Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” | Revelation 21: 4

TRUST is a wonderful thing, and SWEET is a good word to describe it.

Whether between husband and wife, parents and children, friends, or whomever… trust is sweet!

The word implies faith, confidence, and reliance, but that is not all.

There is also a wonderful rest and repose in trust; a freedom from doubts, suspicions, anxieties, and fearful apprehensions.

Trust is calm, peaceful and assured.

“Tis so sweet” when guilty sinners come to “trust in Jesus”.

Set Us In The Way Of His Steps

“Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase. Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.” | Psalm 85: 11-13

Several hundred years before the Savior came into the world, God’s prophet Isaiah saw a grand and glorious vision and cried, “Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, traveling in the greatness of his strength?”

“Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.” (Isaiah 63: 1)

And the Saviour answered, “I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save”.

“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1: 21)

While the Savior was yet in His mother’s womb, God sent an angel to Joseph with these words, “She shall bring forth a son” (and she did), “and thou shalt call his name JESUS” (and he did), “for he shall save his people from their sins”. (He most certainly shall!)

“As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.” (John 17: 2)

The Savior said, “Thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him”; and again says the Savior, “This is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day”.

“And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.” (John 6: 39)

Most assuredly, the Lord Jesus “SHALL save his people from their sins.”

“He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.” (Isaiah 42: 4)

“He shall not fail nor be discouraged”; but rather, “He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied”.

“He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.” (Isaiah 53: 11)

In light of the above verses (which are supported by the whole of the Word of God) it should never enter the mind of anyone that the Savior — the Lord Jesus Christ – is TRYING to save sinners… HE IS NOT!

Those who say to sinners, “Jesus is trying to save you; won’t you let him save you?” are not ambassadors of Christ.

They represent another person, another spirit, another power – Satan!

The Lord Jesus, from His throne of universal dominion and almighty grace is seeking out His lost sheep, His people, snatching them out of the kingdom of darkness and planting their feet in the kingdom of heaven; and shall bring them safely into His eternal glory.

He is a conquering, victorious, successful, satisfied Savior!

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”” (Matthew 11: 28)

However, let it be just as clearly understood that the Lord Jesus Christ, the only Savior, from His throne of almighty grace, stands with open arms and a heart filled with love and grace, ready to receive sinners who come to Him. “Come unto me” says He, “all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”.

We Believe And Are Sure

”Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” | John 6: 68-69

From the standpoint of God’s eternal decree, it may be truly said that believing sinners will not turn away from Christ because they cannot.

But from the standpoint of the believer’s experience, it may just as truly be said that believers cannot turn away from Christ because they will not. And this is not presumption.

It is the simple, saving, childlike faith and trust of a believing sinner, a true believer.

”Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.” (Psalm 57: 1)

The desperate need of his soul can only be satisfied in Christ Jesus the Lord!

Behold Your God!

“O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!” | Isaiah 40: 9

The God of the Bible, that great God with whom we have to do, is a God of will, purpose and determination, and His will is never thwarted.

“He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?”

“And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?” (Daniel 4: 35)

“He is of one mind, and who can turn him? And what his soul desireth, even that he doeth”.

“But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.” (Job 23: 13)

He declares, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure”.

“Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” (Isaiah 46: 9-10)

“He worketh ALL THINGS after the counsel of his own will”.

“In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:” (Ephesians 1: 11)

“For of him, and through him, and to him, are ALL THINGS”.

“Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?” (Romans 11: 35)

Whatsoever comes to pass in the whole creation is under God’s rule and dominion.

Whether something comes to pass by Divine, efficient cause or by Divine permission, it is under God’s control and a part of His overall will and purpose; and, “Known unto God are all His works from the beginning of the world”.

“Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.” (Acts 15: 18)

God is so sovereign and wise in His rule over all things, in His mysterious providence, that His people bow down in awe, wonder and admiration.

“And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.” (Genesis 45: 4-8)

All of the “misfortunes” in the life of Joseph were under the rule of this great God, to fulfill His wise and loving purpose of covenant grace.

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.” (Genesis 50: 20)

All of the terrible “catastrophes” in the life of Job (1:20); and every hand that moved against the darling of His heart, His only begotten Son, were under His rule and control.

“Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.” (John 19: 11)

No wonder the apostle Paul could write, “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8: 28)

What safety and security, peace and rest it is to be in His loving, almighty hands.

“Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:” (Acts 2: 23)

And take it to heart, believers, those things which befall you in this life come not only from the almighty hand of God, but from the infinite heart of God, your infinitely wise and loving Father.

“And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.” (Acts 4: 23-28)

Now read Psalm 23 – The LORD is my shepherd – The LORD is MY shepherd – what peace these words should bring to our hearts.

The Epistle Of Paul To Titus

“Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;” | Titus 1: 1

Before we can worship in peace of conscience and liberty of heart, we must know, on the authority of God’s Word and by the power of God’s Spirit, the entire question of sin has been forever settled by the blood of the Divine Sin offering.

All of God’s claims and all our necessities as ruined guilty sinners have been forever answered.

This gives perfect peace; and in the enjoyment of this peace we worship God.

Because we have a perfect sacrifice, we have a perfect conscience.

