FRATERNITY OF BRETHREN

“But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” | John 16: 6-8

It was the grace of God which taught Saul of Tarsus how to say “brother.”

If the Lord had not brought this proud Pharisee down, his Jewish pride would never have condescended to call a Roman “brother.” But by the grace of God, there is in the heart of this “Hebrew of Hebrews” such love for all believers of every race and nation that he calls them all “my brethren.”

Someone said, “Grace joins believers in a common brotherhood and makes the prominent man embrace the poor and confess his love for them; grace weaves the threads of separate individualities and personalities into one undivided family!”

Let the gospel be learned in the heart and it will mark the end of selfishness, it will bring down the proud from their elevated positions, and it will lift the young, the weak, and the old to their common rights and position as sons of God also.

“Liberty, equality, and fraternity” may be heralded in the Bill of Rights; but only the gospel can make us truly free, make us all equal in the person of our Lord Jesus, and give us the fraternity of brethren in God’s family.

Live in an Attitude of Thanksgiving and Prayer

“Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!” | Psalm 71: 18-19

The Apostle Paul says, “Rejoice evermore, pray without ceasing and give thanks to God in all things” (1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18) This is the will of God; that we rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks. What we are, what we have, where we are, and all that happens in the life of a believer are all according to the will of God for us.

Let us rejoice in prosperity or adversity and live in an attitude of thanksgiving and prayer, even when we have no particular request. Very ungrateful is the man who does not set so high a value on the love of God, the righteousness of Christ, and the hope of eternal life that he allows anything in this life to overshadow that wonderful gift of grace.

How can I murmur and complain when I am a child of the King of kings?

Religious But Lost

“Whosoever believeth that JESUS IS THE CHRIST is born of God.” | >b>1 John 5: 1

All who are born of God believe that Jesus is the Christ.

The title THE CHRIST signifies anointed and includes all the offices of the Son of God. To believe Him to be THE CHRIST is to believe Him to be that Prophet which Moses said should come, who has declared the whole mind and will of the Father. It is to believe He is that Priest which should arise after the order of Melchizedek and make full atonement for sin and effectual intercession for transgressors. It is to believe He is King of kings and Lord of lords, whom God hath set over all things from all ages and for all time.

This faith in Christ is not a mere assent to the fact nor merely acknowledging it as the demons have done. (Luke 4: 41)

It is to believe with the heart. (Romans 10: 9-10)

It is to bow the knee in repentance and to look to Christ, trust in Him, receive Him as our righteousness, to rest in His blood for cleansing, and to lay hold of Him as our Savior, Redeemer, and Mediator. (1 Timothy 2: 5)

Such faith is far above and beyond the reach of the human mind.

It is the gift of God.

It is the result of regeneration and a new birth, for we must be drawn to Christ and taught of God. (John 6: 44-45)

Lord, What Will You Have Me To Do?

“Lord, what will you have me to do?” Acts 9: 6

This is Paul’s question on the road where he met the sovereign Christ.

It was not, ‘what do I think is best for me?’ Or ‘what will afford me the most pleasure and comfort?’ Or even ‘what do other people do?’ But “Lord, what will YOU have me to do?”

In every case enable me, by Thy grace, to do what is pleasing in Thy sight and that which will bring glory to Thy name.

Where we get in trouble is putting our wills and ways before His!

It is not I but Christ, His gospel, His church, His kingdom, His glory, which must be considered.

When this is settled “I” will fall in the right place and though the way may not be easy; in the end it will be pleasant.

“In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3: 6)

I TRUST HIM

“And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.” | Acts 17: 6-7

It is not my hold of Christ that saves, but His hold of me.

It is not my promise to Him which keeps me, but His promise to me.

It is not my works which make me righteous before God, but His perfect life and obedience.

My best is but filthy rags. I trust Him on the strength and authority of His Word.

He died for those who believe; Lord, I believe! He promised to save all who trust Him! He said, “All that my Father giveth me shall come to me and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” I came to Him, I am coming to Him, and by God’s grace, I shall continue to come.

