THE UNSPEAKABLE GIFT

“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” | 2 Corinthians 9: 15

Paul wrote, “Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift.” God’s gift is unspeakable because the mere words of man can’t explain or adequately describe the gift He gives.

The lesson from this verse is simple.

If you possess this “unspeakable gift,” which is Christ Jesus, simply thank God for it.

Esau Have I Hated

“As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” | Romans 9: 13

When I was first exposed to the doctrines of grace and the sovereignty of God, the above verse became the sledge-hammer that I used to pulverize the erroneous doctrines of “Universal Redemption,” “God loving everybody” and “Christ dying for everyone.”

It was almost as though I rejoiced in the fact that “God hated Esau.”

I don’t feel or think that way any longer.

The more God shows me how much l am like Jacob, the wretched deceiver that he was, the more my heart is astonished that God could love Jacob or me. I understand how He could hate me, but how He could love me is beyond my understanding.

Clinging To Christ

Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die.

Being a depraved sinner, what can I do to impress God? What can I offer or bring to the Sovereign that would cause Him to be mindful of me?

Can I do a work of righteousness that would grip His attention? No, I am dead in trespasses and sin and I can do nothing!

Am I to offer Him my heart? No, my heart is “deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.” (Jeremiah 17: 9)

If He would desire to look into the deep recesses of my mind would He find anything worthy of His mercy? No, nothing is there but carnality and enmity.

The Old hymn writer, Augustus Toplady concerning chosen and saved sinners rightfully penned, “In my hand no price I bring.” Why? Because we are nothing, we have nothing, and we can do nothing that would cause God to be merciful to us.

So what is a sinner to do?

SIMPLY CLING to the Christ of the cross.

Everything God required of His people Christ provided for them.

Truly He is the Rock of Ages.

WHEN I CONSIDER

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” | Psalms 8: 3-4

It is said that if our universe was a beach, earth would be nothing more than a grain of sand.

Astronomers tell us that there are over a hundred billion stars. Our sun (which is a star) is only a tiny dot among several hundred billion others forming our galaxy. Traveling at the speed of light, which is 186,282 miles per second, it would take approximately one hundred thousand (100,000) years to reach the Milky Way which is far closer to us than many other galaxies that can be seen with powerful telescopes.

We cannot perceive the infinite depth and vastness of God’s universe and yet David says that it is but the work of God’s fingers.

The next time you gaze into the sky on a clear night, I hope you will think about the vastness, the boundless and the limitless power of God, then ask yourself the question that David asked.

“What am I, that God would be mindful of me?”

“Who am I, that God would visit me in love, mercy and grace to save me?”

The answer is a simple yet amazing one.

I am a child of God!

He That Glorieth, Let Him Glory in the Lord

“Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory, for Thy mercy, and for Thy Truth’s sake.” | Psalm 115: 1

The true test of whether the Gospel you trust in is THE GOSPEL can be answered by one simple question:

Does God get all the glory or does man?

The true Gospel ALWAYS glorifies God in the person and work of His Son! God’s Gospel gives glory to His wisdom, His power, His mercy, His grace, His love and most importantly HIS SON!

A false gospel will always in some way credit something to man. But the Word of God is clear that “No flesh should glory in His presence.” (I Corinthians 1: 29)

“That according as it is written, he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” (I Corinthians 1: 31)

KNOWING YOUR ELECTION OF GOD

“Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.” | 1 Thessalonians 1: 4

It seems that there are an increasing number of people who hear the doctrine of election and become deeply concerned with whether or not they are one of God’s elect.

That is not the issue.

The issue is, are you trusting in Christ alone for the forgiveness of sin and the imputation of perfect righteousness?

Do you think that the woman with the issue of blood who crawled to the Lord Jesus, hoping to touch but the hem of His garment, was wondering whether or not she was one of God’s elect? No! She touched Christ and was made whole. That proved that she was chosen of God before the foundation of the world.

