Things Above

”Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” | Colossians 3: 2

One of the old writers once said: “Do not look for that in the law which can only be found in the gospel; do not look for that in ourselves which is only to be found in Christ; do not look for that in the creature (world) which can only be found in the Creator; and do not look for that on earth which can only be found in Heaven.”

Let Us Come Boldly

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!” | Isaiah 52: 7

Oh, how God’s people rest in His absolute sovereignty over all things concerning them.

That is their good news.

That is their peace.

That is their hope of salvation.

No matter how much their sin has abounded, it will never be able to reign over His mercy and grace that He has mightily supplied in the death of His Son!

Every soul that the Father sovereignly chose, the Son sovereignly redeemed, and the Spirit has sovereignly called will through the ages of eternity cry, “Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth!”

Praise With My Whole Heart

”It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High:” | Psalm 92: 1

We have so much to be thankful for.

It is a good thing to (as often as we can) just stop and remind ourselves of how many wonderful things our gracious God has given us to be thankful for.

How could we ever say thank you enough for the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ that He abundantly shed on us to put away all of our sin?

How could we ever say thank you enough for the mercy that begins brand new every morning?

Every plate of food that we eat, every drop of water that we drink, every breath of air that we breathe, all of it has been generously given to us by the Lord our God. He protects us, He cares for us, He leads us and guides us only in His good and right way. He will keep us until our journey through this life ends, and then He will bring us home to an eternal inheritance in glory where we will forever be with Him!

Every time a chosen child of God is reminded of the abundance of mercy and grace that has been shown to him (in that moment of remembrance) all of the murmuring and complaining goes away. All of the fear and doubt goes away. All of the self-pity and wallowing in misery goes away.

Yes, “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord”!

The Difference In: No Faith; Weak Faith; And Strong Faith.

“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.” | Luke 17: 5

When a person has no faith at all, he looks to his own flesh for all of his confidence before God.

He believes that God will be satisfied with him by what he sees in himself – his actions, his words, and his thoughts.

When a person has weak faith, he looks to himself for a little bit of confidence before God.

He knows that he will never be able to satisfy God outside of the blood of Christ, but something in him still thinks that he must produce good actions, good words, and good thoughts along with Christ’s blood before God will accept him.

When a person is strong in faith, he does not look to himself at all.

He knows that he can have absolutely no confidence in his flesh. When it comes to God accepting him, all of his hope is in Christ’s actions, Christ’s words, and Christ’s thoughts.

He firmly believes that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief!” And “He is made unto (me) wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.”

Christ is all I need!

In summary…

No faith – has all confidence in the flesh.

Weak faith – has a little confidence in the flesh.

Strong faith – has NO confidence in the flesh at all!

I Am Persuaded

”For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” | Romans 10: 13

The apostle Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 1: 12, “I know WHOM I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.”

That is all that a believer needs to know.

To know Christ, and to know that He has secured everything that needs to be secured concerning eternal salvation for His people, will bring absolute rest to his soul.

A True Gift Is Freely Given

”Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift.” | 2 Corinthians 9: 15

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” If a person has been truly given a gift, then that person does not owe anything for receiving the gift.

A gift is not bought, a gift is not earned – a true gift is freely given.

Thank God, when He gave the precious gift of His Son to be the Redeemer of life for His sinful people, He did not give that glorious gift only to sinners from the nation of Israel, He gave that wonderful gift to sinners all over this world! Not every sinner in the world, but sinners that He chose in Christ out of the world. And with the gift of Him comes every spiritual blessing that heaven has to offer in Him – life, forgiveness, perfection, holiness, love, peace… and that list could go on forever.

In the gift of Christ, the child receives a Father, the bride receives a Husband, the lonely receives a Friend, the outcast receives a welcome acceptance, the poor receive an inheritance, the guilty receive a spotless record of innocence… and THAT list could go on forever.

Have you and I received the gift of Christ? If so, it will be evidenced in this way: we will totally believe in and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. We will cast our all on Him. He will be ALL of our hope before God. His righteousness will be ALL of our worth, and His blood will be ALL of our redemption and forgiveness for our sin. We will see His work for salvation to be ALL, and our work for salvation to be NOTHING before God!

If God has revealed that truth to us and in us, if God has revealed Christ as being ALL to us, then we have received His unspeakable gift, and we can give thanks to Him forever! Because in Christ, we will not perish.

In the gift of Him, we have eternal life!

O how thankful that makes us want to be!

Getting What I Deserve

”And he (Moses) said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. And he (The Lord) said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.” | Exodus 33: 18,19

Mercy is, “not getting what we truly do deserve”.

Grace is, “getting what we truly don’t deserve”.

God showed mercy to us when He gave Christ what we deserved.

And God showed grace to us when He gave us what Christ deserved.

Christ received our sin, and we received His reward.

Christ received our rejection, and we received His acceptance.

Christ received our death, and we received His life.

If God ever gives us the eyes of faith to see that, He will have shown us His glory!

An Election Of Grace

”Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” | Romans 9: 6-13

To me the end of all controversy is “Thus saith the Lord.”

Only let me know that the Lord hath said this or that, and though the revelation should seem impossible to believe, and though it should come into conflict with all my previous notions, I will bow before it without a question.

“The Lord hath said it,” stands to us instead of all reason, and argument, and evidence; yea, we believe God in the teeth of supposed evidence and reason, saying, “Let God be true, but every man a liar.”

Happy & Content In Christ

”God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged” | Romans 3: 4

Are there any evidences that a person can have of being physically alive?

Yes there are… Breathing lungs, a beating heart, and a thinking mind will all be present and active.

If any of those three are absent; if the lungs no longer breathe, the heart no longer beats, or the mind no longer thinks, then it cannot be said that the person shows the evidence of life.

The same can be said concerning Spiritual life.

When Spiritual life is present, The quickening breath of God’s Holy Ghost will be in the soul; faith IN and ON Christ will be in the heart; and a right view of God, man, and salvation will be in the mind.

When a continual, fervent, immediate need for Christ is within a person – the breath of God’s Spirit is in the soul.

When Christ becomes a sinner’s only hope, and only desire; when a sinner stops looking to his own works for salvation, and starts looking to Christ’s work on the cross alone – true, saving faith is in the heart. And when a sinner throws out every word but God’s word, and says: “let God be true, and every man a liar” – repentance has come to the mind.

When these things are present, God given life has come!

Grow In Grace

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” | 2 Peter 3: 18

The apostle’s exhortation to us as God’s people who have been called by faith to believe on Christ is, “grow in grace.”

When God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the doctrine of grace. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2: 8-9)

They grow in the object of grace – which is Christ Himself! “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” (2 Timothy 1: 9) “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2: 1)

And when God‘s people “grow in grace,” they grow in the practice of grace.

Psalm 111: 4 says, “…the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.” And all who “grow in grace” say, “As He is, I desire to be.” True growth in grace says with David, “I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with THY likeness.” (Psalm 17:15)

The doctrine! The object! The practice!

“Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To HIM be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (2 Peter 3: 17,18)