Living Godly In Christ

”But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” | 2 Timothy 3: 10-12

You see, these gatherings here, wherein we worship Him in songs of praise and edify one another, precious though they are, are merely practice sessions for when we shall really “Sing His praises.”

”Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.” (Exodus 15: 1)

So, away with carelessness, indifference and the mere form.

”Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.” (1 Chronicles 16: 23)

Let us endeavor to “worship Him” in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

An Honest And Pure Heart

”Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned” | 1 Timothy 1: 5

Several times when I was growing up and had done something I was not supposed to have done or had failed to do something I was supposed to have done, and was trying to keep it hidden, my mom (whom I often thought was a mind reader!) would remind me of that old adage, “Honesty is always the best policy.”

And she was right.

In the kingdom of God, however, honesty is not merely the best policy, honesty is the only policy!

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36: 26)

There is no place in the kingdom of God for pretense, deceitfulness, or hypocrisy.

“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5: 8)

God gives those whom He saves a new heart, an honest heart. “But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.” (Luke 8: 15)

“And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” (1 John 5: 20)

Having been given a saving knowledge of God, the saints know this: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” (Hebrews 4: 12, 13)

“As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17: 2, 3)

They are conscious of the fact that their God knows their words before they speak them and their thoughts before they come to mind.

“O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.” (Psalm 139: 1-4)

Who would dare pretend or practice hypocrisy before such a God?

God’s people are honest before their God and with each other.

They are God-conscious people, and are not moved by the smiles or frowns of the world.

They are not trying to impress men, but seeking to please God. And “honesty is the only policy!”

A Good Example

”Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” | 1 Timothy 4: 12

God has revealed unto the true believer the true nature of sin and his wound grows deeper with the passing of time, as God gives him more light.

Consequently, his need, his hungering and thirsting for Christ also increases with time. The deeper his wound, the deeper his repentance, and the more he loves to hear of the all-sufficient Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Those who profess faith in Christ and do not, with the passing of time, have a deeper sense of their sinfulness, and thus live in a deeper state of repentance, have never likely experienced anything but a superficial religious scratch, not Holy Spirit conviction and repentance.

This condition is nearly always manifest in their lack of an increasing hunger and thirst for Christ, and the indifferent manner in which they hear that precious gospel of God’s glory and grace. They would just as soon, or would rather hear other things than the things of Christ.

”Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3: 13-14)

Contrariwise, the true believer can never hear too much of that glorious message of “Jesus Christ and him crucified.” The true believer is described in this Scripture. May we, you and I, be found in that blessed number.

Mr. Spurgeon once said, “After some years of experience, the Christian comes to know, better than he did at first, how much the gospel suits him. He finds that its simplicity suits his bewilderment; its grace suits his sinfulness; its power is suitable to his weakness; its comfort is suitable to his despondence; and the more he grows, the more he loves the gospel of the grace of God.”

Contemporary Religion

”Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.” | Song Of Solomon 1: 4

NEVER in the history of the world has there been so much religious activity.

Religious men and women, young and old, are actively involved in political, social, and moral issues in the name of God (and for the good they do, I am truly thankful).

In the matter of “soul-winning,” evangelists, missionaries, pastors and personal witnesses “compass sea and land” (Matthew 23: 15) in their efforts to “win” sinners to Jesus (and for the success they have, generally speaking, I am truly sorry!).

The true “soul-winners” are those evangelists, missionaries, pastors and witnesses whose chief endeavor is to set forth the Lord Jesus Christ and him crucified before sinners as He is revealed in the Word of God, leaving the results to God the Spirit.

”O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?” (Galatians 3: 1)

The Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of Glory, is not standing by someplace waiting for “soul-winners” to bring sinners to Himself.

”For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2: 2)

The Christ of God comes to the sinners He saves.

Where they are, as they are, through the preached Word, opening their hearts and taking up residence there by the Holy Spirit.

Sinners cannot come to the Lord Jesus, nor can they be “won” to the Lord Jesus by the wiles of some alleged “soul-winner.”

”Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.” (Psalm 110: 3)

The Lord Jesus Christ came into this world to SAVE sinners, and He is doing just that!

He pursues, subdues and renews whom He wills. ”For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.” (John 5: 21)

“Salvation is of the Lord.”

”No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.” (John 6: 44,45)

“Lord Jesus, come quickly.” Come to your saints here today. Come to lost sinners here today. “Draw us and we will run after Thee”

The Only Conclusion We Can Come To

”For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” | Ephesians 2: 8-10

When “the mystery of God is finished,” “time shall be no more,” and all of the redeemed of the Lord are gathered around their great Redeemer, perfected and glorified forever, the only visible evidence of the consequences of sin will be seen on the Redeemer Himself!

Every mark and trace of sin will have been removed from the saints of God.

The wounds inflicted upon Christ the Redeemer when He delivered Himself up to be crucified as the Substitute for sinners, “the just for the unjust,” that He might bring them to God, will be the only visible evidence of sin remaining.

What an eternal reminder that “by His stripes they are healed!”

They did all the sinning – He did all the suffering, dying, and saving.

What amazing love and grace!

What an amazing Redeemer-God!

“Praise the Saviour, ye who know Him! Who can tell how much we owe Him? Gladly let us render to Him, All we are and have.”