Do you think that the dying thief on Calvary’s cross was concerned with whether or not he was chosen and elected of God before time ever was? No! He simply said, “Lord remember me when you come into your kingdom,” and that was the result of his election.

What hungry man would hesitate and say, “I wonder if it is the will and purpose of God that I should eat?” If he is hungry, he will eat.

What weary man would say, “I wonder if it is the predestinated purpose of God for me to sleep?” There are none that I know of, for a man that is tired and weary will simply fall to sleep. Sleeping and eating come as natural to us as believing God ought to.

Yet, being spiritually dead, we must first be given life in order to partake of the Bread of Life and the Water of Life, which is Jesus Christ. It is then that the sinner realizes that God chose them unto salvation before the world was ever made!

Will folks ever learn that election shuts no one out of heaven’s glory?

Actually, it is what shuts them in!

Who And What We Preach

Two of my all-time favorite hymns are “Rock Of Ages,” and “Amazing Grace.”

Modern-day religion has taken the “Rock” out of their preaching, which has removed the “Amazing” from their grace.

Access to God With Confidence

‘In whom, (in Christ) we have boldness and access with confidence, by the faith of him.’ ~ Ephesians 3: 12

Do you see anything in the above short verse that claims that we do anything to make ourselves holy? It is in Christ that the believer has boldness to come to God for mercy, grace and help. (Hebrews 4: 16)

It is only in the Lord Jesus that we have access.

I was never required to call ahead for permission when I went to visit my parents. Why? I was their son. I never had to knock on their door to gain entry. I had a key! I had access. I had boldness and confidence that the key would open the door and that I was always welcome.

In Christ we have boldness and access with confidence, and do you see the cause of it? It is all by the faith of Him, the Lord Jesus Christ.

No, not faith in Him, but faith in what Christ my Lord, by His faithfulness to God, did for His elect in Him and for Him.

This is why we preach that salvation is in a Person, it is in Christ, in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. (Ephesians 1:7)

I Will Love Them Freely

“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.” | Hosea 14: 4

We ARE nothing, we HAVE nothing, and we can DO nothing that would cause God to love us. If God loves me, it will have to be FREELY.

One might ask,
“You love Jesus don’t you?”
“Your love for God counts for something doesn’t it?”
“Your love for Christ must prove something?”

Yes it does!

It proves that,
“He first loved me.”
“I love Him because He first loved me.” (1 John 4: 19)
“If God ever loved me, he loved me FREELY.”

If He ever loved me FREELY, He still loves me FREELY for His free love is eternal, without beginning and without end.

What comfort that is to this sinner who still is nothing, still has nothing, and still can do nothing that would enable me to barter and bargain with God.

Truly, if God would ever love us, it would have to be freely.

Who Are These That Have Great Need?

They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. | Matthew 9: 12

Who are these that have no need? They are those who are said to be whole. Many times in the scriptures the word “whole” is used to show the believer’s completeness and perfect soundness in the Lord Jesus Christ. But here in Matthew chapter 9, verse 12, the word “whole” means, “to be able, or one who can do.”

Who are they that have “no need?”

Who are these that are said to be whole?

They are those that “are able” and “can do” something for themselves.

Those that be whole (or think themselves to be) need not a physician.

Who are these that have great need? They are those that are sick.

Like the man at the pool of Bethesda, we are lame and cannot walk. Like the poor woman who was bowed over, we can in no wise lift ourselves up. Like the unclean leper, sin is eating us away. Like the man with the withered hand, we cannot pick ourselves up by the bootstraps. Like the demoniac, we lived among the tombs of the dead. Like Lazarus, we were dead. If I had a terminal disease that only one doctor had the cure for, I would give anything and everything to find and receive treatment from that specialist.

Dear reader, we have such a disease and it is called “sin.”

There is such a Great Physician and He found me.

His name is Jesus Christ and only He can save His people from their sin. (Matthew 1: 21)

When do we go to the doctor?

When we are sick.

May God be pleased to continue to show us our sickness and need of Christ, the Great Physician.
