The Eternal God Is Thy Refuge

”The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.” | Deuteronomy 33: 27

As I get older and look back over my life, the one thing that becomes so important to me is not that I have lived for Christ; but that Christ lived, died, rose again, and ascended on High for me.

What a great future I have ahead of me.

Sin, Righteousness, Judgment

“I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found.” | Psalm 32: 5-6

The Holy Spirit convicts every sinner, for whom Christ died for of these three things.

Sin: Sin is what I am, not just the things I do or don’t do.

Sin is my nature, “I was born in sin and shapen in iniquity”.

“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” (Psalm 51: 5)

He gives to those whom He saves a right understanding of sin.

“Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.” (Psalm 51: 4)

Righteousness: First. I don’t have righteousness.

Second. Jesus Christ is all my righteousness; “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.”

“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” (Romans 10: 4)

Christ’s obedience, even unto death is the righteousness of the saints.

“For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10: 12-13)

Judgment: I deserve the judgment of God’s wrath, that’s true.

The Holy Spirit takes every sinner whom He saves to the Cross and reveals to them God’s judgment on them in their Substitute, Jesus Christ and Him Crucified.

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8: 36)

My judgment passed on Him and I am free.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Romans 8: 1)

Therefore we conclude; “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

The Promise Christ Swore To

“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” | 1 Timothy 1: 15

When I look at the cross of Christ I think, how holy must God be and how evil must I be for such a person as God’s Son to have to die such a death in order to save me.

“I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Romans 7: 21-24)

An Inglorious Ruin

“Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; but to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.” |Psalm 16: 1-3

The human race does not realize nor recognize its ruin.

Unregenerate people naturally cannot see their lost condition for they are spiritually dead to God.

For the most part, people see themselves in a rather glorious light.

However, this is not how God sees the human race.

God sees the human race as it is, lost, dead in trespasses and sins and in constant rebellion, and the way God sees it is the way it is.

Take any man at his best state, when he is praying, giving, reading God’s word, it is altogether vanity apart from the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.” (Psalm 39: 5)

“Behold, Jesus Christ is my worth and my completeness before God. “And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:” (Colossians 2: 10)

Our Rock And Salvation

”He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.” | Psalm 62: 2

God is our rock and our salvation.

There are five things mentioned in this Psalm concerning God’s relationship to His people.

1). God only is my Salvation. This word “ONLY” is a very powerful word. It reveals if we understand the gospel or not. It reveals if we believe God or not. If we add any thing to this word, we pervert the only gospel that is of God.

2). God is our Rock. Christ, who is God Incarnate, is the Rock on which the church is built. He is the sure Foundation. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. ”He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.” (Psalm 62: 2)

”For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3: 11)

3). God is our Defence. He is a wall around us. God Himself is our protection. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. ”He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.” (Psalm 62: 6)

”The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.” (Psalm 121: 5)

4). God is our Refuge. He is our shelter in the time of storm. A shelter must be a safe place from all danger and truly the Godman, Christ Jesus is our hiding place. And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. ”In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.” (Psalm 62: 7)

”And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” (Isaiah 32: 2)

5). God is our Glory. The glory of every believer is Jesus Christ Himself. ”Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62: 8)

”Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3: 2)

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

”But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.” (Psalm 3: 3)

But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

A Worthless Piece Of Brass

”He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.” | 2 Kings 18: 5-6

Forgetting those things which are behind is difficult work.

It is like the runner who tries to shed every weight that does so easily beset him.

However, if God has forgotten our sins and will remember them no more, then we must let them go also.

We must not go back and try to repair our past; only Christ can make satisfaction for the sins of God’s elect: past, present, and future.

”Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3: 13-14)

Therefore, let us do this: “Reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Let us spend our time reaching forth, looking to Him, learning of Him.

Christ is the mark; He is the prize.

The high calling of God is to be made like His Son.

May God help us to quit looking back and just look to Him. (We have enough to mourn over in a day without looking back for something else.)

A Thankful Person

“Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.” | James 5: 7-8

A thankful person is truly a happy person.

It is not possible to be unhappy and thankful at the same time.

If a person is truly thankful to the Lord for saving their soul, that person is also truly happy.

New Mercies Every Morning

”This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” | Lamentations 3: 21-23

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

When I think of the Lord’s mercies and compassions being new every morning, I must confess that I leave none of them unused each day.

There is never a carryover of unused mercies and compassions.

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.”

The Gospel Rejected & Its Consequences

”If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.” | Psalm 130: 3-4

There is no greater news to a sinner saved by grace than to hear that there is forgiveness with the LORD.

What a sweet melody it is.

They Filled Jerusalem With Their Doctrine

”Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” | Acts 5: 28

The Apostles did not back down at the threats of the religious leaders of their day.

They preached Christ every time they were given an open door.

Any one who lived in Jerusalem could tell you who and what the Apostles preached.

They preached that Name that is above every name.

They preached Jesus Christ; the one whom they slew and hanged on a tree, that He is risen and exalted at God’s right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

They never failed to preach His Person, His Work and His Exaltation.

Christ Himself was always their message.

“The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.” (Acts 5: 30-32)

O that this charge would be leveled against us.

That we have filled Ashland and the Tri State area with our Doctrine; which is none other than the preaching of Christ Crucified.

Every one should know Who we believe, love and worship in this assembly.