True Faith

“And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.” | 2 Samuel 11: 26-27

True faith throbs in a man’s pulse, it looks out of his eyes, it lights up his countenance, it softens his touch, it mellows his voice, it bows his head, it bends his knee, it opens his hand, it soft-pedals his tongue, it breaks his heart, it orders his steps, and it gives him a hearing ear. He lives for Christ; and, if necessary, he would die for Him.

THE DAY OF SMALL THINGS

“For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” | Zechariah 4: 10

God delivered a nation from 400 years of bondage with a shepherd’s staff. He slew a giant and saved that nation with a sling and a stone. He turned the world upside down with eleven simple, plain men – and the illustrations that “Little is great when God is in it” are numberless, but we must not just apply this truth to the instrument God uses, but should apply it also to the task.

It is true that God uses humble men to perform great works for His glory – but God also uses His servants to teach the little children, to pastor the small assembly, to witness to one Ethiopian, to offer a prayer, to provide an unrecognized and often an unknown service! Most of us are willing to be “humble men” doing great works, but how many of us “great men” are willing to do humble work?

It is most doubtful that our Lord will trust us with any great responsibility until it has been proven that we are faithful in few things! It has been my understanding from the Scriptures that those whom God trusted with great responsibility were content with where they were and with what they were doing. Examples: Moses, David and Joseph.

It would be refreshing, instead of hearing what one used to do or what one plans to do and be, to see one dedicated to being what he is and doing with joy and zeal what is at hand!

Christ may come today and I could die today, but I’m not sure that He would accept my explanation that I was preparing myself for great things and would have been a teacher if there had been an opening, or a pastor if there had been a church available, or a martyr if men had still been dying, a deacon, an elder, or a church leader after I had aged a bit. Would He? Or would He ask, “What servant chooses his own task? His own place of labor? His own time of service?” Does not the faithful servant ask, “Lord, what would you have me to do?”

Everybody wants to take the floor, few care to sweep it.

The returning prodigal did not labor as a hired servant, but he was willing.

True Profession

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth.” | 1 John 3: 18

The thing that troubles me most about the validity of our profession of Christ is that we talk, preach, and sing of love, mercy, and forgiveness. But then, when the opportunity comes for us to love the unlovely, forgive the offender, and bind up the wounded heart, we join the circle of Pharisees, clutching our stones, ready to wound and maim. A profession that does not produce is a false profession. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5: 22-23)

Six Things Believers Will Do

“O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name’s sake.” | Psalm 79: 8-9

1). Believers so trust Christ as to renounce every other ground of confidence. (Philippians 3: 7-9)

2). Believers glory only in the righteousness of Christ and count their own to be filthy rags. (Isaiah 64: 6)

3). Believers rejoice in the cross of substitution, glorying in nothing else. (Galatians 6: 14)

4).Believers love the Lord Jesus supremely and will so order their lives as to avoid commitments and associations which hinder fellowship with Him. (Luke 14: 26-27)

5). Believers will continue in the faith, for true believers never quit. (1 John 2:19)

6). Believers obey the Lord’s commandments, not in order to gain His favor but because they love Him and dwell in His favor. (2 Corinthians 5: 14-15)

And The Word Was Made Flesh

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” | John 1: 14

My friends, if you will carefully consider it, this is the most extraordinary fact ever declared in human language.

God became a man and “took upon him the likeness of sinful flesh.”

The Ancient of Days became an infant of days.

The Son of the Most-High God became a man of sorrows.

He made the world; but as a man, “he had no place to lay his head.”

He who made the rivers asked a woman to give him a drink of water.

He who cast out devils was tempted of the devil, and the author of life died and lay in a tomb.

“The sun that hid from Him its face by His own hand was hung in space;
The sky which darkened o’er His head by Him above the world was spread;
The spear that shed His precious blood was tempered in the fires of God;
The grave in which His form was laid was hewn in rocks His hand had made.”
