Grace Given To Unworthy Sinners

“Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:” | Ephesians 3: 8-9

The first link between my soul and Christ is not my goodness, but my badness; not my merit, but my misery; not my standing, but my falling; not my riches, but my need.

He comes to visit His people, yet not to admire their beauties, but to remove their deformities; not to reward their virtues, but to forgive their sins.

Behold Your God!

”O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!” | Isaiah 40: 9

When we first believe in Christ we see but little of Him.

The higher we climb the more we discover of His beauties.

But who has ever gained the summit?

Who has known all the heights and depths of the love of Christ which passes knowledge?

Paul, when grown old, sitting grey-haired, shivering in a dungeon in Rome, could say with greater emphasis than we can, “I know whom I have believed,” for each experience had been like the climbing of a hill, each trial had been like ascending another summit, and his death seemed like gaining the top of the mountain, from which he could see the whole of the faithfulness and the love of Him to whom he had committed his soul.

Get thee up, dear friend, into the high mountain

The Plank Of Free Grace!

”But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.” | Acts 15: 11

A minister lay dying in Scotland.

A fellow-minister called to see him, and inquired, “Well, my brother, what are you doing?”

“Doing?” answered the dying servant of God.

“Doing? I will tell you: I am gathering together all my prayers and sermons, all my good deeds and bad deeds – and am going to throw them all overboard together, and swim to glory on the plank of free grace!”

”Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” (Ephesians 2: 5)

Salvation Is Of The Lord!

”But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” | Jonah 2: 9

He who gave Himself for us in the depths of woe and death, doth not withdraw the grant now that He is enthroned in the highest heavens.

Will God Save A True Sinner?

”And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” | John 6: 40

Christ will never have finished his work upon believers till he has raised their bodies from the grave and glorified them like his own resurrected body.

He will never cease from the work which he has commenced on any one of his people till he has laid the top stone in the glorious perfections of heaven; and this truth is the joy of our hearts even now.

He Who Counts The Stars!

“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.” | Psalm 147: 3-5

He who counts the stars and calls them by their names, is in no danger of forgetting His own children!

He knows your case as thoroughly as if you were the only creature He ever made, or the only saint He ever loved!

It is most important for us to learn, that the smallest trifles are as much arranged by the God of Providence, as the most startling events.

He who counts the stars — has also numbered the hairs of our heads.

Our lives and deaths are predestined — but so, also, are our sitting down and our rising up!

“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” (Matthew 10: 29-30)

Words About Our Faith

“O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.” | Psalm 25: 20

Strange to say, the faith of Christians is a PERSON.

You may ask all other religions wherein their faith lieth, and they cannot answer on this wise.

Our faith is a PERSON; the gospel that we have to preach is a PERSON, and go wherever you may, we have something solid and tangible to preach.

If you had asked the twelve apostles, in their day, “What do you believe in?” They would not have needed to go round about with a long reply, but they would have pointed to their Master and they would have said, “We believe in HIM.”

“But what are your doctrines?”

“There they stand INCARNATE.”

“But what is your practice?”

“HE is our example.”

“What, then, do you believe?”

Hear ye the glorious answer of the apostle Paul, “We preach Christ crucified.”

Our creed, our body of divinity, our whole theology is summed up in the PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST.

The apostle preached doctrine, but the doctrine was Christ.

He preached practice but the practice was all in Christ.

There is no summary of the faith of a Christian that can compass all he believes, except that word – CHRIST; and that is the Alpha and Omega of our creed, that is the first and last rule of our practice – Christ, and Him crucified.

To spread the faith, then, is to spread the knowledge of Christ crucified; it is in fact, to bring men, through the agency of God’s Spirit, to feel their need of Christ, to seek Christ, to believe in Christ, to love Christ, and then to live for Christ.

Children Of Light Walking In A Dark World

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” | Ephesians 5: 15-17

There is hope for thee.

God has prepared a salvation for His elect, chosen by Him not because of any goodness in them, but because He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy, and will have compassion on whom He will have compassion.

Is this not a salvation that will suit thee, O poor sinner?

If God had chosen them out of any merit, or if that choice depended on anything which men did or could do, thou wert a damned soul, for thou hast no goodness, and thou canst do nothing.

If God’s election comes to those who are without merit, without hope, without strength, there is hope for thee

Why & What We Preach

”For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” | Ephesians 2: 8-9

What is faith?

It is made up of three things: knowledge; belief; and trust.

Knowledge comes first. “How shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard?” I need to be informed of a fact before I can possibly believe it.

The mind goes on to believe that these things are true. Then the heart believes that Jesus Christ is in truth our God and Saviour.

One more ingredient is needed: trust. Commit yourself to the merciful God; rest your hope on the gracious gospel; trust your soul to the living Redeemer!

What God’s People Glory In

”But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.” | Galatians 6: 14

I do not come into this pulpit hoping that perhaps somebody will of his own free will return to Christ.

My hope lies in another quarter.

I hope that my Master will lay hold of some of them, and say, “You are mine, and you shall be mine. I claim you for myself.”

My hope arises from the freeness of grace, and not from the freedom of the will.
