What Do We Think of Christ?

”For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?” | 2 Corinthians 2: 15-16

Every time I am about to preach, I pray the Lord would give me the ability to speak to every soul there as if no one has ever heard of the Lord Jesus Christ – that every person is lost and must come to Christ for life!

”If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” (Colossians 3: 1)

AND I pray that He enables me to tell of our Great God’s faithfulness and promises to His people, with all comfort and assurance – as though every person there has come to Him and was surely His child!

”Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3: 2)

Then I ask – “Who is sufficient for these things?”

”For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3: 3-4)

If we preach only Christ and Him crucified, the Word of God, His person and His work – HE will accomplish both!

Not me.

Render What Is Due

”And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” | Matthew 1: 21

Recently, my son became a lifeguard at a local water park.

He went through his training for CPR, basic first aid, swim tests, and finally his lifeguard certification exam.

”And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.” (Mark 2: 1)

In “modern terms”, he is now equipped to save lives.

”And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.” (Mark 2: 2)

However, the company’s policy for assisting a person in danger is to ask them if they are willing to receive aid.

While they attempt to rescue themselves, they may refuse any help.

If the one needing support is a small child, the lifeguard must ask permission from the parents to intervene.

”And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.” (Mark 2: 3)

Some refuse this “help”!

If the lifeguard is allowed to help, the swimmer would be assisting in some way.

”And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.” (Mark 2: 4)

Both could be praised.

But, when someone is unresponsive; when someone (child or adult) appears dead; when they are lifeless; when they cannot even request help; when they have no ability to save themselves; when no one is around to accept assistance on their behalf; it is then lawful for the lifeguard to rescue, resuscitate the injured and “save” them.

”When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” (Mark 2: 5)

Only the lifeguard can be praised.

Spiritually, there is a vast difference between helping and saving someone!

It is eternal life and death!

The Lord Jesus Christ did not come to help His people, He came to save His people, while we were dead in trespasses and sins.

He will receive all the glory for it!

His Glory

”Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:” | Ephesians 1: 1-3

The Glory of the Triune God is paramount in all things.

”According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” (Ephesians 1: 4-6)

This Glory is magnified in the electing of a people by the Father in Christ.

”In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:” (Ephesians 1: 7-9)

It is magnified in the saving of that people through the blood of Christ.

”That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.” (Ephesians 1: 10-12)

And it is magnified in the revelation of our Savior, in our new hearts, through the Holy Spirit.

”In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1: 13-14)

When the child of God is finally brought home, we will forever sing praise to His Glory in perfection and for eternity.

Burning Hearts

“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” | Acts 2: 42

If we have true fellowship with one another, it is because we worship the true and living God together. “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” (1 John 1: 3)

If we truly break bread together, it is because we are made of the same bread and body. “For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.” (1 Corinthians 10: 17)

If we truly pray together, it is because Christ has made us of one accord. “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.” (Acts 1: 14)

It is a great privilege for brethren to worship together, talk to one another about our Master, observe the Lord’s Table together, eat together, and pray together.

May we always be reminded of the cause of all our “spiritual blessings in heavenly places, IN CHRIST.”

Enable Me to Pray

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” | Ephesians 2: 8-10

Lord, enable me to pray for communion with my great Physician – instead of physical health.

Enable me to pray for the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of my God – instead of the riches of this world.

Enable me to pray for peace and rest in my soul found in Christ my Sabbath – instead of peace and rest in this body of death.

Come To Christ

“[A Prayer of David.]] Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy. Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee. Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.” | Psalm 86: 1-5

Christ told us, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” (John 7: 37) And “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11: 28)

Isaiah prophesied “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”

ANY, ALL, and EVERY ONE; come thirsty, tired and burdened.

Come to Christ now, without any payment of your works, and enter into true rest!

Where is God? What is He Doing?

“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.” | Romans 10: 1

Believers pray for their sin to be forgiven. We pray for our loved ones to hear the Gospel of free grace in Christ and to be drawn to Him. We pray for our brethren in Christ to be comforted, and we pray for God to call out His elect in this generation. But do we pray for our enemies?

Paul was praying for the salvation of his earthly kinsmen in Romans 9: 3 and 10: 1. Those Jews viewed him as a traitor. One who changed sides during a holy war. They likely referred to him only as Saul, and with a sour tone in their voices mocking him. They would torture and kill him if they could. But Paul earnestly prayed for them to hear and to know Christ.

Our Master told us to do just that in Matthew 5: 44. He said to “pray for them that despitefully use you.” Christ not only told us to pray for OUR enemies, but on our behalf, He prayed for HIS enemies – “Father, forgive them; they know not what they do.” (Luke 23: 34) Also, He died for His sheep while we were ungodly enemies against Him. (Romans 5: 6-8)

May we be given the grace to pray for the ones that hate us, despise us and would kill us if possible. That they too may know their sin and know the One who was made sin for His people, The Lord Jesus Christ!
