the darkness of nature.

They can “make it” because they are not in the battle!

When, EXACTLY Did God Save Me?

“Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.” | 1 John 2: 7

WHEN did the Lord first begin to deal with my soul?

WHEN, exactly, did I first begin to believe?

WHEN did I actually become a Christian?

A child of God?

I gave up trying to answer those questions a long time ago, as being totally unimportant.

George Whitefield once said, “I have heard of a person who was in a company with fourteen ministers of the gospel, some of whom were very eminent servants of Christ, yet not one of them could tell the time when God first manifested himself to his soul.”

It is quite sufficient to me that, by the grace of God, I do believe in the Christ of Scripture. And as a believing sinner I continue to pray for grace to continue to believe in Christ. (Hebrews 10: 38,39)

I Shall Be Satisfied

“All the days wherein the plague shall be in him he shall be defiled; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his habitation be.” | Leviticus 13: 46

Those who have been saved are those who are “being saved.” (I Corinthians 1: 18; Philippians 2: 12, 13)

Those who have learned of Christ are those who “are learning” of Him. (John 6: 45; Matthew 11: 29)

Those who truly know the Lord are those who “desire to know Him.” (Philippians 3: 7-10)

Those who have seen the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ are those who continue to cry unto the Lord, “I beseech Thee, show me Thy glory.” (Exodus 33: 18)

These are the people who say, from the heart, “As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake with thy likeness” (Psalm 17: 15)

ALL OF GRACE

“But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” | Ephesians 2: 4-5

In heaven’s glory we shall forever adore and praise our great God for the wondrous mystery of his grace, by which we are saved.

Everything in the great work of salvation sets forth the splendor of the grace of the Most High God. What do we see in election, predestination, redemption, regeneration and preservation, but His grace?

The whole work of salvation displays God’s rich, free, almighty, irresistible, sovereign, saving grace in Christ.

In salvation, as well as in creation, all things are of God, all things are by God, and all things are for God. He works all our works in us, and in Him alone all praise must be forever!

I Shall Be Satisfied

“Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries. | Psalm 135: 6-7

Being Ensamples to the Flock

“Someone once said, “Pharisees and Publicans both pour out their heart before God; the one is bragging, the other is begging.” Lord, make us to be beggars.’ ~ Unknown Author

To those who truly believe, those who have this precious faith, “HE IS PRECIOUS” (1 Peter 2: 7) This is one way I know that God has given me this faith. The faith which I have will not permit me to look to, trust in, rest upon, live upon, or have any hope in anyone but Christ, and Christ alone! Unto me “HE IS PRECIOUS!”

Trust

“Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus”

TRUST is a wonderful thing, and SWEET is a good word to describe it.

Whether between husband and wife, parents and children, friends, or whomever…..trust is sweet!

The word implies faith, confidence, and reliance, but that is not all.

There is also a wonderful rest and repose in trust; a freedom from doubts, suspicions, anxieties, and fearful apprehensions.

Trust is calm, peaceful and assured. “Tis so sweet” when guilty sinners come to “trust in Jesus.”
